The program lent first-hand experience to people and places in the book series by Martin Walker about Bruno, Chief of Police (title of book #1) in St. Denis, a fictitious small town in the Dordogne. The program was superbly crafted to introduce the 10 participants, all guests at Les Cordeliers, to this beautiful and historic corner of France, with its renowned sites and unique culture. After the Bruno program, we continued at Les Cordeliers for another week with a rental car to further explore and enjoy the Perigord. To summarize: Sarlat is the perfect central point from which to discover the magical Perigord region of Dordogne. Les Cordeliers is the perfect small hotel experience in Sarlat. And Stephen and Susan are the perfect hosts. If you spend more than a night there, you will come away as friends.

We booked a 2-night stay, and when we arrived, the hosts were not there during their posted business hours. We called and they came about 10 minutes later as we waited outside, and they yelled at us incessantly as they approached. The yelling did not cease, and they continued to tell us they cancelled our reservation and were obstinate to any reason. I hoped to minimize emotional damage to my wife and child and told the hosts "Enough", if they wouldnt give us our room, we would find one somewhere else. Not worth the fight. I thought, later on, of course they will refund our money. They didn't. The entire experience tainted and ultimately spoiled our stay in Sarlat-la-Caneda. We had to spend extra time to find a hotel at the last minute, and the unprecedentedly rude treatment was quite jarring. These people are not professional in the least. Add to that how hard they were to reach afterwards when us and our booking agency tried to call them, they are only open a couple hours of the day and still then often aren't there during their posted business hours. It is a shame because we had such a wonderful trip throughout many other towns and accommodations across France. I recommend France, the Dordogne Valley, and even Sarlat - but steer clear of this bait and switch.

Our room, Degas, was perfect and ideal in every way. Clean (no dust), spacious, and charming. Nothing seemed outdated. We had research this and a couple of other nearby spots, but this seemed the best so we said yes. She asked if we wanted a second reservation for the next day and we waffled not wanting to commit but she said there is only one table left so I'll pencil you in and you can cancel if you don't want it. Our first night's dinner was so good that we immediately decided to return for a second night. For our first night I had the seasonal chef's recommendation which was a starter of shrimp in a tapioca soup (perfect large shrimp and a delicious broth), chicken stuffed with mushrooms and parsnips beneath the skin, and a cold strawberry custard dessert. It was all fabulous. My wife had one of the fois gras starters, roast lamb, and a delicious chocolate and crispy peanut dessert (which she particularly liked). A nice 1/2 bottle of local red wine, a delicious beet amuse bouche and and after dinner marshmellow (house made) and macaron final treat made for a memorable meal. Our second night we had to try all different things. My wife had the second fois gras starter which is fashioned in house and was spectacular. She had roast cod (perfectly flakes and coated with sesame seeds) accompanied by some exquisite cabbage (never thought I'd say that about cabbage). For dessert she had the rum baba with mango ice cream (drenched at the table with spiced and fruited rum). I had the poached oyster starter. The oyster were lightly cooked and served in the shells on a bed of leeks with a seafood emulsion. I followed this up with the sweetbreads which were something I'd always wanted to try. And finally the profiteroles (small pastry shells with coffee over cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. This time our waiter recommended a nice local white wine (from Chardonnay grapes) that was very nice. An amuse bouche of pumpkin soup and the after dinner treats perfected the meal. So, two nights, two home runs. Great meals at a fair price (about 100 euros for two each night). Reservations recommended, but once you have a reservation the table is yours for the night, they don't turn the table for someone else. Both nights the chef came out of the inaccurate kitchen as we were leaving to greet us and check on our experience.

It is considerably cheaper than the other hotels a few meters down the street. The hotel is a quaint little stone building just outside of the main street of Rocamadour. The stone outer structure of the building is amazing, and it's basically built into a cliff face. Plus, the location is great. You can just walk down the street to the main area of Rocamadour, where you can take the elevator up to the cathedral and then the chateau at the top. The rooms were small and what they had available was two twin beds, but it was more than acceptable. The bathroom was small but well equipped and it had superhot water in the shower, which was nice. They also had free parking, which was good. The best part of the stay was the amazing view from the window when we woke up in the morning. The sun was rising, the valley was filled with fog, and cool crisp air met you as you stuck your head out the window. If you want to go to Rocamadour and you want to save a few dollars over the more expensive hotels a few feet away, give this place a try.

Superb stay at the Moulin Rouge…read more We stayed 5 nights the last week of May. Highly recommended!!! The house - a beautiful 500 year old stone house, was in the owner's family for 200 years. Updated and very well kept. The ground - The minute you enter the place you feel like you had stepped into a magical place. The pictures don't capture well the beauty of the estate. It is truly incredible. The house sits on a beautiful 6 acre lot with gorgeous garden and a beautiful natural pool which is part of the Dordogne River. Across the pool there is a beautiful grassed slope with trees at the very top. Underground spring brings fresh water into the pool. The room - We stayed in the Rosalie room. Nicely decorated in a Country French fashion. On one side you have a Queen size bed and on the other a seating area with a sofa and a small table. There is an in-room white tiled bathroom with a shower. The room floor is also white tiles. All very clean and well kept. The owners - Rosette and Misha are the nicest hosts we have ever had! They are so welcoming, warm and friendly couple, a true pleasure to be their guests. I just can't say enough about how wonderful they are. They both are very happy to help out with trip suggestions and any help that you might need. Both speak French; Rosette also speaks English very well. The breakfast - Out of this world! Everything was fresh and delicious! Rosette is a great cook! We got a wonderful selection of breads, home made jams, home baked goods, eggs, cheese, fresh fruit, coffee. The price - We found it to be very fair. Very good value for the money. The nearby area - there is a bakery and a small market a few steps outside the BnB. There is a bigger supermarket 1-2 mins by car. The fresh local (traveling) market is held just across from the BnB every Tuesday. If you have not been to one yet - go. While at Cenec rent a Canoe, it is a great way to enjoy the area. If you want to take it easy, pick the route which goes with the stream.
