My stay at Palazzo Odoni was absolutely wonderful. We were greeted not only by Alessandro at the…read morefront desk but also by the hotel dog, Maffy! Everything about Palazzo Odoni deserves an A+. Palazzo Odoni Location: A+ What a great location in the lagoon. After arriving at Marco Polo Airport, my husband and I took the ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma. From Piazzale Roma, walking to Palazzo Odoni took less than five minutes. Similarly, when we checked out of Palazzo Odoni and walked to the train station, we also had a five-minute walk. I loved the courtyard entrance into Palazzo Odoni. When entering the courtyard before walking up the stairs, you would never know that you're in a city with hundreds of people outside. The courtyard was so quiet that I could have heard a pin drop. Palazzo Odoni Staff: A+ I emailed Palazzo Odoni about a week prior to my arrival in Venice to inquire about making reservations for lunch at Enoteca ai Artisti after I experienced problems contacting the restaurant via phone. Alberto at Palazzo Odoni was very kind to call the restaurant on my behalf and schedule a reservation for us. (By the way, that restaurant was incredible!) Alessandro was very helpful with giving us directions and advice on getting around the city. We arrived about 45 minutes before our room was ready, and he provided us coffee on the house during our wait. One more note about the staff: Palazzo Odoni also comes with a hotel dog. That's an A+ no matter what. Palazzo Odoni Rooms: A+ Our room was small and quaint but very clean and lovely. The view from the room and bathroom were wonderful! The Venetian-themed decor was pretty and very fitting for the whole building. Our room was quiet, and we slept very well. Palazzo Odoni Food: A+ The breakfast at Palazzo Odoni was incredible! The croissants and small pastries were fresh and delicious. Also available were meats, cheeses and fruits, which were also fantastic. Even the morning coffee was wonderful. Everything about Palazzo Odoni -- the convenient location, courteous staff, Maffy, the wonderful rooms and the great food -- made our stay in Venice absolutely perfect. If and when I return to Venice, Palazzo Odoni will be my one and only choice for a hotel. I absolutely recommend it.

Our party of 3 stayed in the Tiziano apartment. It is very spacious, has a nice small kitchen, great AC, and ample seating areas. The apartment's main sitting and dining area is decorated in a traditional palazzo style. The comfy bed and pull out sofa are deftly slip covered IKEA products. Access to this apartment requires many stair steps. Approx 30 steps to get to the lobby, and another 14 steps inside the apartment to get to the bathroom and bedroom. The lower floor of the apt has sleeping for 3, plus 2 more upstairs. There is plenty of hot water and a Jucuzzi tub. Sleeping was comfortable, heavy traditional drapes keep out the morning light. We used the #5 ACTV bus to get to and from the Marco Polo Airport. The Odoni is only a 10 min walk from Piazzale Roma bus and vaporetto stops. Near the Vaporetto stop is a bank (withdraw Euros from teller machining using Visa card, with PIN), also the COOP supermarket, where you can stock up on goodies for the fridge. There are many good restaurants and shops close by. I strongly recommend this place to families that can easily climb all those steps.

Naturally, the bunch I was with wanted pizza. Well... no thanks. I suggested we head over to Leon D'Oro because they had both pasta and pizza on the menu. As always, my dish ended up being the showstopper of the table. While everyone else ordered pizza, I went with the Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare. I've come a long way in two weeks and may have finally figured out this whole Italian ordering thing after all. When my plate hit the table, the waiter looked at me, smiled, shook my hand, and said, "You ordered the best dish here." At that moment, the pizza lovers around me instantly went into full-blown depression. The looks on their faces were priceless. They stared at my plate like seagulls eyeing their next victim in Saint Mark's Square. My seafood pasta arrived piping hot with steam rolling off it like fog on a cool Venice morning. The first bite sealed the deal -- absolutely fantastic. Fresh seafood, perfectly cooked pasta, and flavor in every bite. Meanwhile, the pizza heads kept munching on their dough while I sat there feeling like a king enjoying lunch in Venice. The food, the waiter, and the cool indoor dining area were exactly what we needed after walking all morning through the Venetian streets. To be fair, even the pizza looked good, so if that's your thing, come grab a slice. But don't leave without trying that seafood pasta. I've officially saved this spot, and if I ever make it back to Venice, Leon D'Oro will be one of my first stops on day one.

The food and drink came quickly. The oyster and caviar was so so. The cold cuts were wonderful. My sucking pig with sesame was pretty good. The spaghetti with meatballs and Alfredo was really good. Highly recommend the place but be prepared to pay for the location.

The price range also reflect the diversities of the hotels, ranging from under $100 to $1,000+ per night. Well, for our first stay, we chose the Bauer I'll Palazzo, based on location and our affordability. We wanted a luxury hotel, in the heart of things. And I mean literally right there! The hotel is on the Grand Canal. There's a gondola station right in front. The main shopping avenue is right in front with all the high end boutiques within a 5 minute walk. Then St. Mark's Square is also within a 5 minute walk. We stayed in a Deluxe room with partial canal view. The room was decorated in traditional Venetian style with antique furniture and marble bathroom. Luxurious, decadent, comfortable and functional. Our room also included breakfast buffet and tea time (on rooftop terrace). Breakfast on the patio on the Grand Canal is the best way to start any day, and the buffet is excellent. But sipping a cup of cappuccino, looking at the Grand Canal is a memory I will always treasure. Tea time on the roof terrace is so relaxing, I have dozed off a few times to the sounds of the city. They serve a selection of sliced meats, cheeses and fruits with teas, coffees or soft drinks. The Concierge service was outstanding! They helped us get around, find places to eat, arranged transportation and even arrange for a tour to Murano! Wonderful place to stay, so much so that we cancelled the other 5 star hotel we booked for the end of our cruise and returned here!

Basic no-nonsense hotel near St. Mark's Basilica…read more I have a few basic requirements for a hotel room in Venice: clean, comfortable, inexpensive and near St. Mark's Basilica. There is nothing like staying up late into the night listening to the dueling orchestra's in St. Mark's Square and then a 5 minute walk back to the hotel with a smile on your face. All of those requirements are met with Ca' del Dose. There are only 6 rooms in this tiny hotel and my party of 8 nearly rented out the entire place. You have to tell them when you're arriving at the hotel so they can meet you. After that you keep your keys and you can wander in and out of the hotel like it's your own private apartment. I love that feeling! Someone comes in some time during the day and cleans your room and refills the miniscule but surprisingly tasty breakfast. Someone is at the front desk during the morning and afternoon but other than that you have the tiny place to yourself. The rooms are all basic and some rooms even have a balcony. This is one of the easiest hotels to find in Venice. From St. Mark's Basilica walk towards the gondolas, turn left at the water, keep the water to your right, go over 4 bridges and then turn left at the next alley. The hotel is on your right. Ask if they give a discount for paying in cash.

As we were to learn later, the plazas in ancient Venice were the places where residents farmed and produced food for the inhabitants. And while food is no longer being produced, these places are the centers of sustenance for the many visitors arriving to the floating city. Albergo Antico Capon is located in one of the best of these Campos or plazas - the Campo Margarita. And Not only is the location a prime one, but so is the service and the food. Regarding the location, it is so centrally located that when we visited were entertained as we sat at the tables outside by the graduating classes of Doctors from the university. Their chants of "Doctore! Doctore!!" filled the air with such joy and enthusiasm that we couldn't help but welcome a couple of the students and their friends over to our table and invited them over for a couple of drinks! All in all, stop at Albergo Antico Capon if you're visiting Venice, and Campo Margarita. It's the perfect location to grab a bite, get a drink, and enjoy the magnificent view and life of the plaza!
