Stunning restaurant set in an old Paris train station. Food wise, the menu rotates regularly so don't look at other reviews and expect to get the exact same dishes unless you're going during the same week the review was written. I started with a a delicious foie gras terrine, served with apricot compote and tiny slices of bread. Delicious. Main course was an Iberico Pluma, which is a unique cut of of meat from an Iberico pig. Definitely the highlight since you can't get this cut of meat on the U.S. Service was attentive and pleasant. We stopped in for lunch without a reservation, about 2p. It was August and the place was mostly empty. We were invited to sit on the back porch upstairs which is lovely. The food was mostly good. My kids had Croque Monsieurs, my wife a Foie Gras de Canard, and I had a Salmon tartare. The waiter was insouciant, once asking me curtly, if I understood him, in French. What I discovered is that he was testing my smarts on whether, as an American tourist, he could take advantage of me. Upon completing our meal, and waiting about thirty additional minutes, the waiter told me that in order to pay my bill, I would need to go to the bar cash register. Mind you, still very few people in the restaurant. At the bar, I was not given an itemized bill (first time in six days, and ten meals, I was not given an itemized bill). Instead, I was told by his manager to simply pay $111 euros. I just happened to glance at the screen of the cash register, which was not facing me, and noticed the manager and the wait staff had placed not one, but two dishes of Salad with Chicken, which I did not order -- running up my actual bill by another $30 euros !!!! Its a shame that the waiter and the manager would both attempt this stunt. I would recommend that Americans, and other tourists, avoid this restaurant, as it seemed standard practice by their behavior. read more

Went here for a business lunch and got the "Traditional Menu" which was a unique, small salad, chicken with rice, and coffee. Plenty of bread to go around. The food was good, they have WIFI, the service was very friendly, and the space is really awesome. I was told it use to be a subway station. One does not realize it when they first walk through the doors upstairs, but as you descend it just opens up into a really nice, modern space. read more

Judging by the other reviews, if you want to come here for drinks, then you may have a lovely evening on the patio. However if you want to order food... We waited over 40 minutes for a very sub-par bland chicken club sandwich lacking in any originality, surrounded by frozen french fries. If it had just been the sandwich, then this would have ended as a one star review. Luckily for La Gare, it has style going for it. Trendy lounge music complements a dark, groovy interior design that really drew us in when we first arrived. Sadly it didn't make up for the total lack of attention we were given by the wait staff, and the aforementioned sandwich. Unless it's a lively after work cocktail hour, I don't think we'll be stopping at this gare again. read more

This is between a 2 star and a 3 star. 3 star if you come on a gorgeous day and sit out on the terrace. It's lovely. And you can lounge and people-watch. 2 star if you want a good meal. This is institutional food, the kind where you bring your aging grandmother who marvels at the fact that the salads all come out round and the steak sits solo on a plate. There was nothing wrong with the food, it was just uninspiring, the kind of thing you get when you eat at a hotel. One thing to note is that the restaurant is *huge*, enormous. It may not look like it but when the say La Gare, they really mean it's as big as a train station since it once was. read more

La Gare has the looks of an upscale restaurant but really lacks on anything else. Don't get me wrong, the food was OK (if portions were small), but for the price that we were paying, I wouldn't have expected anything less. They have a lunch menu which is more reasonably priced, but doesn't contain any exceptional dishes. Two reasons why I wouldn't recommend: 1. The price 2. Service and management It was a late lunch - maybe 2:00-2:30pm - and the service really degraded near the end of the meal. Waiters congregated near the kitchen exit talking and watching videos on their phones really casually and unprofessionally, and then one of them carried the trash/rubbish out in big black bin bags right through the tables of the restaurant, from the kitchen all the way to the garden area. Talk about a way to ruin the amazing decor. After ordering, the waiter returned to the table to inform us that they were out of the bottle of wine that we ordered. I had to choose a new bottle - OK these things happen, although it's harder to understand a stock malfunction with something like a bottle of wine (which keeps years) on a printed menu (printed, in ink, presumably for a while). In summary, it is an overpriced, below-average restaurant: It superficially resembles an elegant restaurant, AND charges for it, but when the customers thin out you start to realize that there is nothing elegant about it other than the decor. read more

My wife and I live in this neighborhood. We have had dinner at La Gare several times. Tonight (June 8, 2018) we went in to have a drink on the terrace. It took a half hour before anybody approached us for our order. And the drinks were the weakest we've had in Paris. We've been here a year and a half. The 2 African gentleman serving the outside area were both discourteous and inattentive. I walk my dog by here every day and the next time he shits in front of this place I will leave it there. Zero fucks given by the staff so c'est la vie. I wish I could write a review giving this shit hole ZERO stars. read more

This is an absolutely lovely Resturant. From what I understand it was a former train station. There's a small dining room upstairs as well as outdoor dining upstairs. But as you enter the restaurant if you walk to the left there is a massive staircase leading downstairs to a very large open dining area. I was very impressed particularly with the glass ceiling. And the food was excellent. The service wasn't that great but I think that's because the waiter was waiting on almost ten Tables by himself. But this is certainly a nice place to eat and some place that's romantic. I will repeat. read more

Wow, wow, wow! The perfect brunch. I have been there with friends and with my wife. Sober, hungover, hungry and not. One time I even arrived early and decided to wait outside in the rain for it to open. A great buffet, perfect for lazy Sundays. AVOID. Let me say that again - AVOID. The customer service was so bad, they were rude to us before we even sat down. That should have been a sign of what was to come. Out of the four meals we ordered, three were inedible. The steaks were like a rubber shoe sole. The waiter didn't know the difference between a butter knife and a fork. Even our glass was cracked. We basically walked out, and as one last insult, a waitress nearly started a fight with us while we were just trying to quickly pay our bill to avoid further awkwardness. This used to be one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants when we lived in Paris some time ago. We really enjoyed bringing visitors here because of the food and ambience. We came back last week for the first time in several years and were quite disappointed; we will probably never go there again. In the "old days" they had two outstanding specialties, their Bresse chicken and their mashed potatoes. The chicken was moist, tender and well-prepared. Their mashed potatoes were at least 50% butter and out of this world. This time, however, the chicken was so dry that it literally had to be sent back in favor of a completely different dish. The mashed potatoes were an afterthought, a mere shadow of their former glory. They used to have a pet chicken roaming the premises as a mascot. It's no longer there. I have been to La Gare about 6 times. I absolutely love this restaurant and it is more a local place than one tourists go to. Great atmosphere, great food, a tad pricey but not so bad for Paris restaurants. My favorite was the fig chutney foie gras! This restaurant has a great ambiance. it's cool that this restaurant used to be a train station, and you actually sit on the tracks (well, what used to be the tracks) while dining. the prix fixe here is cheap - 39 euros gets you app, entree and dessert. i had the salmon tartare to start, followed by dorade w/ veggies and a deconstructed lemon tart. everything was tasty, and the portions were just right. i actually think i would prefer being upstairs in the cafe, which has a lot more light, b/c the downstairs room was a bit dark. read more

Had an outstandingly mixed Americano cocktail (maybe the best one ever) here after a superb visit to the nearby Musée Marmottan Monet. After dark the mood in here changed drastically where violet lights illuminated the bar, loungy acid jazz calmed the nerves, and the dark hues of the interior invited you to stay longer. The service was friendly and mellow. I wish we had a bar like this in San Francisco, and if we did, I'd even pay the ridiculous Euro prices to chill here-- then again, for a bar this cool, this place was a significantly better value and experience than many digs in the 6th, 5th and 4th, and I'd say the quality is double. read more

I have been to this restaurant twice for lunch in the past week. This is very close to La Muette metro station. It is a great setting in a former station but the setting is really nice. Velvet chairs with white tablecloth and you can sit outside in the garden if the weather is nice. The fixed price menu is the best. For 28 euros, I had the asparagus soup and the cod. The cod (Cabillaud) is served with rice in a fragrant, coconut cream sauce. The chocolate dessert oozes with liquid dark chocolate in the center. The vanilla ice cream is a perfect complement to the chocolate. Neither are too sweet. All in all, a very delicious meal. Wine seems to be served by the glass or bottle. We did not notice a carafe option. We opted for the glass which is about 5-8 euros a glass. Highly recommend!! read more

In Paris, it isn't easy to find a restaurant where you feel comfortable bringing kids. la Gare, in the 16th, offers excellent food at reasonable prices with kind, unpretentious and American style service, large space, indoors and outdoors, gardens behind. With six adults and for Tweens, with wine for grownups, appetizer, main course and desserts, we had a bill for euros 350. Very reasonable. Fish was very fresh, exquisitely prepared, yet a nice kids menu. We were very pleased and recommend it. read more

Beautiful building with a very large dining-area. It is decorated in a cosy, classy way. Menu offers a lot of possibilities. Food was pretty good. Only downside is the waiting time. The problem is that there is none. We ordered and without exxageration, our food arrived in 5 minutes. We were a party of 10 and the restaurant was quite full. Because we wanted to take our time and have a nice evening out, we waited a long time before ordering dessert. This as well arrived within 5 minutes. The chocolate fondant was excellent ! Overall great experience but they need to work on their time management. TIP: take the metro back to Trocadero station (2 stops). Excellent view on the Eiffeltoren, expecially at night ! read more

After spending a wonderful morning at the Marmottan Monet Museum, we had a lovely, relaxed lunch here. I had a first course of a cold salad of dilled salmon, fresh greens, (and perfectly boiled) potatoes, with fresh goat cheese, all dressed with classic vinaigrette. As a main course I had stewed veal with vegetables (fresh green peas, pearl onions, and tomatoes) accompanied with mashed gold potatoes. Because my wife eats gluten free, the waiter assisted her with selections, after first conferring with the chef. She began with a salad with artichokes and followed it with perfectly sautéed fish fillet and a sautéed mixture of fresh peas, snap peas, broccoli, and asparagus. For dessert, I had the rich, creamy rice pudding. All were excellent examples of French cuisine: fresh ingredients that were expertly prepared. We completed our meal with cafe creme. The service was excellent: attentive but not intrusive. What an exceptional, leisurely lunch. read more

This is a big restaurant, which used to be an underground train station! The food is very good but it is a bit pricey. Given that the restaurant is located in a posh area, I would pay the price. We went there as part of a group of colleagues and all liked it. The ambience is great and the service is good too. This place is good for business lunch/dinner. We went around 7.30pm and the place was almost empty but by 8.30pm it was full! You definitely need a reservation to get in. read more

... And looking at other reviews, it is not a new issue. I am date-stamping this as I'm hoping the owner of the place read it and does something about the staff there. I am a French national and live in Paris. I came here with my British friend who was over for the week end. Since he was staying in the area, we decided to go to La Gare who we hadn't been for a long time, because it's a wonderful setting (and it still is). We went there on Saturday 15th of November at around 13:30 for lunch. And we will NEVER set a foot in this place again nor will any of our friends and family if we can help it. Here's what happened exactly, step by step: -My friend S and I entered the ¾ empty place. (you'll soon understand why) -No one greeted us for about 3 minutes. There was a barman who was busy wiping glasses looking at us and that's it. So we walked and entered this nice terrace they have right behind the entrance. -We decided we liked it very much and that should be great to have lunch here At this point, a dark haired maghreb-looking short waiter came to us and almost barked at us without even greeting us: "is this for the restaurant or for the bar?" -To which, as we saw people eating in this nice terrace, we answered: Restaurant (we wanted to eat like the people in the terrace) -To which he replied, abruptly and rudely, "well in this case this is not here, the restaurant is on the other side, follow me" -At this point we told him "no we 'd like to eat in the terrace, like these people, we like it here" -To which he answered 'this is not the Restaurant this is the Terrace" -Getting frustrated with his rude attitude we told him " we' dont really care what you call it, this is where we'd like to eat, is it possible?" - To which he replied: "how very charming, I'm sorry to say" At this point we could see nothing good coming out of this situation and just decided to leave. While he carried on barking at us. We went to the next brasserie in the corner, literally 1 minute away. It was absolutely packed, and we were received extremely pleasantly, and we could really understand why. I took the time to write this review because I hope that the owner of La Gare will see it and take action about the staff who are destroying his business. La Gare is a lovely setting / environment. But no paying customer will put up with this kind of attitude. I shiver at the idea that this place is close to the OECD headquarters and that the whole world might want to have a drink or lunch or dinner there. Projecting an Image about France's service which could damage the French Service reputation in the whole world for another generation, when it actually has made so much improvements over the last 2 decades. It is so bad i was tempted to write to le ministre des affaires etrangeres to ensure the French Staff from OECD does not direct its members there as it could damage France's service image yet again. I am 44 years old and a French Parisian, I have been to restaurants all over the world, expensive and affordable. I have NEVER seen anything like this in my entire life. I felt great shame in front of my British guest. Not even the Seinfeld's Soup Nazi treats you like this. Avoid this place like the plague. Honestly, there are so many wonderful places, and with now great service in Paris. Why put yourself though this?
