La Gruta is a restaurant located inside a cave. It's popular for its unique dining experience that is also close to the Teotihuacan pyramids. It's a popular spot to visit for lunch after seeing the pyramids; we came at 11am and beat the crowds. It's closest to parking lot 5 of the pyramids. The fried corn cakes ($231 MXN) were decent. The fire-grilled flank steak ($507) was good. The Mexican mortar "la gruta" ($329) was good with the huge chunks of chicharron. The barbacoa ($523) was very dry and not good at all. The Mexican platter ($557) was just okay except the steak which was decent. For drinks I ordered the grasshopper margarita which had ground grasshoppers and was okay but I wasn't the biggest fan. The ambiance was unique but the food was just not good. It is a huge space so it can fit large groups of people but it's still recommended to come earlier if possible. You definitely go for the experience more than the food but if you're in the area you might as well check it out. I just wouldn't have high expectations.

You are definitely paying for the atmosphere, not the food. If you come here expecting yummy food prepare to be disappointed. Three of us ordered something different and none of us liked what we got. It wasn't bad tasting but it had no flavor. I got the barbacoa (mutton) which appeared to be one of their prime entrees and I felt like I was just chewing meat for 20 minutes. Not much to it other than a side of cactus salad which was also not that great. (I didn't finish it.) The beers are $8. I don't know. I guess come for your Instagram photo but order something cheap.

La Gruta was such a cool dining experience! The wow factor here is definitely dining inside a cave but I was also surprised by how yummy the food was, especially the guac and chicharrones For a touristy place like this, I did not expect the food to be this good (not Michelin-star good, but better than average). Reservations recommended. We made a reservation for 11am on a Saturday but there were still plenty of tables available. If you come during peak lunch time though (12-2pm), you should expect a wait. La Gruta was an experience I would recommended if you are in the area. The entrance to this restaurant is conveniently located less than a block away from one of the exits from the archeological zone so we decided to walk over. (Fair warning you will feel out of place if you decide to do this, the entrance is car-centric) We went on a Wednesday afternoon no reservation and were seated immediately. The cave is gorgeous I can't lie. Our server was attentive and answered all of our questions, and gave us recommendations. We ordered a Quetzalcoatl salad as an appetizer (with cactus cheese tomatoes onion and tortilla chips with greens) which was mixed with delicious vinaigrette sauce. My partner got the la gruta classic mole with rice and beans and I got the mole with pancita and oh my gosh. I cannot begin to describe the explosion of flavors I had during this meal. My partners dish was alright, did not blow me away but it was a well executed dish nonetheless. I would love to go back and try their insect platter, although pricey it sounds amazing and if it's anything like the other food I ate I would 100% enjoy it. Over all my meal after tip was around 85$ for an agua fresca, mineral water 2 moles and a salad. Not too shabby!

This restaurant is extremely one of a kind a super unique in that it's inside a cave. It's absolutely stunning and beautiful as you walk down the stairs into the pit of the cave to eat. They were also able to accommodate a big group which was good. Although the ambiance and atmosphere were outstanding the food and service was lacking a bit. They staff was friendly and nice but they got 2 of our orders wrong and then when we told them the told us that we were incorrect like we didn't know what we ordered. Some of the food was good but other food came out cold.

I wish I had taken more pictures. Highly recommend this place. The place is amazing, wow! Plus when do you have the opportunity to enjoy food at a 100+ yrs old restaurant? The food is authentic and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff was friendly and welcoming. It's a must try spot!!

La Gruta is definitely one of those you come for the experience kind of places. Dining inside a cave right by Teotihuacan is incredibly unique, and the ambience is truly magical -- candlelit, cozy, and atmospheric. Honestly, the setting alone is worth seeing at least once. That said, while the vibe was amazing, the food and service were... good, but nothing to write home about, especially given how hyped this place is in prior reviews. Because it's La Gruta, we decided to try the Escamoles al Epazote (ant larvae sautéed with worm seed herb). It was definitely interesting and fun to say we tried it, but probably a one-and-done for us. Food highlights were mixed: * Kiddo#1 ordered the Christmas special meal, which included three small appetizers, pork belly as the main, and a Christmas cake with ice cream plus Christmas punch for dessert -- a nice, festive experience overall. * Kiddo#2 had the mutton consommé, which was very rich and flavorful -- one of the better dishes at the table. * Hubby tried the Mole La Gruta with chicken instead of turkey and really enjoyed it. He also loved his prickly pear mezcal . * I had the Mixiote Vegetarian, which looked beautiful and had a great mix of veggies, but unfortunately tasted pretty bland and "meh." One of the nicest touches was at the end of the meal -- guests are given candles "to retain positive energy" and place them in the corners of the cave, adding to the twinkling, almost magical feel of the space. A lovely way to end the experience. Overall, incredible ambience, memorable setting, and a fun cultural experience -- but given the cost of the meal, the food and service didn't quite live up to the hype. Maybe worth visiting once for the atmosphere, just keep expectations in check for the meal itself.

La Gruta, a restaurant inside a cave near Teotihuacan. The ambiance is great, where else do you get to eat inside of a cave? It's a whole vibe. Outside of that is where the good vibes end. We were served breakfast prior to our tour of Teotihuacan, and the breakfast was subpar at best. We were given a sweet bread to start, an entree of our choice, and a selection of drink between coffee and a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was sour and slimey, and about five hours later, vomiting and diarrhea took over. Just ruined the rest of the day. Ambiance and vibe gives it two stars, but the food and the subsequent food poisoning were not it.

This spot is more special than the reviews indicate, at least for history nerds like me. It either was/is or closely replicates a site sacred to the Teotihuacano civilization, a cavern of rebirth, the likes of which some archeologists believe is hidden in the bowels of the nearby Pyramid of the Sun itself. Dispensing with the hyperbolic waxing for a moment, La Gruta consists of a beautiful, large scale cavern dining experience that is well decorated and twinkles alluringly from every candlelit wall. Here you can find numerous prehispánic dishes, but I'm biased by my love for mole and found the version here to be very good. Their fresh off the griddle green sopes were unique and the best I've eaten. Overall, food and service are good not great but the unique location and historical ambiance make La Gruta a worthy stop on your next Teotihuacan trip.

This is a beautiful restaurant set inside a cave, rich with history. Unfortunately, the service and food did not meet expectations. I would recommend stopping by just for a drink and the molcajete (guacamole), and saving your money for a better culinary experience elsewhere. We ordered the molcajete (guacamole with pork rinds, that was decent) the mushroom soup (awful and they still charged us for it), tortilla soup (nothing special), salad ( I can make better ones).

My buddies and I visited Mexico City and took a tour to the pyramids. One of my friends saw this place on Instagram and really...REALLY wanted to try it, so we skipped the tour bus back to the city to stop by and eat here... We should've just stayed with the tour bus. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing, but that's really all it has going for it. The food is expensive and very underwhelming. I'm pretty sure I had the "Mexican Platter," which had a bit of everything, but nothing stood out. My friends weren't impressed with their food either. One ordered the barbacoa, which was probably the best thing we had--but still nothing to write home about. The place does have some decent drinks, but again, nothing amazing to make up for the detour. The prices for drinks were also pretty high--you'd get a better deal elsewhere. Service was just okay; not much to complain about, but it did take quite a while to get the check at the end. All in all, if you're in the area and not on a tour, maybe stop by just to check out the space or grab an appetizer and a drink. But save your appetite for better options. The traffic we endured getting back to our Airbnb just wasn't worth it.

I personally found my experience of dining at La Gruta to be wonderful! I admittedly felt some apprehension about going, as I've seen many reviews and heard word of mouth about it not being worth a visit...most of my group had already decided against going. I still wanted to experience La Gruta's unique dining location at least once however, so I convinced my partner to go with me. The atmosphere and vibes upon approaching were very impressive...I basically had a "wow!" type facial expression. You can see the dining space in the caves below as you walk up to the host stand...and I've just got to say - it is REALLY beautiful and cool to see! Another aspect of the atmosphere that impressed me was just how bright and airy it still was inside the restaurant space, since there's several openings to the surface. We were visiting Teotihuacan on a Monday, so even though we didn't have reservations, we got seated right away! I seriously enjoyed walking down the steps and descending into the large, spacious, cavernous area in which the tables are located. A true EXPERIENCE from beginning to end. I was also pleased to find that service here was attentive and courteous without being overly pushy. Now on to the food itself - I actually enjoyed most of what we ordered quite a bit more than I had anticipated. The portion sizes are very generous - even for the starters, and we ended up with more than we could finish on our own. So keep that in mind when ordering! Yes, they have very American prices (similarly priced to restaurants back home in LA), but you could probably just share a couple menu items with the whole table and be perfectly fine! I especially recommend ordering the "La Gruta" Mortar starter of guacamole, onions, and pork rinds. The guacamole was fresh and it was a HUGEEE size! I also wanted to try the Fried Grasshopper Corn Cakes...for the experience! It was beautifully presented (as beautifully as one can present a plate full of fried grasshoppers), and well-prepared, although definitely not something I could finish or would order again!! It was fun to try out one time, though! Lastly, we had the Trio of Quesadillas starter and also some Prickly Pear Margaritas. The margaritas were lovely, and the quesadillas came in a colorful trio of red, plain, and green (like the Mexican flag). Now, they were honestly a tad bit bland, although I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk that up to them being prepared in that authentic, pre-Columbian way. The tortillas themselves and ingredients inside were still very high quality! OH yeah, and at the end of the dining experience, they bring over a candle to your table for you to leave on the walls of the cave as part of a little ritual/tradition to leave from "la gruta" as a "re-born man or woman". It was a lovely little touch and one which we enjoyed doing! Overall, should you visit La Gruta? I personally say YES! As a traveling/vacation experience, I definitely feel it's worth doing at least ONCE. The atmosphere here is truly incredible, the service solid, and honestly a lot of the food is pretty decent as well. I ended up having a great time during my dining experience, and it has since become a memorable highlight from our Mexico City trip!

This place is a hidden gem--do not skip it…read more The restaurant itself is beautiful, with an amazing view, and from the moment we walked in, we felt completely at ease. Everything was spotless, welcoming, and thoughtfully done. It's owned and run by a local husband-and-wife team, and that personal care makes all the difference. We truly felt at home. Ernesto was incredible--knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely invested in making sure our entire family had a great experience. I speak Spanish, but he is also fluent in English, which made everything seamless. The food? Outstanding. My kids ordered the chicken tacos and finished every single bite. I had the tortilla soup, which was easily one of the best I've ever had--rich, comforting, and full of flavor. I also ordered a custom chicken breast stuffed with huitlacoche, and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. If you're looking for authentic food, excellent service, and a place that actually cares, this is it. Don't fall for the hype of the overcrowded tourist spots--this restaurant is the real deal.
