This restaurant was part of our tour around Teotihuacán and showcases more traditional dishes and ingredients. We had to get their Molcajete that uses a volcanic bowl that it then lit on fire to get some extra char. We also go the Taco de Chapulines (crickets) and Taco de Chinicuiles (agave worms) and they were crunchy. A great add for a more adventurous eater. They also had a traditional dance and singer that gave good ambiance. Overall, enjoyed visiting this restaurant and had a pleasant experience! Service was friendly and helpful too.

Lunch Buffet - Adult (MX $290/person)

Ordered: Lunch Buffet - Adult (MX $290/person) Aya's take: This is one of the least impressive meals I had on my trip to the Teotihuacan pyramids. If you're judging based off the ambiance and decor, you would expect to be in for a treat but you would be wrong. We had less than an hour to grab lunch and decided the Lunch Buffet would be better as there is no wait time and the buffet seemed to have a decent variety of options. A buffet implies you serve yourself but they had all the trays saran wrapped and one single worker serving food for the whole line. Eventually 1-2 more workers came but they were helping one person at a time. I don't understand why people couldn't serve themselves or at least have more employees around during the lunch rush. The soup was pretty good and the roasted chicken was the only item I went back for. I skipped dessert as none of them looked appetizing nor were any of them traditional Mexican desserts. Although not outrageous, it wasn't worth the price either. I highly suggest finding a different place for lunch or bringing lunch with you (if you're here with a tour group).

After a visit to the Teotihuacan pyramids, our private driver took us here because we didn't know La Gruta required a reservation to dine in. The interior decor reminded me of Pixar's Coco. We started out with a couple marguerita, quesadillas, and chips with guacamole. I ordered the 3 tacos, they were not bad except the chicken and the tortillas were kinda dry. I can't use any salsa in Mexico City because it's way too spicy, so lime juice it is. Hubby ordered the chicken fajitas and again it was dry. Our friends did enjoy their tasty chicken with mole and also a half chicken entree on bones. The waiter came out with some sombreros for us to take pictures with our drinks which was a nice touch. During our meal there was some live dancing and singing which was tips based. Overall we get to sit down and relax to enjoy our meal, and not be rushed out like a regular bus tour. I'm sure this restaurant gave commission to our driver, and I understand that's the way it works since it's a big tourist spot.

Familiar with tours that we have taken around the world, we knew there would be stops at specialty/gift stores and a restaurant stop for lunch or dinner. After our tour group left Teotihuacan, our guide brought us to Tlacalel for our late lunch. Knowing the protocol, we had packed lunches and were going to eat in the van. But the restaurant had a sitting area in front, so we ate there. We read the Yelp reviews and noted the mediocre food that the restaurant served in relation to the price you are paying. After eating, we used the rest rooms and walked into the restaurant. The dining room is relatively large and the gift shop was on the right, which we checked out. As other Yelpers have noted, there was an Aztec dancers performing in the dining room. After our stop of about an hour, our group was on the van and on our way. Another tour, an obligatory restaurant stop. But we were prepared.

We went here for lunch as part of a tour of the pyramids. Every tour in every country is like this - they take you to the actual place you want to see, then make you go to get lunch in a place with a bunch of tourist trap knick knacks to buy. So, just go into your tour expecting that. Now, for being a tourist trap, the food was good. We had the choice of a buffet for 100 pesos, or ordering off the menu. My old man got the buffet and thought it was good. I got the cheese enchiladas (130 pesos), and they were great. It is very expensive for Mexico - think US Mexican restaurant prices. But, what are you going to do? The beer is still cheap. Service was friendly. There are performers who I'm guessing are hoping to be tipped...kinda annoying, but just say no thank you if you don't want to tip them.

Best buffet we had on our trip. Lots of choices and everything I tasted was great. They had live music and festive clothing on. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because in my opinion, it was kind of expensive. About US$15 for lunch. I don't spend that much in America generally, and other places we went to in Mexico were a lot cheaper in comparison. Since it was such good food, if I was in the area I would probably return, Even though it's more money than I like to spend.

Tacos with the cheapest cut of beef available. They charged $150 pesos for three tacos with the worst cut of meat.

The prices are elevated as you could imagine for being in such a unique location. We just stopped for a snack and to experience the cave. So got 2 beers an americano, quesadilla and corn cakes with chicken. The quesadillas were made with a Mexican Oaxaca cheese instead the cheddar and Monterey Jack that's found in the states. So it was quite good. The corn cakes were sopes. I know what sopes are but I didn't know they they were translated into corn cakes. That's the problem with translating it into English. We got them with chicken they were also quite good. The corn cake base was tender, I'm used to them being hard and rubbery so it was nice to finally enjoy a sope. Service was prompt and friendly, there was a tablet with English which made it easy. The prices are high but it's the type of place that you go for the experience.

The vanilla pan dulce also tasted a little stale. On the other hand, the fruta mixta was fresh and one of the better parts of the meal. The setting is unique, which makes this place stand out. Eating inside a cave creates a cool atmosphere that you do not get at a typical restaurant. However, the food does not match the price point.

This place is a hidden gem--do not skip it…read more The restaurant itself is beautiful, with an amazing view, and from the moment we walked in, we felt completely at ease. Everything was spotless, welcoming, and thoughtfully done. It's owned and run by a local husband-and-wife team, and that personal care makes all the difference. We truly felt at home. Ernesto was incredible--knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely invested in making sure our entire family had a great experience. I speak Spanish, but he is also fluent in English, which made everything seamless. The food? Outstanding. My kids ordered the chicken tacos and finished every single bite. I had the tortilla soup, which was easily one of the best I've ever had--rich, comforting, and full of flavor. I also ordered a custom chicken breast stuffed with huitlacoche, and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. If you're looking for authentic food, excellent service, and a place that actually cares, this is it. Don't fall for the hype of the overcrowded tourist spots--this restaurant is the real deal. Perfect for families and anyone who appreciates amazing food made with heart.
