We were wandering around Ensenada and stumbled upon this food stand. I have to admit, the enormous banner with Anthony Bourdain's shining review of the stand helped. After stopping, we checked the Yelp score, and decided to take the plunge. Ok, maybe it was more of a wade than a plunge since we were still a little full. The stand was packed, but the line wasn't too bad for a weekday lunch. My guess is the line was tempered a bit due to the rain. After about 8 minutes, we got to the front and ordered one tostada - Fish with Pineapple & Habanero (they were out of mango for their typical menu item). It was crunchy, fresh, and packed with flavor - sweet + heat + acid. Definitely making this a stop next time we're in town. Another stop where it's better to have your pesos on you. They accept dollars, but at a premium.

This cart is pretty famous by local (and not so local) standards. Anthony Bourdain had this cart and the restaurant a couple doors down as one of his favorites. I was planning on eating at the restaurant but there was no parking four blocks because of some race that was going on. We double parked by the cart and ate there. Service was awesome but they only take cash here. I got two tostadas: the campechana and Bacalao with octopus. Dang they are great; even while eating standing up.

Walked here directly right off our cruise boat. It's about half a mile after you pass the main gate with all the tent vendors (about a mile from the cruise ship). It was a bit before noon but even then, there was already a line. Cash only and they took USD. What we swallowed: *SHRIMP TOSTADA: Crisp and delicious. I hit mine up with a bit of hot sauce (from the plentiful cart they have to the left after you order). The citrusy flavors with the juiciness of the shrimp and toppings, my mouth is watering as I type this. My group wasn't a big fan of seafood but I could easily have ordered another one to try. Don't miss this spot up! Anthony Bourdain gave his blessing to this place for a reason!

I came here as a stop from my cruise trip and it's so yummy. The seafood was not fishy at all. I was a little afraid but definitely recommend to come and try it. All choices are great and fresh. I'd definitely would want to come back here.

One of those famous food channel places for ceviche tostadas. Definitely a popular place but the ordering and getting your food moves along quickly. If you're not sure what to get, just ask. They're super friendly and help you out. I think prices have gone up. About $10 usd for one tostada. But it is a pretty good size and packed with ingredients. I got their #5 which has most everything and is spicy. It carries good heat and was filling. Worth a stop if you're visiting Ensenada and like ceviche. About a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise port.

Away from all the noise and street hustling - this spot is a gem. We ordered the shrimp tostadas, and they were refreshing and flavorful - perfect balance of lime, cilantro, onion, and all the good stuff. Tried the guava juice too, though it was a bit too thick for my taste. But that may just be me! Everyone working there was super friendly and helpful, and they even threw in avocado for free (which feels like a rare miracle these days). Heads up: it's cash only and it's a stand, not a restaurant, so don't roll up expecting tables and waiters. Just great food & fast.

Located within walking distance from the Cruise Ship Port of Ensenada, La Guerrerense (meaning from the Mexican state of Guerrero) serves up delicious, filled to the edge seafood tostadas. It has been in business since 1960 (with current chef and owner taking over in 1976), with the original and current owner being internationally recognized for the use of fresh seafood, prepared with celebrated expertise and generosity. It's still served out of a modern street cart, and there is no seating...you have to eat it standing up. My brother and I found it to be well worth it. There is a ton of online content for La Guerrenrense, with enough positive posts to make this our most important stop during a cruise port day in Ensenada. Maps clearly indicates the location, but before the scheduled opening time, there is no indication of any sort of food event on that corner. We arrived around 9:15, with posted online hours indicating a 10:00 opening time. We ended up wandering around a bit, and noticed a storefront about one block north with signs indicating that we were in the right spot (it's the building with the billboard advertising notary services). It also gave the hours for La Guerrenrense (10:30) and its sister sit-down restaurant, Sabina, being 10. We later learned that this storefront is where all the supplies and signage for the food truck is stored overnight. By 9:45, it was clear where the food stand was going to be, and we could see all the fresh seafood for the day being brought in containers. While we waited for opening, I had a chance to walk across the street to Sabina's. People there were being served in a nice outdoor courtyard after 10, and we considered going there instead but ultimately decided to get the original food cart experience. We ended up being the 2nd group in line, and they opened a bit early at 10:20. You order and pay upfront. Everything is made to order, with ingredients being mixed in front of you as you move thru the line. The line had gotten to be 10 groups deep by this time, and it took patience to navigate. We got six of their most popular tostadas (each being MX$180, or about $10 USD), and I got my seafood cocktail (Large for MX$290). Because it is made in front of you, you can completely customize the ingredients (service is good), and in one case, they had to change the ingredients to replace a missing item...this ended up being my favorite bite. Tostadas: #1 Singapur (crab salad with shrimp, octopus, and scallops). #2 Ceviche de erizo con almeja (sea urchin ceviche with clam) #3 Guerrerense con camaron (tuna cubes marinated in Orange Juice and Shrimp) #4 Campechana (tuna ceviche with shrimp, octopus, snail, scallop, and clam. #5 Edy Power (Tuna, mango, and habanero cebiche with sea snail) #7 Pate pescado con callo (fish pate with scallop) Coctel: choice of up to eight different seafood choices, with me choosing shrimp, octopus, scallops, clam, oyster and sea snail and skipping the black clam and mussels. The blend is made in front of you, using clamato as the base and squirts of different ingredients (including ketchup and hot sauce). One caveat: a large piece of shell from the sea snail almost took out a filling...eating freshest seafood can be dangerous? This experience also confirmed my thought that perfectly ripe avocado slices (sliced thinly) is a must for cold seafood dishes like this. Here medium ripe avocados were expertly prepared to go on top. There was space for 3 tostada on each reusable plastic plates, which ended up being fortuitous since you have to eat standing up and one plate per person is probably the least risky to carry around. I did put all six salsas to sample, but ended up not needing any of it. So....my favorite was an improvised dish: They were out of clams, so I asked them to replace it with octopus. So the dish (I think) was the fish pate (made with marlin), topped with cooked octopus. My brother said I made an involuntary groan as I took my first crunchy bite...it was that hard hitting. The octopus is the best I've eaten at this price point. It had been tenderized and cooked in such a way that it was as tender as shrimp or scallops. The fresh mexican shrimp is also very good here in all the dishes, served whole in the cocktail and diced in big chunks in the tostadas. The standard size of the tostada is the base for how much seafood is piled on top, just enough so it doesn't topple over. Typical fillers like cucumbers and onions are used as enhancers, not fillers. If one is visiting Ensenada, it clearly indicates how fresh the sourced seafood can be here, with spectacular dishes if prepared in the right hands. It became my gateway to seafood restaurants here, making me want to visit others to see what food creativity/flavors exist. The possibilities seem limitless.

Really fresh and plentiful tostadas. A must visit whenever we are in Ensenada. Friendly staff who help you with the menu.

Talk about gourmet street food!! Where the heck am I? Near a stop sigh on a busy party street. We heard about this place thanks to Anthony Bourdain (RIP). He never steered me wrong. It was a busy food truck and well worth it. It was so incredibly fresh and full of all the flavors!!! Near America prices but still worth the flavor and experience. The hard part is picking which flavors!!!

Best Seafood tostadas ever! The scallop one is uniquely divine. We are going to visit Ensenada again just to eat her seafood tostadas. Anthony Bourdain highly regarded her spot. The combination of flavors and freshness is unbeatable.

There was a long waitlist (about 40min and we didn't have the time for that as this was a few hour stop for our cruise). We were able to order to go and just ate outside. However when you do to go - they put everything on the side instead of inside the taco shell which was a little annoying since I was eating it right then. You can also get drinks to go. Strawberry marg 10/10 - they put taijin on the rim or something similar. Fish taco 8/10 Shrimp taco 10/10

Singaporean tostada, speciality sea urchin tostada, sea snail tostada
    Vivian T.

We sat at the restaurant across the street from the popular street stand and got seated right away. The complimentary chips and salsa were great. We ordered 8 tostadas and margaritas (mango and strawberry) to share amongst the 4 of us. Our favorite tostada was the singaporean one. Unfortunately the sea snails tostada and the specialty tostada with sea urchin on it were extremely fishy. For the price - which is a bit expensive for tostadas, we expected fresher seafood since we were close to the ocean. Was good to try it out though, maybe the stand outside has fresher seafood since the line goes by faster.

    The best tostada ever
    Todd P.

We came here on a tour so I only was able to sample one tostada. It was a mixed seafood tostada, and was the best tostada I've ever had. Anthony Bourdain discovered this restaurant many years ago and was so enthusiastic about the owner that he sponsored her in a world taco competition which she won. After sampling one tostada now we know why. It is a must try experience in Ensenada.

Today, the 21st of November was our lucky day as we were craving the freshest ceviche Ensenada has to offer and experiencce the five star rating Muelle 3 was known for. Our party of 4 chose to sit outside to eat lunch on this cool, cloudy Friday afternoon and be exposed to the sights and sounds of this busy commercial and fishing port. Within minutes of getting settled, our free appetizer - Tortilla Espanola and a plate full of lemon & lime slices with an oyster shell-full of sea salt and chili powder occupied the center of our table. Then came the Ceviche de la casa. A winner in my book of ceviches! Plus a coaster-sized, fresh off the pan tortilla chips gave it a unique serving style. We had to order another bowl of tortillas because eating ceviche without it just won't be the same. The Calamar frito were perefectly breaded, without excess flour and grease in every bite. Another winner! Last but not the least is the Pasta de Mar with the clams of different sizes and pre-cut scallops in the their shell. Muy Delicioso! More hungry patrons started arriving and we still got prompt service. I will make it a point to grab a satisfying seafood dish or two here the next time I visit Ensenada whether by car or by cruise ship.

My fellowship, a cluster of mere mortals with taste far keener than foresight, insisted we seek a place foretold in gustatory prophecy: La Cocedora de Langosta. I assented, though the sea had begun to speak again. A cruel trick of salt and memory. We arrived. The lobster was not served--it presented itself. Shell split like prophecy fulfilled, meat steaming with tales older than Atlantis. The ceviche? Lime and fire in perfect alchemy. It hissed in my mouth like the last words of a betrayed siren. A whole fish, fried until its soul ascended, left bones so clean they could be used in ritual. Angels wept; I salted accordingly. The risotto arrived next, not on a plate but in a chalice. Each bite stirred marrow and memory, comfort and command. My sea legs stood straighter. My resolve thickened. Libations flowed--freely, fervently, faultlessly. The chalice refilled itself (or perhaps the staff were trained in illusion and replenishment). Laughter, clinking glass, and something close to joy dared to rise. Staff were keen-eyed adepts, operating with the grace of trained familiars. The atmosphere carried hints of volcanic enchantment and citrus optimism. Barry the Brave Muffin Baker--my misguided nemesis-ally--might have found peace here. Or at least, a decent aioli. Verdict: A rare convergence of flesh, flavor, and fate. Five stars scorched upon the firmament by my hand. I may never return. But that's only because the enchantment forbade it.

The original location was where the modern fish taco was born supposedly. It all started when Mesoamericans nixtamalized maize, which became flatbreads. Eventually it led to corn tortillas, which were used to hold various fillings like seafood. The Spanish Colonial period introduced new ingredients and cooking techniques. Japanese fishermen in Baja California during the early 20th century helped popularize tempura-style frying. Seafood vendors brought batter fish to the mercado in the 50s/60s, which became a hit. Then a San Diego State University student opened the first Rubio's a couple decades later, and now fish tacos are enjoyed by everyone today. I didn't spend much time here because I had to make it back onto the cruise ship. But as someone who appreciates food and history, it was nice to walk around. The original mercado shuttered in 1967 and the vendors relocated to the waterfront, and eventually moved into the building you see now. Lots of stalls selling all different types of seafood. There's also restaurants nearby where you can order ceviche, cocteles, oysters, and other regional specialties. Thus we made a point to stop by for food during our second cruise stop in Ensenada, 4 days later. We discovered the large crowds were not in line waiting, but were instead enjoying their ceviche and other cold seafood while standing up. It made for a festive atmosphere, definitely ramping up the enjoyment of really great tasting seafood. The food stall is located facing the main road of Ensenada (walking distance from the cruise port) and is separated into two parts: the front serving seafood tostadas and the back serving cocktails and aquachiles. Each had different lines, with a common guy accepting payment after delivery. They have been doing this for a while (1981?) and things are efficient. I wanted one thing, which was the mixed cocktail with all the seafood available (campechano, a word I've come to love since moving to the LA area). They have 4 sizes from chico ($105) to jumbo ($360). The seafood mix is diced together ahead of time to save on time, and are mostly diced pretty fine. The mix is prepared fresh though, and was ready in about a minute. It was excellent, refreshing and just the right amount for me. I had wanted to try the seafood cocktail again from La Guerrerense (another nearby famous seafood stand), so that was our first stop during our second visit to Ensenada in 5 days. We then visited other sites in the area, saving El Guero for the end before we headed back to the ship. As expected the cocktail from Guerrerense was very good, but this version from El Guero was even better....better selection of seafood, and more finely mixed to give a better representation of the different textures of the freshness. That would make it the best seafood cocktail I've ever enjoyed.

The restaurant feels more upscale than expected, but still clearly a place locals frequent, which is usually a good sign. It specializes in seafood. If you don't speak Spanish, they do provide an English menu, though prices are listed in pesos. We ordered 6 tacos total, 4 fish and 2 shrimp, along with 2 cokes and 2 bottled waters. They also brought complimentary chips, salsas, lime, and cabbage, plus ketchup and mayo on the side (we didn't end up using those). The tacos were simple but very well done. The fish and shrimp were fried fresh, light and crispy without being greasy. The shrimp was my favorite. The pico de gallo was fresh and flavorful, and the lime and cabbage added a good balance and crunch. I honestly wish I would've ordered their whole fried fish because it looked incredible, but there's no way two people could've finished it in one sitting. The restaurant itself was clean, and the staff were extremely attentive. The service felt high-class in the sense that they were very respectful and treated the experience with care, almost like a fine dining environment, while still being approachable. Total came out to about $40 USD with a 20% tip ($34 before tip), which is excellent value for the quality and portion. Overall, this is a solid seafood spot in Ensenada. Simple food done right, elevated by great service and a clean, welcoming environment.

He was super patient knowing Spanish was not our forte. The appetizers were homemade tortilla chips and salsa. We ended up ordering two dozen oysters and and a seafood tower. I ordered an octopus taco, grilled to a tender texture and smokey flavor. The portions were very hefty and satisfying. The inside of the restaurant is very spacious and confortable. When we arrived, the restaurant was just getting busy probably due to Independence Day. Despite the busyness, all the staff were extremely attentive and friendly. Muchísimas gracias!

But figured I needed a better way to eat it while visiting Ensenada again with my wife. So this time, went to the nearby sister restaurant, Sabina. It's named for the owner of the original food stand, and there are a lot of pictures of her with other celebrities who appreciated her talent in creating seafood combinations. The Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant is within walking distance from the cruise port, and is located in an area with a lot of other restaurants and shops. We came there soon after it opened around 10 am, and had the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We showed that we were coming from California, by choosing indoor seating. We were given colorful menus and suggestions. We also got complementary chips and salsa, with 4 different varieties of her famous salsas being served. I tried all four of them, and two of them were way too hot, even in moderation. I did really like the green salsa, which tasted more like a simple guacamole. It also came with thinly slices of lime...each small slice producing so much more juice than any lime we get in California. My wife doesn't like raw seafood, so chose garlic shrimp (Caramones al Mojo de Ajo for Mex$405). There were plenty of jumbo headless, shell-on white shrimp, with the butter sauce being very light and not too garlicky. It came with a very good rice pilaf and sauteed vegetables (mostly squash which neither of us are a fan of). I went with 3 choices from the 5 selection 'Champion' list: 1. Erizo con Almeja (Sea Urchin with Clam for Mex$230) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2011 for Best Original Showmanship 2. Caracol con Lajas de Caracol (Mixed Ceviche with Sea Snail for Mex$209) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2012 for Best in Show 3. Singapur (Mex$209) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2013 for unknown category). All three were piled high with fresh seafood, embellished with perfectly ripe avocado slices. None of them needed additional salsa, but adding a squeeze of lime enhanced. My favorite was the Singapore and would try the other two tostadas on the winners list the next time. The best way would be to order all the tostadas and split amongst a group of 4 or 5 friends (there are 6 other special tostadas and you can also create your own with the fresh seafood ingredients). Got two bottles of water (Mex$75 each...not cheap) and a local beer (Vera Niega Mexican Ale, a bottle being Mex$110) that was excellent. Service was attentive and friendly throughout, with multiple servers (Horacio and Antonio) attending to us, all trying to make sure we had a good time. Credit cards are accepted, using a modern tableside POS, and I was happy to pay a gratuity over what is customary. Bathrooms are modern, with individual stalls (most of them gender neutral) all sharing a nice common set of sinks. My wife and I left in fine spirits and it was beginning to fill up more as we left (all dining al fresco, of course). Dining at the nearby original food cart is worth the initial experience, but there is something to having food this good in a sit-down restaurant. Sabina is that place.

This is a spot that you can sit down and drink a beer and get the same amazing seafood. My favorites were the sea urchin tostada as well as the bluefin tostada with fried leaks on top of it. A bonus is that they give you salsa and chips with four different types of salsas. We also grabbed a couple of beers in margaritas which were amazing as well. This is a great spot for a well-known sit down restaurant for seafood tostadas.
