This place was my go-to place when I lived in Madrid. The downtown location (C/ Señores de Luzon) was walking distance from home (I lived at Plaza del Cordon), prices were very fair, and quality was really great. This is a great place for tourists to Madrid who may not have the time or opportunity to get over to Barcelona/Catalonia. Can Punyetes offers a nice variety of primarily Catalan specialties at very reasonable prices. They grill most of the food (including the bread for the pan tumaca) over a real wood fire. I usually went with grilled quail, but everything was always good. They have a lot of great wine options, and you can try your hand at drinking from a porron. The best option on the dessert menu, in my opinion) was always the pastel de castanyas (a chocolate and chestnut pie), though of course they also serve an excellent crema catalana (like a crème brulee). If ever I return to Madrid, Can Punyetes will be my first stop.

When the check came, we attempted to split the bill and again, the owner scoffed at us and told us to make up our mind and to get out as they are closing. He proceeded to tell us that we "aren't accustomed to their schedule" (even though at the time of making the reservation, none of this seemed to be a problem). NOT TOURIST FRIENDLY. In summary, don't make reservations and assume that you're welcomed here. You will be kicked out. Very impolite and, honestly, not worth the mediocre food. There are better places to eat in Madrid. The spot is upstairs and on the small side so if you're a larger party you'll be a tight squeeze. They do have an English menu. We ordered some broad beans with Jambon, garlic shrimps and seafood paella. All of it was delicious and unique. We did a two person portion of the paella for three people and it was perfect. We were all full without being stuffed. I think for paella it is a minimum of two peoples portions per order but the folks next to us was only two people and their plates were massive so plan accordingly. The seafood in the paella was fresh and huge portions. The shrimp still had the shell on so it was slightly messy peeling it. Every bite was flavorful. This was my first time eating broad beans cooked this way. It was slightly briney but not salty at all. The texture is what you expect of beans, firm and not mushy like peas. The garlic shrimp was good. The portion was a good size. The texture of the shrimp was good too. Perfectly cooked. It wasn't as garlicky like some of the other places I've tried it but it was still delicious.
