They all took the time to listen and care for the specialized needs most recently for my sweet Bozzy boy, especially Theresa the vet tech who knew Boz so well and how best to handle him along with Dr. Blumenthal's expertise. I wouldn't bring my dogs here if you paid me. We have been coming here for over 10 yrs and after the ownership change I have never felt completely happy with the service of care but after my last experience with Dr Zimmermann I will never go back. He was of course running late and checks my 4 month old puppy in the back and comes in and says he has lesions all over his body and he's never seen that on a puppy before and he's trying to figure out how he should treat it he decides to put him on a aggressive treatment of steroids then says he's running late for his next appointment, doesn't even test what it is and leaves the room with no other explanation of when to see him again or next steps. NO ONE calls to check back on how he's doing on his VERY aggressive steroids his on. I had to take him somewhere else to get an actual diagnosis and spend another $400 something dollars. My pup and I had an excellent experience. The staff, tech (thank you Bryce) and doctors were all very professional, kind and very thorough throughout the visit. My dog who typically has vet anxiety was very calm and happy due to how they treated her and the vibe set. This is really important to us. An asolutely terrible experience. We have been going to this clinic for 25 years, through mutiple ownships. Our dog was suffering, we called the office and they told us we couldnt get in until late afternoon. We were panicked but they told us twice they could not see her until late in the day. We finally decided to go to another clinic after telling the clinic the situation. The othe clinic said bring her in right away, which we did. We ultimately had to put our beloved dog down, to take her out of her misery. Shame on you. read more

My Basenji was attacked by an off leash pit bull by a couple of trespassers. The wounds on my dog's neck were extremely severe and life threatening. I immediately took him to Pet Emergency & Specialty Center, who did an amazing job saving my little ones life. I was told to bring him to my vet the next day for a follow up and to change the bandages. Come to find out my vet had a recent flood and was closed for two weeks. I proceeded to call 12 different vets to schedule a same day appointment with no luck. No openings or not accepting new clients was the common theme. On my 13th call, I landed on La Jolla Veterinary Hospital. Although I wish this situation on no one, it was a blessing none of the previous 12 clinics were available. From the Veterinary Assistants (Jaime & Kara) to the phenomenal Doctor team of Dr. Breher, Dr. Meyer and Dr. Sarlati, I could not have dreamed to find a better group to care for my loved one. After two weeks and several appointments later, he is on a solid road to recovery. You will receive adequate service but their fees are outrageous. There are plenty of alternatives in the neighborhood, several in and around the village, Bird Rock, and PB with fees around two-third or less than what you'll pay here and service as good or better. It's unfortunate when a clinic gets sold off and the new owners overpaid and have to get their "margins." No one wins unfortunately and their only bet is to capture more and more market to monopolize and control the prices. For example, they also own Coastview Vet on 3895 Clairemont Dr and Balboa--they also charge the same high fees. I would advise going elsewhere. We gave them a chance for a couple years after they changed hands. We now go to Village Vet and are happy with their services and prices. I urge everyone to shop around and take advantage of our free market. There are plenty of options in the neighborhood. read more

Our favorite vet left the practice so we're moving on. My biggest issue is that La Jolla Vet does not allow you to enter the exam room (let alone the building) with your pet - as of October 2022. I've also been annoyed with random charges and high prescription prices. When I was away and a friend dropped my dog off for a sudden illness, a charge for a heart worm medication snuck onto the bill. It was unnecessary and I felt like they took advantage of the situation. Prescription prices direct from this office are outrageously high. I paid $100 more for one of my pet's medications vs competitors. The care at this facility was good for the past 3 years. But now that our favorite veterinarian has moved on, so will I - it's not worth dealing with the administrative issues at this veterinary practice. read more

We recently adopted a new puppy and were looking for a vet that was much closer to home with better hours. Our previous vet was amazing, but just too far to go there regularly. La Jolla Veterinary Hospital was on the list of vets that offered a complimentary exam that was included as part of our adoption, so we decided to give them a try. During our first visit, both the vet (Dr. Isabelle Gerbatsch) and vet tech were very patient with us as we provided the history we had on our puppy and what vaccinations were needed. We received a lot of information and guidance on the vaccines. I also appreciated that Dr. Izzy came out to not only give us an update on our pup, but introduce herself and explain the veterinary practice in general to us along with providing recommendations for trainers. After each vet visit, they provide a report card that includes vitals, the reason for the visit, notes, etc. which they email to you. The staff is very responsive to emails and they offer appointment scheduling online as well. They currently are only allowing pets inside the practice though, so you still have to call from the parking lot (in the back by CVS) or in the front when you arrive. Our pup has only been for vaccines and getting his monthly Simparica trio meds, but so far the staff has been very responsive and friendly! read more

I dealt with this hospital during covid as it was incredibly hard to get appointments during the early days of the pandemic. I honestly can't remember the exact reason for the visit, but I know it must have been somewhat urgent if I couldn't wait to see my regular vet. What I remember was they made room to see my kitty and didn't charge me an arm and a leg like most vets do. They had suggestions and called to check up on her a day or two later. I hated not being able to go in with her (having to put her on the sidewalk and step away like I'm passing on live ordinance), but they were very reassuring and kind to us both. I told them how come u did not do all the test on first blood test ?? Looks to me they need to save blood and charge more & more. To do blood test over & over. Like They give the medication that my dog becomes more sick and start bleeding. I give up on this vet i took my dog to other vet they notice this lajolla vet give wrong medication to my dog. I retuned the medication to them i told them credit the $ 157 i paid for it i only use one tablet they took the medication but they did not credit that to my acct. i spend lots money there but no result. Looks like new owners are from back east they move to lajolla and they want to be rich very very soon from the resident of lajolla they totally scam. Every time different assistant tell me different price and different exam my dog need. I stop going there. Thank god i took my dog to another vet in one visit to new vet. he is doing great. Our dog was bleeding from an accident and we live close so we ran there. They said they couldn't help our dog because their vet had just left (even tho they were still open, but whatever) who was bleeding profusely and in terrible pain. We asked where we could go after hours and they gave us a list of urgent cares. We asked if they were all open, since they were closed as are most vets on Friday at 6pm. The woman was so rude and acted like we were idiots for asking, before saying yes and giving us the paper with the list. So we drive with our dog bleeding out all over us to the closest one on their list AND IT IS CLOSED and closes at the same time as they do. So we wasted an hour with our dog bleeding crying in pain just to drive to another urgent care in the other direction. Maybe if a dog comes in bleeding, 1) don't be rude and 2) don't tell the owners to go somewhere closed while the dog bleeds out. Thanks! read more

A 1 star review is incredibly rare for me. I just took my dog here to get a flea bath and waiting for almost 5 hours to get him back... I'm a LJ local and I just came back from a trip where my sister-in-law's cat had fleas. So all I wanted was for my dog to get a flea bath just so that he could come home and chill, flea free... They told me it would take about 2.5 hours tops. I know some shops take a little longer than usual, but the voicemail I received at about 4pm saying that they "didn't know he was there for a flea bath" definitely concerned me. Not only that, but I didn't know that they also give my dog flea meds with the flea bath. I wasn't told this on the phone when I scheduled an appointment, nor did they even call me to tell me they were going to give my dog the meds. The issue is, is that he is already on Bravecto flea meds. So they basically overdosed my dog! And when I picked him up, they told me to just wait it out and just see what happens?! Seriously, if he goes to the hospital for serious issues or develops any issues. This is on you guys. This mistake could have totally been avoided and needs to be trained by management. Won't be back due to this mistake. Can't image what else they're doing to other dogs. read more

I've only had good experience coming here so far. Nala (my sharpei) has been coming to this location for couple months now. Years later and still 5 stars to Dr G and his staff at this location. My cane corso pit bull mix needed emergency shots today to be boarded last minute. I mean I called at 3 and they closed at 4. They were so clutch they got my dog (Big Paw Paw) got him his shots so I could make it back to the doggie daycare by 4pm with the shot record in hand! Huge thank you to the staff for getting this done so quickly because they didn't have to squeeze us in but they did and I seriously cannot thank them enough for always taking such good care of my dogs regardless of their breed! read more

We have used, and loved, this vet hospital for nearly 30 years. But something drastically changed in 2022. And, sadly, not for the better. Two of our favorite vets left midway through 2022. We heard, but haven't confirmed, it was sold in 2022 to a large out of town conglomerate. The prices have skyrocketed! Prescriptions are 3 to 4 times what they were a year ago. I was traveling with my dog I needed a health certificate to return back to the Hawaiian islands. At this point I had called 30 different vets to try to get an appointment. Everyone said they were booked out until November. They actually answered the phone! And I even got to speak with a real human! They were very accommodating and got me in on the weekend before my departure. They were wonderful. The other vets I spoke to wanted to charge me nearly $400. This visit only cost me $150. The doctor came out to my car to speak with me about my dog and the paperwork necessary for an easy return. I would highly recommend this veterinary hospital. read more

I have only used these guys a few times now but I have to say i really like them so far and the experience has been good. My cat needed a cardiologist and they have one available that charges way less than anywhere else. They gave my cat Lucky some tests and it showed elevated levels of something that indicated possible renal failure and told me to come back in two months. He was showing symptoms of this previously. I made an appointment to go back in two months but I was a no show/ no call. I walked in a couple days later (with cat) and explained to them it was not my cat Luckys fault the appointment was missed, it was mine. They immediately took him and gave him the test, he was out in 10 mins. (Please don't be a flake like me and miss your appointment.) After first visit their doctor called me and spent CONSIDERABLE time on the phone with me going over Lucky's condition and recommendations for him. As I was leaving last time after they bought Lucky out the girl asked me if 'can we use the card on file for payment?' The card they have on file is no good anymore, I could have very easily said yes and walked away but I gave them good card. The point I am trying to make is maybe these guys are not like the other vets who basically put a gun to your head/ ask for your firstborn child to get the money before you leave. The money was kind of like an after thought to them. This made me feel like they care more about my cat Lucky getting well than the money. This is good! I have a horrible experience with this office. The first thing they do is to make you sign an agreement whether you are willing to pay max $1500 or exceeding $1500 before they will start assessment and treatment on your pet. I found this pricing policy unethical because they did not even have a diagnosis of my pet. You walked in the door and it is $1500 agreement. After I spent more than 1.5 hours there and paid almost $1400 at the office, immediately they asked me to go straight from their office to the ER as they don't have the equipment to take care of my pet. They should have just sent me straight to the ER instead of wasting my time and money there. The ER which is veterinary specialty hospital is literally 7.2 miles away located in sorrento valley, approximately 15 minutes drive. But instead, they prioritized collecting their money first before your pet's well being. read more

Terrible money oriented service with poor bed side manners in treating pets.

It's been over 6 weeks since this place painfully damaged the left facial side,inner ear, eye and optic nerve of my poor little rescue pup who was super to be treated for a relatively routine ear infection due to their incompetence and malpractice. Not only did they try to send her to someone else because it was obviously over their head but then they were rude and crude. As a long time animal advocate and ER/surgical nurse I can attest to their failure to NOT hurt their vulnerable patient. Not only did they turn a sweet little dog into a special needs dog that has to endure medical treatments every 3-4 hours around the clock but they haven't even called to ask about her and I was the one who found and made an appointment with an eye vet hoping to help assuage some of the damage they did to her eye sight (corneal ulcer) inner ear cochlea (balance) and nasopharyngeal nerve controlling secretions and scent, all of which are important to a pup. I'm not even mentioning her PTSD where she looks frantic when she even sees the caps of the many meds being removed to use them for her treatments which occur every 3-4 hours around the clock. Their incompetence has made both her life, my life and her rescue companion's terrible as she was always the welcoming party and shared her toys and playtime with them. She is a doll and did not deserve any of it. Why this nasty hospital didn't move their practice temporarily instead of grubbing for cash in that hovel is beyond this nurses understanding as I believe the patient always comes first and to do NO harm! Wonder if they have ever heard of either of those principles? read more

Starting with Dana who helped me on the phone, she went above and beyond to find a spot in their already packed day and was so kind and understanding. Then Nicole took such wonderful care of her - from greeting us at the car to providing very regular updates (because of Covid-19 we had car service), the whole experience was seamless. Then a mass exodus of docs and staff took place and the new owners, instead of alerting it's loyal clients that they were no longer capable of providing even a modicum of the most basic care began a construction project and stayed open. My dogs have been sick with no relief for 5weeks. They've seen three different docs, each one running the same tests over and over to no avail and with no follow-up. Three thousand dollars later my dogs are still ill and the only advice I was given today was to "be kind" as they navigate through this difficult construction project. If you care for your pet everyplace else is a better option. La Jolla Veterinary Hospital cares but, only about you credit card, past that you are on your own! read more

I had hesitated writing a review, but after my second bad experience I felt I had to. First bad experience (boarding): I had dropped of two of my dogs there for a week long stay, thinking the would be well cared for. Upon returning to San Diego, I picked them up at 7:00 in the morning, because I missed them. One dog came out covered in poop and something green that might have been a deodorizer. They said she had just pooped in her cage (which seems unlikely); and even though they say they would call if additional services, I never received a call. The other had an eye infection so severe it was crusted over and she could not open her eye. I immediately took her home and bathed her (should have taken a photo first), and when I called the staff said the never noticed. We even paid extra for "cuddle time", so I don't know how someone could not notice. And then today, I put in a medication request for my dogs on Chewy.com. So the vet called and said I needed an appointment, so I made one for this Friday. 15 minutes later I received another call saying I needed an appointment so I explained that I just made on. There was no record of it, and when I asked if the young woman could figure out who called me she said there are like 15 people working so she had no idea but I needed an appointment. There was no opening on Friday, and I could not get in for more than another week. When she asked what I wanted to do, I said I would like my appointment that I had scheduled for Friday - to which she said is not possible. When I said I would find another vet, she the FINE - GOODBYE. I would highly recommend staying far away from this business, either as a boarding facility or a veterinary clinic. read more

I had only good experiences pre 2022 but of late have felt the prices have increased and they have started to recommend unnecessary and costly treatments. We were seeing Dr G in La Mesa for several years and when we heard he moved we hesitated following him due to the distance and the fact our older dog didn't like the car. After getting not the greatest care with another vet clinic, we decided to make the journey and see Dr. G. I should have done it to begin with. Dr. G is an amazing vet, he listens, asks questions and is very caring. Unfortunately, my almost 14 year old Boston had to be put down. This was one of the hardest decisions, but I had the support of the La Jolla Vet Hospital. Everyone that works there is so kind, sympathetic and caring. We felt cared for.
