What a find! We were town hopping and I was thrilled to find a super vegan-friendly establishment…read morein Manarola. I wish I was hungrier so I could've had something more substantial, because they had all sorts of veganized Italian entrees, including lasagna! I was in the mood for farinata, a chickpea flour pancake, and wine, so I ordered that and then grabbed a croissant to have the next morning. The man working behind the counter was very friendly, and confirmed the farinata was vegan (it was one of the few things not clearly marked, even though it's almost always vegan). This place is small and very popular with tourists, as he makes it very easy for foreigners to order with multiple translations of the menu on poster boards. It makes it look like a tourist trap but really, he's just accommodating as many people as possible. The farinata was delicious! It reminded me of the socca I had in Nice, and it paired perfectly with a local white wine. The croissant was great, too, even the next day. I'd definitely come back for lunch, there's so much good looking food.

What a happy surprise! The rustic dining room is overlaid with elegance as there are fine little touches in every detail. The food was superb, from the bread through dessert. Traditional foods are given a modern finesse. For example, the risotto was served with shrimp and lard. Lard? Really? I was told this is traditional. I couldn't imagine ordering something with lard, let alone eating it, so I ordered the risotto thinking I would pick out the lard. Silly me! There were a small number of small cubes on the risotto that were crisped and tasted like pork belly. So this is lard! Sometimes you just have to try something out of your comfort zone when you are in the right setting. I am glad I did! If you are traveling in Tuscany and visit San Gimignano, I highly recommend San Martino 26 for dinner--it is an elegant and delicious end to the day.

Our server told us that this previously a cave. How often do you get to dine in a cave? The inside of the restaurant is of this stone like space. We were immediately captivated. While it does not currently have a Michelin rating, we were told it previously had a Micheline rating. The atmosphere is that of a cave...cool, a little damp, and intimate. San Guiseppe has wine cellar, according to staff, date back. We felt totally and complete immersed in history and that was only the building. centuries of Sienese life. The cuisine honors Tuscan tradition while elevating it through precision and care. Each dish showcases excellent ingredients and confident execution, embracing regional flavors rather than reinventing them. San Guissppe feature traditional dishes such as handmade pasta, rich sauces, and tenders meats showcasing distinct flavors with bold seasoning. We order lasaguna and cheese salad...absolutely superb! Our servers were superior...waiting on you hand and foot. You did not ask for anything as it was already there. Our server, Marco, was kind, humorous and knowledgeable. Since it was our first time to the restaurant he was super patient and informative regarding menu items. La Taverna di San Giuseppe has s long-term Michelin recognition for a reason...superior food and excellent service in a very unique space. We savored every bite and sip we consumed in San Giuseppe. When we are in Tuscany again, we will make a beeline for this restaurant.

We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

It was easy to search for nearby restaurants and be guided to our destination! We had to wait quite a bit before we had the server bring water to the table.... I never understand why bussing a table, when there is no one waiting for a table would take priority over the customers seated and waiting... and waiting.... However, the food was AMAZING. I went here for the first time about a month ago…read more LOCATION: It's located across the Arno, away from the busier areas of the city, but still not too far of a walk from it all either. 3/5 ATMOSPHERE: It's not too big inside, but it's not super small either. The decor is pretty simple, but not too boring. I mean, it's not amazing, but it has sort of a chill vibe, with white brick walls, dim lighting, and wine bottle-lined shelves on some of the walls. 3/5 SELECTION: On their website, their menu is described with, "Our menu is characterized by using genuine raw materials, preferably organic and seasonal products, it changes every month. You can taste both traditional Tuscan dishes that our personal reinterpretations." What I like most about their menu is that they use organic and seasonal products, and they have a good handful of clearly-labeled vegan options, but I will say that I wish there was a bit more variety in the vegan options, as most of them are soups and vegetables. 3/5 WHAT I GOT: I got the "Cous Cous o Riso al naturale con verdure a scelta dalla vetrina," which basically translates to "cous cous or rice with seasonal vegetables." I got it with rice. It was pretty good overall, and the one negative I have is that it was too oily -- like you can tell from my picture. But other than that, the actually quality of it all was good, and all the different vegetables tasted fresh, and they were thoroughly cooked. The rice wasn't under or overcooked either. Plus, it was a pretty good price (€8), as was most of the rest of the menu (reasonably-priced), especially for a restaurant that looks nicer than what you typically come across there, and that has higher standards (organic produce, etc.). 3/5 SERVICE: The service was pretty good. Our waitress seemed nice and friendly, and our food didn't take too long or anything to come out. The only complaint I have is that their website says they open for dinner at 6pm, but we went there at 6pm, and they said they start serving dinner at 7pm, which was annoying. But, we somehow managed to find some places nearby to look around at and whatnot while waiting. 3/5
