    Home-made chips and salsa

My husband and I chanced upon this place while on vacation in Pentwater. Great little Mexican joint tucked into the back of a Latin American grocery store on N Oceana Drive, from the road the place looks desolate and closed, but don't be fooled, it's open and delicious tacos beckon! Yay for awesome ethnic food in the ethnic-food desert that is Oceana County! After we ordered, the kitchen brought out two delicious salsas, one smoked ancho salsa and one spicy tomatillo (salsa verde), with home-made tortilla chips. We had some delicious tacos, the carnitas was amazing, the tripe could have been deep-fried a little longer but no matter, it was suitably funky as tripe can often be, and tasty shrimp gorditas. The salsas went wonderfully with the food. On the way out, picked up some delicious and cheap Latin American groceries, including produce, mangoes for $0.65/each, limes for $0.10/each! Great little place, will definitely be back when we're in the area again next summer.

So good! Your typical divey mercado and restaurant in the back. But, one of THE BEST AL PASTOR tacos I've ever had. I eat a lot of Mexican food...A LOT. I love La Probadita and I'm so glad that I came here. Now I have 2 delicious authentic Mexican places in Hart. Tacos and Tortas for days!!! Yummm!

This is a fairly typical authentic Mexican-style lunch counter designed for people familiar with Mexican food as it is served and prepared in Mexico. If you were looking for the Taco Bell, this is NOT it. You'll find a full-service Mexican grocery inside this dingy old building. When we came in on a Thursday at lunchtime the husband (presumably Pancho) was sitting outside in the van, and he got out and came inside with us. His wife was mopping the concrete floor. The TV was blaring a Mexican soap opera. Their small child was sitting on the floor behind the counter reading comics. We ordered tacos at $1.50 each. They come on soft maize (corn) tortillas, with cilanto y cebollo (onions). Choices of taco include al pastor, pollo, bifstec, tripa, and others. Excellent tacos, authentic hot sauces served in two bowls, served with a lime wedge. This is not a place to take your prom date, but it is good food, reasonably priced, and if you have ever eaten lunch in Ensenada, Baja California, then this place brings you right back there.

The aftermath.... place is legit. To think we almost judged it by the outside appearance.

The salsa bowls are about 7" in diameter! Both were quite tasty. The chips were commercial, overly salted, and half crushed, not so good.

Some of the best tacos I've ever had. The last time I had tacos this good, I was in downtown Cancun.

This was the worst mexican restaurant i have visited. They charge for chips and salsa and the food was not good. Avoid if possible

It contrasted sharply with La Probadita in town, which has really fallen off, in that respect.

Walmart is only about 20 minutes away, but Cherry Hill blows them away! Try the breakfast sausage, it is the only kind we buy! But they have 3 employees collecting pay for nothing other than pointing people into the right queue for checkouts. I walked right past them. No way am I going to stand at self-check long enough to wait for the scanner to reset between items while I ring up 24 identical barcodes. The woman follows me into the queue, staring into my cart. "You could use the self-checks with fewer customers waiting." "You could open a register and use the quantity button and I'd be out of your way," I told her. Of course, she went back to staring at others who have the audacity to think someone paid by the store should scan and bag their items. I get my receipt and head to the door. 2 gatekeeers BOTH SITTING DOWN, neither is particularly close to the door. Neither has a cast, walker, cane... they are just sitting. So as I flip my receipt showing I checked out with a human and paid, to the one closer to the door, she says something about needing to see but I was already out the door because my hands/arms were full and it was clear neither of them felt the need to get off their seats. I would love to say this is a fluke. The truth is, this location has never been a good experience, since they first built it. The remodeling seems to be with the goal "we can make it even worse" and there are zero employees who care about the company. I usually go to Meijer, but, I got my annual dose of the Ludington WalMart and expect that will be enough for a long time.
