It's a great place to bring your lunch or sit on the grass and enjoy a good book. The play area was remodeled not long ago and is a great place for kids to play and run around. If you're into visiting historic homes like I am, the Neff Estate is a must visit. Tours are given every third Saturday of the month from 2-4 pm. Tours are free, donations accepted. The George House and Neff Barn are also on site, however they are not part of the tour. During La Mirada's Halloweenfest, the George House is open for viewing and the Neff Barn is turned into a haunted maze. There is a beautiful gazebo on site as well, perfect for special occasion photos.

It is also the place I took my senior dog Max on walks when his health declined and no longer was able to join me on our hikes. It is also the place my son thought for a quick photoshoot when we picked up his high school letterman jacket. So many more memories to consider but these are the ones that I will always hold dear to my heart. Thank you Santa Fe Springs for maintaining this beautiful, majestic landmark.

Very fun for kids to explore. Slides and climbing are built into the structures. Adjacent to neighborhoods so lots of street parking, as well as a separate parking lot. Playground equipment geared for the 3 to 12 year old kids. Lots of covered sheds and picnic tables- those are available for Cerritos residents to rent, but otherwise are free for use. Also has grills if you want to barbecue. Clean bathrooms, onsite toddler pre-K programs offered. Lots of well maintained grassy areas and shady trees.

La Mirada is the perfect place to ride to. There are plenty of bike lanes which makes it easy to share the road, plus the streets are paved to perfection, no pot holes here. Love art? La Mirada has a fantastic theater that shows spectacular plays like Peter Pan and Les Miserables. Outdoorsy? La Mirada has marvelous green-ways and parks to pass by. Hungry? There are a lot of 4 star dining places around the area to grub at! Want to be the summer heat? La Mirada has it's own Water park AND public pool! It is part of Los Angeles County, but is very close to Orange County. In fact, La Mirada is within an hour to so many attractions in Southern California. Awesome location. She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? And let's talk about the makeshift cemetery. Quirky? YES. Fun? Absolutely. Slightly spooky? Only if your imagination is over-caffeinated. All the items in this house were from the time era that it came from, so over a hundred years ago! The first thing that happened was someone's child coming in and banging on the antique piano...if you are bringing children, please remember to keep an eye on them! These pieces of history cannot be replaced. The tour consisted of the living room area, dining area, kitchen, children's and master bedroom, and room with relics long gone from Buena Park's history. For a free, short tour, it was definitely worth it to learn some neat history!

This review is on the Historic Dreger Clock…read more You may remember the 4-sided,15 ft.tall clock that was displayed at Knott's Berry Farm for 50 years (1953-2003). It first sat in the "Ghost Town" area of the park in the rose garden. I remember it was in front of the bakery. It was eventually moved out front near their ticket booths. Then, it disappeared. The "Dreger Clock" was built by Andrew Dreger Sr. from 1928 to 1933. It showed the time, date, moon phases and 12 international cities. When finished he placed it outside his home in Long Beach where he built his wood frame home that withstood the quake of 1933 when other brick buildings collapsed. For 20 years he kept the clock in working order. After his death, Walter Knott saved the clock where it was enjoyed by thousands of visitors to Buena Park. In 2003, it fell into disrepair and was removed and placed in a warehouse. In 2007, the clock was purchased by the Buena Park Historical Society and an extensive restoration effort began. After a complete disassembling, cleaning, paint and repair, a special designed stand post was set near the historic Whitaker-Jaynes House, built in 1887 and now a museum across from the Civic Center on Beach Blvd. This became the new home for the clock. The dedication event for the restoration was Oct.3, 2009. It's a beautiful sight to see today.
