I just ate there tonight and, I must admit, the customer service was detrimental to the business. The food was decent, but I felt the way I was treated by the Asian waitress drove this rating further to the left than it would have been if a local German waiter/waitress was serving me.
Oberammergau is known for the hospitality given by hosts and hostesses in their restaurants and hotels. However, by the way the Asian woman (their sole wait-staff tonight) acted the way she did tonight, I would suggest would-be visitors move on to a different eatery where they can be treated with relative respect.
I had been otherwise enjoying my lasagne with peas (the owner must be from Sicily, as you would never find peas in lasagne from Napoli or north of it). I politely asked for my check and a few minutes later she dropped the receipt on my table.
A few moments later, I took out my credit card and placed it on the receipt. Several minutes later, she swiftly passed by my table on her way to the kitchen and muttered the words, "We don't take credit cards," and continued on her way. I was shocked by her soulless remark. I looked over at the two young German ladies sitting next to me...their eyes and facial expression matching my mental reaction to the waitress' behavior.
Now, perhaps I expect more from waitstaff having spent years working in it but, when the staff needs to address types of payments they do or do not take, they should stop and face the customer, look them in the eye, and politely say, "I am sorry. We only only accept cash." (Euros, in this case).
But, no...she just swooped by with her abrupt words rejecting my form of payment and stormed toward the kitchen. Lucky for me I heard her and said, "OK, Euros it is." I paid the bill in Euros and left.
This restaurant should pay full Euro for a German waiter/waitress that is more in-tune to the locale personality. This Asian lady might be saving the owner some Euros on the payroll, but she will cost their bottom line over time with the way she treats the customers. read more
