We went to the location off San Jeronimo (two other spots are in the area near San Pedro and Parque Fundidora). Very hip, bougie ambiance. Service was superb. Felt very well attended to, not forgotten, and boxed up to-go like champs! Here's everything we got - Me: ceviche habanero as appetizer with cortadillo as main course. I loved the appetizer but felt the cortadillo was overpriced for the quantity. Her: queso fundido appetizer with ribeye with chile pique. We both liked the fundido but her steak was cooked closer to rare when she wanted medium well. There are LOTS of steakhouses like this in Monterrey. The menu here will look like many others around the city, but the steadiness of quality and service sets it apart. And though this location may not have the flashiest service or best view, it's my favorite in all other ways. It's easy to get in and out of, and there is good parking. Depending on which direction you come in from, you may need to turn left to go right. Be patient with the traffic, it's worth the wait! Make a reservation. Monterrey loves reservations. Though on many days you'll be able to get in just fine, it's better to know before you go, and La Nacional is no different. This is a top spot for business dinners, dates, and family celebrations, so it can be surprisingly busy, even during the week. Think center of the table service. Most dishes here are made to share. If you don't know what to order, ask. The waitstaff here are pros. They will guide you to the right amount of food for your group, and to some of the best options. If you have a smaller group, ask for a cut of meat served a couple of different ways. Consider vegetables as starters. Though this is steakhouse, the vegetables are well-prepared. Artichokes, yes. Beets, yes. Asparagus, yes. Try them all. Save plenty of room for the main event, meat. I recommend their specialty, rock-salt ribeye and if you've got the room for it, go for the grilled octopus. If you've got a large group, try everything. Pass it around and talk about everyone's favorites. La Nacional was recommended to me by locals that I was working with saying that's it's a must go to spot if you're in Monterrey and I have to concur! Everything was amazing! It was so good I went two times. First time I ordered the rib eye filet with bone marrow and garlic and it was perfect! The hey roast the garlic whole and squeeze it out at the table. The second time I had tuna ceviche that was super fresh and the portion size was big enough for sharing for multiple people. I ate all of it myself so I just ordered one taco after and it was the Coffin pig taco. It was delicious!. Crispy outside and tender inside. Also tried a special pechuga mezcal recommended by the waiter made with crushed bugs that changes the color to red and it was excellent as well. In Monterrey for business, arriving late on Sunday night, and luck would have it that my hotel was a mere block from Nacional. And they had the Sunday night football game on. Was able to secure a table in the bar, and proceeded to order up some "senoritas" tacos which were a fresh, almost crepe like flour tortilla stuffed with carne asada, beans snd cheese, then lightly char grilled. Delicious! Tried the grilled beet & avocado salad which was good, but I found it a bit too rich with the pistachio Mayo "dressing" that accompanied it. We absolutely loved it. We were supposed to go to La Catarina but they were full and so we ended up here on recommendation from a friend. Glad we did. Loved where we sat, very clean restaurant with great staff. We hardly knew any Spanish and the staff specially Ramires was so helpful. He translated everything for us and made it so smooth for us. When I think about a classic, classy Mexican dining room, I think of La Nacional as the quintessential Mexican experience. I have been to many hip, authentic, and classic places in Mexico City and Monterrey and hands down this place wins. The service is old school, something like the quality you would find in an old school American Steakhouse. Upon dining here, I had the best margarita I have ever had in my life, they perfectly mixed Grand Marnier and likely Herandura o Don Julio to perfection. Everything on the menu looked great. Excellent food with the sommelier coming around to suggest a great bother of wine. Steak was of very high quality and perfectly cooked. Went there for dinner and had the Rib-eye and the asparagus. The ribeye was cooked to perfection and it was a big portion(500g). The asparagus were also cooked well and tasted great, especially once I added the butter that comes on the side. * Disclaimer: this was one of the best meals I've ever had * ** Top 10 Global Elite ** Having been logging my culinary experiences via Yelp for some five years now, I've had some truly fantastic meals. Some of those fantastic meals have warranted five star reviews, but they're often so few and far between that I think "yeah, five stars is plenty". Every so often, however, a meal comes along that truly changes my perspective on food, and it's in those very rare moments that I think "man, I do wish that I could identify this establishment as something worthy of more than just five stars that are so commonly overgranted these days". Monterrey's "La Nacional" is one of those establishments, and it's where I had a truly perspective changing meal. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I'm fortunate enough to work in a very diverse office, and so I took the reactions from my Mexican co-workers very seriously when I told them I was going to Monterrey for business, which would include a business dinner. "La Nacional" was the first thing both of them said, and it turns out that was their gut reaction for very, very good reason. The atmosphere and service at La Nacional is top notch, and when I say top notch I mean it's very much akin to what you might find in the uppermost echelon of dining in the United States. A highly trained and attentive but not overbearing staff compliments a welcoming atmosphere with seating both indoors and out. For a non (or rather minimal) Spanish speaker like myself? No problem, as the staff were able to communicate just fine and make use of English menus. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Okay, so I was so caught up in the glory that was this meal that I forgot to log specific prices, and I can't find my itemized receipt nor prices online. However, know this - my party of six ordered the following. All of it: Appetizers: Roasted Artichoke Caesar Salad Guacamole and Rib eye fajitas (with fresh flour and corn tortillas) Mains: Two orders of the Salted Rib eye Grilled Fish Flank Steak Desserts: Two dishes of ice cream with caramel Molten Chocolate Cake with ice cream Non alcoholic beverages The grand total? $336 USD. Anywhere in the United States this would have very easily been $600 worth of food or more, but the prices were more than reasonable for such a high end restaurant. I do recall that the Salted Rib Eye, which is a full 2.2 pounds of meat, was $58. A bargain if ever there was one. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Like I said, this was absolutely perspective changing food. Do I normally like artichoke? I don't, but this appetizer (and the sauce!) was divine. It's no surprise they sell the sauce separately to take home if you wish. Do I love salad? I don't, but I could have eaten this salad with amazing croutons and honey mustard dressing all day long. The tortillas? Divine, both flour and corn. As for the Salted Rib Eye that I ordered as a shared main. My goodness gracious. As quality a cut of meat as you'll ever see cooked to absolute perfection with a sea salt that could make a piece of cardboard taste like Filet Mignon. Wonderful. By the end of it all I didn't think I could stomach even another bite, but the molten chocolate cake blew me away even though I'm often not a cake person. This entire meal was life changing. If you are going on a business trip to Monterrey, this is the place to take your clients/costumers/providers to eat. They have a little bit of everything regarding Northern food. The ribeye is mind blowing cooked to perfection, the fideos secos is the most delicious thing, the guacamole, queso fundido, asado de puerco, really any dish is amazing, rich in flavor and mouth watering.
