Montreal is a foodie's paradise as one day you can have British, another French, then Canadian and the next Italian and that was exactly what I did. Even in diverse Bay Area, finding an Italian restaurant that specializes in cuisine from Puglia is rare, so when I heard about La Panzeria from I knew I had to try. I originally was introduced to Puglia years ago because of its olives but learned about its love of burrata from a local global foodie friend from Puglia. Needless to say, burrata was definitely present in all our choices which were all Pugliese classics. Orecchiette Maison Avec pesto and burrata, panino polignano with octopus and burrata, and their focaccia barese with mortadella, pistachio, and burrata. Come hungry and prepare to load up on carbs the Italian way. Start with a round of their amazing focaccia. Beautifully crisp on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside, a tell tale sign of high hydration dough that has been dressed with olive oil and salt before baking. The goodness doesn't stop there. The focaccia is generously topped wy all kinds of flavor combinations. A heaping pile of thin sliced mortadella, a couple of balls of in house made fresh creamy burrata and a handful of pistachios all topped with a serious drizzle of outstanding, peppery Italian olive oil. Too boring? Take another round and top it with an equally large pile of mortadella, creamy, milky stracciatella and shaved black truffles. The aroma, hedonistic. The flavor combo simple and sublime with the creamy cheese and chunks of fat in the mortadella carrying the umami flavors to a super long finish. Yes there are pastas but over ordering on the focaccia put an end to the carby adventure. Tip: One focaccia is sufficient for four people as a starter. Very friendly, energetic Italian service. Came here for lunch, knowing I wanted their fried octopus sandwich and ultimately had a hard time narrowing down what I wanted to get. The best thing we had was the focaccia barese with figs, capocollo, spicy honey, burrata and evoo. This was divine. The focaccia was beautifully crusty yet light, milky and creamy from the burrata, fresh and sweet from the honey and figs, and a salty, nutty savoury flavour from the capocollo. We got the sandwich of the day which was a chicken cutlet sandwich with homemade marinated eggplants, burrata and arugula in a beautifully crusty yet fluffy and fresh ciabatta. Lastly, the Panino Polignano, octopus sandwich. Again, fresh bread was used and a generous amount of octopus tentacle, burrata and a cooked pickly rapini. There was a pretty good balance of acidity and richness but I wish there was a bit more crisp to the octopus and it was hotter. The space is very bright and clean with nice decor. They have a squid Sandwhich on their menu that we weren't brave enough to try but we still got food in abondanza. A wonderfully fresh foccacia topped with figs, prosciutto, luscious buratta and spicy honey, an incredible pasta dish with a tender braciola, an exquisite arancino bathing in a bowl of homemade sugo and, of course, a panzerotti, washed down with one of the best aperol spritz we've ever had was way more than we could eat... I had heard a lot about this local bakery and was excited to finally be able to check it out. We came here on a Sunday morning right when they opened and there was already a line (of course). The service: we were served by one of the owners and he is very chatty so make sure you are not in a rush when visiting! He is very nice and can recommend anything to you so don't be shy and ask! The food: I was especially excited to try the fresh foccacia. There are lots of variety and it was hard to choose just one. I ordered the mozzarella foccacia and the dough is so chewy yet crispy. I was also excited to see that the owner was preparing some fresh bomboloni and had to order some. They were filled with ricotta and chocolate chips and was amazing. For my 100th 'First' --- I definitely wanted to review something unique and special. I have been excited to try this Italian specialty shop located a half flight of stairs below street level for some time. I knew by the signage they specialized in the region of Puglia specifically. I was not disappointed by the selection of items from that region, but also other Italian dry goods like packaged Taralli dough rings, Chicche cookies and Settembrini fig biscuits. They also have a a selection of wines and olive oil from the region they (the family: two brothers and their Mother) are from. Now for the real highlight in my opinion; the in-house made fresh items like: Lasagna, Orecciette pasta and of course their namesake item Panzerias. It was late afternoon, so I simply tried their hand rolled Focaccia with tomatoes. It was crisp on the outside and just a light crunch on the outside, firm enough but not too firm middle (with a touch of richness) --- and of course classic Focaccia seasoning. It made for a perfect late afternoon snack. Not to mention they have a solid looking barista set up and stuffed Bomboloni made at a local bakery to go along side your Espresso or even Espressino (also from the Puglia region). A few side notes in no particular order: The fresh made daily items can and most likely will sell out, so time your visit. There is a 4 person maximum in the shop, which is a good and safe idea. Wow, what a hidden gem. We made out on a rainy weekend and took it home for lunch and dinner. Lunch was amazing, for a small window... I felt like I was in Italy. It felt that authentic. Everyone, young and old absolutely loved the food. The Focaccia was by far the best I have had outside of Italy. The details in the freshness, tomatoes and meat mixture was perfect. La Panzeria is absolutely spectacular. The owner and staff take such great care for all food and drink they make. And you can't get any fresher of high quality Italian products and food anywhere else. The Bari Ice Tea was so refreshing and the Mortadella and Burrata focaccia was honestly life changing.
