This large venue,…read morelocated in an attractive small square in the old town of La Geltrú, is popular late on (after 23h) with a young crowd (mostly teenagers and 20-somethings), but OK for a quiet drink earlier on. The exterior looks like a traditional Spanish house, and conceals an expansive interior with a long counter, a wooden floor, panelled walls, pictures and mirrors with a Guinness/Murphy's/Irish theme, and a large TV screen showing videos. There's an upstairs bar which they open during festivals when they're busy. The beers, as you might expect, include Guinness and Murphy's, alongside Heineken and a range of interesting international bottled beers, with Yuste beer from Andalucía the only (but worthy) Spanish representative. Prices (at EUR3.50 per bottle) are higher than average, but service is friendly and efficient.

La Cau means 'the den' or 'the burrow' in Catalan, and it's a fitting description, in that the small front bar area, with a narrow row of seating, leads onto a larger interior room behind with two TV screens and half a dozen tables. It's all done out in a clean modern décor with old photographs of Vilanova, with a painting of a brown bear above the words 'La Cau'. The toilets were particularly modern and spotlessly clean. They serve the usual range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic rinks, and there's a basic tapas menu, with a range of hot and cold sandwiches on offer; warm Spanish tortilla sandwiches (in a crusty baguette) were especially nice at EUR3. Beers are around EUR2 for a 33cl bottle.

It's a place to order several dishes and share, with items such as mixed plates of cheese and patés designed for this. A decent meal for two comes to about EUR15-25 a head, depending on your choices. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and service is reasonably efficient, even though they are often busy (once with a family party of 20!). There is a small number of outside tables in the small square outside, and they also sell a small number of craft food products including, rather surprisingly, several types of Scottish-made shortbread. As with all restaurants here, they seem very child-friendly we've watched several large family parties dine, with three or four generations present!

There are no tables, but a wide ledge with bar stools runs around the outside walls. Run by a friendly husband-and-wife team, it tends to get busier after 22.30h and attracts a slightly more mature crowd of mostly local regulars. There's a TV screen, mostly showing Spanish news and sport, but they also show music videos - classic pop and rock from the 1980s. Beers include the San Miguel range, with Guinness and Heineken on tap. They do nibbles (crisps, etc) but no other food. The whole bar is kept spotlessly clean, including the toilets, which are - quite literally - the cleanest I have ever seen in a bar or pub.

Service is friendly and laid-back, too! It's a popular place with a wide range of clientele, many of whom sit outside under the trees in the square in the summer. It's a popular place to eat, too, though we haven't sampled the fare. Beers are good value, at around EUR2 a bottle (33cl).
