I'm from Texas where we have high expectations of Mexican food. The food (and margaritas) is great! Highly recommended!!

Hey KC foodies, come check out our charming town, join a community bike ride, wander through local…read moreboutiques and vintage shops, grab a massage at the Elms, party with us at a festival, enjoy a local craft beer at DC, buy some wine at WS or take in a winery, and then fill your belly with best Mexican food, made with all the heart of someone's little abuela using a mortar and pestle. The word Molcajete is Spanish for mortar and pestle and comes from the Aztec word meaning seasoning and bowl, these are tools traditionally made from volcanic rock. If you ask me, we've had a difficult time retaining restaurants in town but the really quality places stay, and leave an impression. Molcajete is one that people will come to Excelsior for, and hopefully enjoy our charming town in the process. This is more than just a new great restaurant, I'd like to think it's about joining the ranks of a few stand out establishments that are setting the tone for what Excelsior Springs is becoming, a destination for food, culture and tourism. Thank you for coming to Excelsior Springs!! This is one of the very best restaurants in this town! The salsa is better then most I've had in KC and I grew up in New Mexico. The food is fresh and delicious. It's better than any Mexican I've had recently and we always drive to Kearney for it. The people are NICE, the food is authentic, and please come give them try, it'll be your new favorite. Menu highlights: Taquiza- 4 street style tacos w chicken, steak, carnitas and chorizo. Tacos al pastor- 3 marinated pork tacos, this is some of the best al pastor around! Tacos de carne asada- 3 grilled chicken or steak tacos. All of the above LOADED w meat, cilantro and onions with tomatillo sauce on the side that's not for the common gringo. (You got this) Tacos Mexicanos under specialties, this is our favorite, loaded w steak and chorizo, cilantro and onions, I've not found a better street taco anywhere! Choripollo is the bomb with chirizo and chicken breast smothered in cheese with rice and beans. Another go to in my family. A friend of ours swears by the Molcajete Acapulco and de la abuela, it's fun to order and comes in the traditional molcajete bowl!

SALSA IS BLAND, CHIPS TASTED LIKE THEY WERE FRIED IN OLD OIL....EL PASTOR BURRITO HAD LOTS OF FAT…read moreIN IT, ..only 3 little pieces of pineapple in it, but lots of black beans and rice.....meat was satisfactory.....I was there to eat when they first opened & wasn't impressed, but since it's been a few years, thought I would try it again.....I love El Pastor, so was glad to see the new item on the menu, but, unfortunately, it was subpar.....will NOT be returning!!!!
