Stopped here on a whim while passing through. Glad we did. We asked the waiter what was good and he said everything is good. I ordered the Carnitas. Very tender, crisped just right. Refried beans, Spanish rice, guacamole, and pico were all ample portions and very good. The other meal we ordered was a shrimp chimichanga, which was also very good. This place deserves 4.5 stars and since I had to choose between four stars and five, I wasn't going to penalize them. read more

It's "fine." Possibly the best Mexican food in the middle-of-nowhere Missouri. (Take that as a compliment or as an indictment; your choice.) I've been too long from my home in Mexico and I was craving something with a little flavor. Instead, what I got was a little disappointment. The food was bland and moderately overpriced. The chips and salsa weren't too bad. I ordered the Nachos Grande because it's an opportunity for the kitchen to showcase their queso, pollo, carne, and seasonings. What I got was a soggy, soupy, bland, goopy mess. Under a mountain of shredded lettuce was a pile of chips soggy from floating in a pond of "from-a-can" queso sauce. There was some chicken and some beef but if one were blindfolded one could not tell which was which from taste alone. Service was OK, if not a little slow. And I'm adding a star for having "authentic" Mexican food in the middle of nowhere (all of the waitstaff spoke Spanish, so, um, "authentic"). But really this is a two-star experience in terms of flavor, texture, atmosphere, service, and overall value. read more

Nice place, clean and seating was comfy. Food was okay, if we were driving through again I wouldn't seek this place out to eat. Food was bland to me, got a combo plate with an enchilada, burrito and chile relleno. Passing through on a road trip, we saw the good reviews and decided to give El Patrón a try, sure beat McDonalds across the street. The food was honestly what I expected for a small rural town: kind of bland, not a lot of spice - but it still tasted alright. If you're a big fan of food in general this is THE place. I was with a trucker buddy of mine and man you can't explain the flavors. I've been to some famous restaurants like Jess and Jim's or Toot Toots. But this place smacks both of them on the back of the head and tells them to sit on down. Really, more like 2.5 Stars. Has the potential of being pretty decent. It's like they're cutting Corners in ways that are most unfortunate. It's what you would expect from a bunch of Gringo Farmers that have never had decent Mexican food. Perhaps that's just the local clientele they are trying to appeal to. Pros: big menu, respectable salsa. Genuinely hot hot sauce. Lots of cheese! Reasonably decent ground beef dishes. Cons: pricey for what you get. Largely Bland seasoning. Salad was literally shredded lettuce from a bag, not a salad. Chile relleno was bitter! With very little batter on the outside. Very good for a rural Mexican restaurant. I would not have expected to get food this authentic in the middle of Missouri. If I remember correctly, I had a (chicken?) quesadilla. I left feeling full and satisfied. I gotta bump this up a smidge. This was our 3rd visit. It's cold outside and we still hiked up the little hill for dinner. The margarita was still decent. The chips and salsa still the same, but since we learned the secret of putting the Chili Habanero hot sauce that's on the table in it, it becomes perfect. My husband ordered the chicken chimichanga and said it was pretty darn good. I had the Quesadilla Fajita. Oh. My. Goodness. I have ordered something different everytime and this is by far my favorite. The veggies had a nice caramelized char that brought out so much flavor! Their guac is delicious! The rice was nice and fluffy and after I dressed it with some of the salsa, it was very tasty. The service was pretty average...he didn't hover, I'll just say that. I found this place completely by accident. I was traveling on I-70 and feeling hungry so I hopped off at the exit. Actually I was craving BBQ but this orange building caught my eye. The parking lot had quite a few cars in it and when I got close I saw that it was a Mexican restaurant. I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try. I was really glad I did. I had the lunch Fajitas and they were exceptional. Too bad it was during the middle of the day because I would have loved to have tried their margaritas. The best Mexican restaurant we have ever been to. My wife and I are from southern ca so we've been to countless Mexican restaurants and this place beats every single one of them. We are truck drivers so we parked at the TA and it was only a 3 min walk from the lot which was convenient. The inside was very clean and the staff was super fast and very friendly. Just for a recommendation when you get your chips and salsa add some of the green habanero sauce in there. As far as food if you like steak and shrimp order the JALISCO STEAK. Don't skip stopping at this spot! We started with queso, chips and salsa - all of which were on our table with our drinks within about 1.5 minutes of arriving. What felt like 3 minutes later or less, our chicken fajitas and quesadilla fajita landed in front of us. My only complaint? First of all, service is top notch, here! Our waitress couldn't have been better. The salsa is weird. I think they put oregano in it. I liked it, but it was unexpected. Chips were warm and fresh. My lunch mate got 3 delicious meat tacos and some refried beans. The tacos were amazing, and he ate the beans enthusiastically. I had the enchiladas verdes. The chicken was tender and juicy. The tortillas were fresh, and the verde sauce was tart and delicious. They gave me ample guac/pico/sour cream and garnished the enchiladas with a generous amount of cilantro. The rice was pretty standard, but standards are pretty high around here! Their portions are pretty generous. All in all, one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. Best thing about our visit was our incredibly timed low-pressure yet attentive waitress. Great waitresses are rare, but they certainly have one at El Patrón! read more

I have eaten here more than 50 times. I love everything I've had except the fajitas and the Tuesday night $1 tacos. Had those twice and both times they lacked sufficient seasoning. Some of their best dishes and my favorites are Pollo Cancun, Pollo Michoacano, Rafa Special, Steak Jalisco, Tacos de Carne Asada, Gordo Special and I love the grilled jalapeno slices. Their margaritas are inexpensive at $5.50 for a jumbo and delicious. I highly recommend you stop in and have a meal and a margarita. They have a wonderful staff. Maybe I'll see you there! read more

So happy that we stopped here. From start to finish...excellent! Christian was on point and didn't hover which set the atmosphere for a very relaxing meal. He brought out chips and a small carafe of salsa and we ordered our tea. He gave us a few extra minutes which was appreciated because they have a good selection. I couldn't make up my mind, so I ordered the "Little Bit of Everything"... my husband ordered the Chimichanga meal. The portions and prices were just right, not ourageous....26.20 for 2 drinks and our 2 entrees (not lunchtime).
