My sister-in-law who lives in Stittsville brought over a cake and some pastries/baked goods from La Provence, and most were excellent, but some were just ok and one item was dry and tasted stale. I've driven by the place many times, but have never gone in, so my review is just based on my sampling of the items given to me by my lovely sister-in-law.
She brought a mango mousse cake, a carrot cupcake, a mille-feuille, a flan, and a pastry that I initially thought was an éclair, but was actually a spongy cookie sandwich (there might be a name for it, I don't know).
The spongy cookie sandwich was delicious! The cookie tasted like a mix of a French macaron, an Italian amaretti cookie and sponge cake. It sandwiched this delicious chocolate cream and the ends were dipped in chocolate and there was chocolate drizzle all over the cookie sandwich. Very tasty. I would definitely buy this.
The mille-feuille was equally delicious. Flaky layers with rich whipped cream and smooth custard, so good. The icing/glazing on top was not overly sweet. I would buy this too.
The carrot cupcake was a dud in my opinion. It tasted dry and stale to me :(
The flan was ok. It was rich, creamy and eggy. The syrup at the bottom had an intense burnt caramel taste.
The mango mousse cake looked absolutely beautiful. It had a mango flavour to it, but tasted a tad artificial to me.
So it's a bit hit or miss, but I will be visiting the bakery in the future to get some mille-feuille and that spongy cookie sandwich thing! read more
