Bliss Texas, my family said Julio's Cafe Corona was a must. I don't complain and am easy going so off we went. We came for lunch and the restaurant wasn't packed. No wait and that meant we were immediately seated. I'm a tortilla soup addict and so I had to try. It was just okay, it did not have chicken, which it should have. My family insisted I don't eat (Yelp knows I do) so they forced me to get a plate. I chose the lunch flautas. It came with guacamole and refried beans. They were delicious! I'm not big refried bean person but the Tex-Mex beans always seem to be delicious. I've learned some restaurants add bacon to their recipes and it makes sense, of course I love them. I'm a pork lover! These were just okay and didn't appear to have that hint of flavor. I didn't eat them. I noticed that they don't serve rice, probably better for my waistline but in comparison to other Tex-Mex spots, you do get both rice and beans. Ambiance is typical of a Mexican Cantina. Would I return? If I lived in the EP, possibly, but if I'm returning and just have a few days this wouldn't be my go-to spot. Good but not the best in the city.

You see, my only experience with Mexican cuisine is the Mexican restaurants in Kentucky and Tennessee. I'm told it's authentic but how do I know? I have nothing to reference it to. This time around, I researched which restaurants were recommended in El Paso. There's a laundry list of them, so I had to filter it based on where I was staying. Carlos and Mickey's popped up and off I went. Full disclaimer, I felt stupid ordering. I explained to my waitress about the stuff I eat at Mexican restaurants back in Tennessee. She flat out said we don't have that. Here I was, some out-of-state guy, spouting off dishes I thought were authentic! She did however give me some recommendations. I ended up with a beef, chicken, and crab enchilada trio with half house chile con queso sauce and spicy red sauce. I also ordered a cheese chile relleno, since that's one of my favorite dishes. For my drink, I ended up trying both of the aguas frescas (Jamaica and Horchata) with free refills! First the chips and salsa. I love how they give me whole tostadas as my chips. Those circular shapes are perfect for scooping up all the salsa in the bowl. The salsa was flavorful with a medium heat. The chile relleno was fantastic. The right amount of melty cheese and sauce but what I especially loved was that the pepper was cooked to that perfect balance of tenderness. You see I love chile rellenos but they are always overcooked on my side of the country. So the pepper itself is super soft and almost mushy. For my enchiladas, they were served with Spanish rice (not Mexican) and refried beans. I really loved the Spanish rice. It was light and earthly with firmness (not super fluffy). The refried beans were also light yet smooth. I like how the food isn't heavy. Like, the Mexican food I've had all my life were rich and heavy, sometimes almost too greasy. Not here and I loved it. My enchiladas were great. The chile con queso was a welcome change, giving it a twist on standard queso with that lightness I was talking about (not heavy). The spicy red sauce was smoky and had a good amount of heat. My crab enchilada was alright. I don't think it was real crab, but rather imitation. I mean I do like imitation crab too, so it wasn't a disappointment. The chicken enchilada was great. The chicken tasted like pulled rotisserie chicken. Whether that was how it was really cooked, I don't know but it was really good. The star however was the beef enchilada. My gosh I could just eat that flavorful, juicy, shredded beef filling in a bowl by itself. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Last but not least are the aguas frescas. The Jamaica, I don't even know what's in it because I've never really tried them before but it was sweet, tart, and floral. Almost like cranberries and flowers. I downed that within minutes. Since the refills were free, I asked to try the Horchata. Lightly creamy, cinnamon-y, with vanilla, and a balanced sweetness. I fully recommend this place. There was so much food AND it was very affordable. All that was just shy of $21. I left stuffed. I felt good that the majority of the patrons here were Hispanic because if the locals are eating here, you know it has to be good. Until now. I had placed an order for some food for me to pick up to take home. I ordered 2 caldo de res, large size, One plate of Tacos con carne deshebrada, a plate of chicken enchiladas in green sauce, and a plate of chicken tacos. I pick it up on the way home. I got home and opened up the containers of food with my wife and we were very surprised to find that the food in the 3 plates were burnt. I am not talking about overcooked they were burnt to a black crisp. The tortillas in the Taco plates were burnt Black and the meat inside was extremely dry like jerky. The sauce on the enchiladas was almost nonexistent and a tortillas on the enchiladas ends were also burnt Black. The chicken in the inside was also very, very dry. The rice on all the plates did not look like rice it resembled more like seeds that you might plant outside. The beans are so dry that they had pulled away from the edges of the container and were a brown hard lump. Needless to say none of the food was appealing nor edible. I was quite surprised because this had never happened to us at this particular restaurant. It was late in the evening when I called them up. None of the managers were in at that moment. The cashier told me that one of the managers name was as Junior. I explained to the cashier what happened with my food order and she assured me she would get the message to one of the managers. I gave her my phone number. The next morning I received a call from a lady who said that she was one of the managers and wife of Junior, the other manager. I asked for Junior and the lady said that she could help me. She told me that Junior was there with her. I spoke with Her and describe the food that I had received and she apologized immensely. She said that she would like to remake the order for me. I said that would be great if you could do that and we would appreciate it. She asked me to come on in, I told her that that particular day I was not able to as I already had plans. She said not to worry that she would leave my name and instructions about my order with the cashier. Just to call first, come in and it would be taken care of. The following week I was able to call that Friday to let them know before I got there and the cashier said she did not know anything about what I was talking about. I explained to her the entire situation and she said that she was sorry that she still didn't know what what's going on. I asked if I could speak to the manager and she told me the manager was not in. I asked to speak to any of the two managers and she told me that none of them are in. I left a message with the cashier to give to Junior or his wife and that I would appreciate a call back. She said that she would be sure to give the message to them. The following week I did not receive a return call so I called them that Thursday. Again they were not in. Again I left a message, asking them to please call me back.(I think you can see where this went). I've been coming to this restaurant for over eight years and apparently that's not loyalty enough for them. I did explain this to the managers. The food has always been rather decent and sometimes good here . This time not at all. The management failed to follow up with me. I feel they could have at least returned my calls, they certainly had plenty of opportunities. They did not and to date I have not. In any business it is easier to keep your current and regular customers than to try to get new customers. That doesn't seem to be an important issue for them nor is it their current agenda. What I feel is more important is they have lost the patronage of a regular customer, myself. Unfortunately I will not be recommending this business any longer.
