Maria, the restaurant's name sake, and possibly daughter greeted us upon entrance and gave us a comfortable table near the kitchen. The table had a few appetizers presented skinned boiled potatoes in olive oil, miniature sliced lengthwise squash in olive oil and oregano, and freshly baked country style bread with fresh tomatoes and olive oil. While plenty of wines were on the menu, we had the house Tuscan red and followed appetizers with fettuccine in a buttery mushroom sauce and large ricotta, spinach filled ravioli in a tomato sauce. Pastas were freshly made egg/flour based and delicious. With a little room left for dessert we split a creamy tort with mix of fresh berries and an espresso. The environment was family/friend style with white tabled cloths and nice cuttery/plates in a large open space with local and family items as decoration. I would return!

The pasta was plated nicely with a bit of shredded chicken in the sauce. Arrostocini lacked flavor and the meat was cut way too small. I make lamb skewers often and I cut the pieces much bigger. It was not enough to call it a main course.

I came here with relatives that live locally. We went for the pasta alla chitarra and the…read morearrosticini. Both were excellent! If your not from the area, I will explain and post pictures of what they are. Arrosticini is lamb meet on a skewer. It is a specialty of Abruzzo and severed all over. You can buy them premade or make your own. If you buy them they are usually made by machine so they are all uniform in size. They are small, so you typically eat several of them, not just a few. Figure on 5-8 a person. There is a special metal brazier or charcoal cooker for them and they are made of the exact size to fit on that without burning at the ends and falling in. The cooker a long rectangular box is called a canala as it looks like a gutter. So if you make them yourself you better be measuring. The meat is seasoned and they are quite tasty! You usually pay for them by the singular and can order as many as you want. Suggestion: Order a small order and eat them warm. Then order again for more. If you order a lot at once they can get cold as they are rather thin. So by making several orders they stay fresh and you can see how people like them. They are often an appetizer due to their size. As for pasta alla chitarra, that is a pasta which is cut on a wood box with strings like guitar strings. It sounds like a guitar if you run your fingers over it. Most have two sides and one is thinner and one is thicker depending on your preference. You roll out the dough, then place it on the box, and then roll over it with the roller and push the dough through. It is string cut and falls below, then hang it to dry. They use a bit of hot red pepper in the sauce here so that adds a nice kick to it and makes it much more tasty! You can buy chitarra pasta just like any pasta from a factory but honestly it doesnt taste as good. To me it looks more like any other pasta after you boil it. However there may be better brands out there. This restaurant has very good chitarra pasta and arrosticini, so you can sample both of them here.

The restaurant offers typical Abruzzese cuisine and based on our experience, they nailed it. I rarely order gnocchi in restaurants after having gotten accustomed to my father-in-law's gnocchi. It is one of the most difficult homemade pasta dishes to make correctly, imo. The gnocchi with a lamb sauce was as good as nonno's. The agnello alla brace for a secondi was a solid selection. The region is known for lamb and Il Canestro's was consistent with that standard of quality. Will add this place to our list of area favorites...

Our mains were on the small side but totally delicious! We had a bottle of red for €12 and the bill came to €67! I would recommend Gino's! We found this restaurant while cruising through Teramo in Bisenti, thanks to the many well-placed…read moresigns. It's located in a red building, a few kilometers from the center of Bisenti and well worth the drive. There is a wonderful lady who doesn't speak English but happily seats you and helps you get the best food in town. Their menu changes daily based on what's available. The first day we came we had a choice of gnocchi in red or white sauce or fettuccine (for pasta only, which we wanted). We ordered the gnocchi and were so happy we did. The dish is served with fresh grated parmesan and spicy small chiles in olive oil. We also asked for bread and vino rosso (house red wine). The wine was smooth and light and perfect with the gnocchi, which felt like little clouds of heavenly pasta in our mouths. We returned the next day and were offered chitarra--the speciality of Abruzzo which was pasta originally cut with guitar strings and served in a tomato sauce with ground meat. It was also divine. Tomorrow we are going back again. We asked what will be on the menu and the lady told us it is ravioli pomodoro, fettuccini bianco and fungi with truffles. We will have one of everything, because the food is spectacular.
