This place was just the right place at the right time. If you're looking around western Provence this is as good as any to base in. Avoid bigger cities, go for towns like St. Remy. There are basically two roads that lead to this place, the main road and what they call the "shortcut." The ended up taking taking the "shortcut" in, which was unlit. After spending some time in St Remy, we have discovered that it is actually easier to get in and out of this place versus some other hotels located inside St Remy. It was a short and pleasant drive to the city. While some people choose to walk - please don't! It is really a five minute drive and the road is not meant for pedestrians. The hotel was lovely. We got a room with outdoor access from our room. That was a very convenient feature, we were able to come and go as we please without going through the lobby. 5 Stars for the garden and the grounds 4 Stars for the Room itself, but they were very thoughtful since they can't really update such an old building. Wine glasses and opener were provided in the room in case you needed. The bathroom was huge, it was almost as big as the bedroom itself. It had a towel warmer. I really liked the bathtub, but the separate shower area was weird. The staff was friendly. The receptionist on our first night took the liberty to put together a list of restaurants for us to try. I think it was a good choice to stay. Overall it was a good experience.

Everyone speaks English to varying degrees but also working knowledge of Italian and German. The have 37 rooms for singles, doubles, triples and family rooms for 4 persons. Singles are 119 Euro and doubles are 119-179 (with terrace) Euro. No lift, but all rooms are on 2 floors. Very nice buffet breakfast. They provide a 1 liter glass bottle you can get still or sparkling water upon request. The hotel is very close to the Roman Arena, where bullfights occur now and the Theatre Antique, a Roman amphitheater now used for multiple events including concerts. The have a takeaway cafeteria (le Comptoir) with Movenpick gelato, pastries, friut, coffee drinks. Several good bistros and restaurants are literally across the rue Laure or just down the street. It's located halfway between the Roman ampitheatre and the Roman theatre in Arles -- ideal location! The room we were in (4) had a balcony that overlooked the Roman theatre -- it's appears to be the only room with a balcony. Given the quaint, 19th century look and feel of the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by the interior of the room -- air conditioning, modern lighting with switches by the bed to control the room lights, USB charging ports each side of the bed, strong wifi signal, large tub, modern shower and toilet, plenty of hot water, comfortable bed -- it was on a par with most modern hotels in terms of amenities and comfort. There's a 24-hour cafe in the lobby and the night manager is happy to serve you food and drinks any hour of the night. Breakfast is an extra charge and consists of cold cuts, cheese, various breads, fresh orange juice (that you prepare yourself on an electric squeezer), tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Alternatively, you can forego the breakfast fee and buy what you want from the lobby cafe. The staff were all cheerful, courteous, and helpful. Most spoke passable English so there was never any problem with communication. Some caveats -- there is no long-term parking at the hotel -- we had to unload our luggage near the hotel front door, then go park the car at a city parking garage nearby. It's only about 5 minutes away, so no big deal -- it's just a little inconvenient if you need to access your car while staying in the hotel. Luckily, just about everything worth seeing in Arles is walking distance from the hotel. Also, there's no elevator and the stairways are a little narrow, so pack light and small if possible. A pleasant bonus is that guests get to use the "spa" which is fashioned like a modern rendition of a Roman bath -- a large tub about 5 feet deep that's about 15 feet square filled with water at 90°F with a sitting area that has air bubbles. There's also a steam room, shower, and lounge area with tea and coffee facilities. Guests must make a booking to use it and there's a limit of 12 people at a time. So be sure to pack your swimsuit, even in winter. Bottom line -- Hotel Le Calendal is a superb place to have as your base when sightseeing in Arles.

If you are looking for an Intercontinental or Hilton, look elseware. Staff is great, making you feel welcome. Beautiful old-world lobby with great decor and beamed ceilings. Rooms are basic with high ceilings, but have everything you may need. Airconditioning worked very well. Plenty of hot water and good shower. Its a great value for the price. We had 2 rooms and we definitely recommend this hotel.

The place is, quite frankly, a dump. It was easily the worst hotel that I stayed in during my two-week trip to France. For one thing, there's no parking at the hotel and it's very difficult to get to. You have to park in a parking garage that's about a ten-minute walk away, then drag your bags up winding streets that climb higher up the hill until you finally reach the hotel. Then the ultimate disappointment: no elevator. We had to drag our bags up three flights of narrow stairs. By the time we got to the room, we were sweaty and exhausted. Then, there's the room itself. It was mostly brown, clearly old and worn, with a brown carpet and dusty corners. The cheap, thin towels had mysterious yellow stains on them. The wifi didn't work, and the whole place just felt run-down. And then our breakfast. We went to the breakfast room and had to wait ten minutes before anyone helped us. When they finally did, they brought a disappointing assortment of mediocre food. There was no choice whatsoever about what we were served, and none of it was very good. I'm definitely never coming back to this hotel, and I may even write to Lonely Planet to complain that they recommended it. It was so disappointing and the real lowlight of our trip.

We love the high ceiling in our room, and it was nice to experience living in a old French building without being completely modernized. The location of this hotel is just unbeatable. 2 mins walk to the train station, and also the colosseum. The front desk person was so nice to recommend restaurants for us, because of him, we got to taste the best veal steak in our lives. I recommend this hotel if you plan to visit Nîmes, which I recommend too!

The Accommodations The cottages are refurbished buildings from the days of the old mill. Beautifully decorated by Gaby. They cottages are very clean and fell like a home. I feel we get the full French Experience of living a very leisurely life here at Moulin de la Roque. Guy and Gaby, along with Robin, Ashley and Mateo create the most comfortable atmosphere and accommodations. They are located in a 100 years old plus mill but the flats and villas are well appointed and extremely comfortable. The de la Roque also has it's own expansive open space and large pool to shake off the hot late summer days of Provence. Again, as good as the accommodations are, it's the fantastic and caring folks that own and operate Moulin de la Roque that make the best vacation spot for any price. I have just had easily the greatest vacation I have ever had, and it's due primarily to staying at this outstanding location.

Getting into shower stall was a bit tight, although it's nicely decorated. Breakfast buffet didn't look appetizing so we skipped it. And they don't have a freezer so there was no ice available.

They serve a typical French hotel breakfast, assorted pastries, cereal, juice,coffee/tea, with ham and salami slices also. The restaurant was only open for breakfast and I never saw the bar open. Perhaps the bar is used when a conference is being held at the hotel? Staff was helpful and friendly. They do have a fairly large pool and conference rooms available. I didn't use either of them so I can't comment further than that. The hotel was undergoing some renovations while I was here (September 2016). Some mornings you could hear the workers on different floors if they were doing drilling etc. All in all a good value. I get the feeling that Adonis took over this hotel from another company given the renovations and how few people were staying there. I would stay there again particularly if I had a car as any hotel in the city center is almost impossible to find parking nearby.

This hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk from the city center (depending on how fast you walk), but it still has a good location to a supermarket and other shops. I've stayed in a B&B Hotel in Paris so I was familiar with the style and layout of this hotel. Speaking French is a plus, but they have a limited knowledge of English and some other languages. They assign individual codes to open up the door to the room, so don't lose that piece of paper! The rooms are small (normal for European standards), but comfortable. The bed was small, but since I'm a small person, it didn't bother me. Breakfast offered cereal, juices, yogurt, jams, nutella, croissant, tea, coffee. I helped myself to a croissant and some nutella and tea. The hotel was clean and a nice place to stay in Nimes.
