Lala's - Spanish fritata with 3 salads and fresh lemonade on the roof terrace

BETTER THAN A STANDARD CAFE…read more I've been here a few times with friends to study (and get lunch/drinks). It's quite nice. You can sit inside, outside on the street or upstairs on the rooftop terrace. Staff are usually very friendly. This place has a gluten-free cake on offer and a good menu with choice for vegetarians for a change. The iced coffee is amazing as is the home-made veggie burger. They also have good breakfasts that are served until 12. Yum.

At first glance, Lala's may look like just another cafe serving up your average sandwich and jacket…read morepotato themed fare. But step inside and feast your eyes at the daily specials scrawled on a black board wall behind the counter, and you'll soon realise that Lala's Cafe is really something special. Minute steak with Cafe de Paris butter, sardines and fried squid all made an appearance this weekend... Reasonably priced and serving food throughout the day, Lala's is a great choice for those looking for a quick coffee, leisurely meal with friends or even a full blown party (although I haven't seen it for myself I hear there is a roof terrace upstairs, plus ample seating on the street for sunnier days). Having made three visits in three weekends, I can highly recommend the sandwiches, salad plates and pancakes. All freshly prepared, the servings are exceedingly generous - I've never left hungry!

And vegetarian pubs are few and far between, even in fair Brighton... Sadly, I'm not sure the George has quite cracked it...the dishes sound good, and in fairness the nachos I had there recently were quite tasty, but nachos are hardly the height of veggie culinary cuisine, are they? What's weird about this place is that they always seem to run out of stuff! I just don't get it. I am REALLY not a fan of being told that there is an ingredient missing as my food is delivered to me...at least have the decency to inform me in good time, so that I can change my order! If I order a burger that involves cheese, please include the cheese! Although I probably won't eat at the George again in a hurry, I would go for drinks- the staff are friendly and they have a lovely little garden with flower adorned trellises. It is a pub perhaps best saved for after-dinner drinks.

It's a shame because The George is a cracking little pub with a sweet beer garden and a warm and homely atmosphere. Up until the plastic incident I used to go on a regular basis and sampled everything from the hallumi salad to the roast dinner. The staff were always laidback, the atmosphere was bustling and the portions were filling. I'd still go there for a drink but I don't think I could put one of their forks back in my mouth. :-)

This is going to be a review in progress as I inevitably dine again and again at Abyssinia…read more The interior is plain, filled with hanging pictures depicting religious scenes in the Tewahedo and Coptic traditions. There aren't many seats and the lighting is not going to impress anyone, but that isn't necessarily the point of Ethiopian food. This is where you go either to try something new or pig out with people close to you (it will probably get messy!) Everything you order is served on injera, a sourdough flatbread made from teff flour. Weirdly enough, if you've been to franco manca, you may notice some similarities in terms of dough. Like franco manca, you can also eat preposterous amounts of food with injera before keeling over, particularly compared to doughs that prove for ages. The traditional dishes of this cuisine are spicy, and abyssinia doesn't pull any punches. This is up there with the best ethiopian I had growing up in the D.C. area. You have a mix of stew dishes (wot), lean meat, and delicious vegetables. The vegetarian selection is 13.00 quid and is a big portion. The main reason not to miss out is the pairing. The spice of kitfo can get overwhelming, but with recourse to sweet lentils and tender carrots, your sweaty struggle will lead you to transcendence. The biggest limiting factor here is how many people you bring! To try a sizeable portion of the menu (you must get one variety of tibs, alicha wot, and a kitfo!) you really need 3 people. 2 can probably work if you are ravenous. Over three visits, not a single dish has failed to impress. Freshly ground spices and really powerful flavours. For three people, you can pig out for about 11 pounds a head. Plus it's BYOB. So go!
