I'm from California & live in Toronto, Canada - you can tell Californians because when we live other places we whine about not getting a good burrito. Yes, but I'm in Chester - I wasn't expecting anything or trying to emulate 'home' - we were just walking by & a bit hungry so we popped in thinking it'd be kitschy & cool. Wow. Srsly. The food is a mixture of cuban, spanish, mexican, brazilian, etc. I had a burrito. I would actually rate the burrito a bit better than most of what passes in Toronto. The service was awesome, even tho I hadnn't quite tuned my 'English' ears yet (was needing translation). However the margarita was world-freakin-class. I was expecting some sort of margarita mix/tequila mixture, but it honestly tasted like fresh lime and tequila - like an authentic margarita. It - was- awesome. I doubt I'll have many chances to visit Chester again, but if I do, I'm totally hunting down this place. For expats who might be in the area: check this out for your burrito fix! They all come in fancy glasses so you can do your best Del-Boy impression with the parasols and cherries! They are not cheap though at £5+ for some, so perhaps a place to visit for one round only. There is also a dance-floor in the centre of a good size, which I'm sure was packed later in the evening. Fiesta Havana also does food too, but although we enquired the wait time was too long, by virtue of its popularity. The dishes that came past us looked tasty and were predominantly tapas.

Eating goat's cheese brings me as much joy as sniffing Big Billy Goat Gruff after he's been in the gym, something I first discovered in the restaurant that's so good they named it twice, Tapas Tapas. A combination of agreeable staff and out-of-the-way location make this the ideal place to get gradually sozzled on wine and bask in the warm wooden coziness and brick-walled splendour of a restaurant with enormous amounts of quiet humility. Arriving fairly late, we made it just in time for last orders of food. I tried the king prawns a la plancha (grilled on a metal plate), chicken wings pimenton and the patatas bravas. All of which were nothing short of cooked to perfection divine. The only downside to this place is it's only around 50 covers. But as I've mentioned before it wouldn't be as intimate a venue if it was any bigger. I'm gonna be honest and say I am definitely coming back here again and again everytime I'm in Chester. Having spoken to the staff at the end I was also told the proprieters are thinking of opening a Porta. I for one cannot wait.

There is a main menu and then a lunch menu, where you choose two dishes plus a drink for £12.50 which is a really good deal. I ordered the patatas bravas and soft shell crab with a glass of red wine. The patatas bravas are average when comparing to what I have had in Spain, they were tasty though, just nothing mind blowing. The batter on the crab was really good and the accompanying guacamole was tasty too. My friend ordered three dishes from the main menu: cheese and onion ravioli type thing, a pancake thing with cabbage, spices and other veg and, the absolute star of the menu, the hangar steak. The steak was served sliced with beans, sweetcorn and a sauce. Judging by the taste, i think it was marinated in balsamic vinegar, which I've never tasted but it must have done something right as the meat was so tasty and so tender. I could have eaten this all day long. I definitely recommend that anyone coming here should try this dish. The red wine was nothing to write home about but pleasant and drinkable all the same. My friend seemed to enjoy here white wine. After a couple of hours, we were moved to the conservatory at the back of the restaurant as someone had booked the table in the window. The conservatory was spacious and perfect for cold, sunny weather. For two large, & two small glasses of each wine and the five dishes, we paid £65. Good value we thought. The service is good, the staff friendly, there's a nice atmosphere and, most importantly, the food is good. Definitely recommend going outside of the city centre in Chester and venturing to Hoole to try this place.

The menu is split into different sections of: Little bits Little plates Little sides Little lunch We ordered from the Little bits and Little plates section and they were fairly similar in size. We had the Artisan bread and the Crispy Squid from the Little bits section. From the Little Plates we got the: Chicken kiev Tempura cod cheeks Lamb rump Crispy Belly Pork - we ordered 2 of these and good job! All the dishes were really good. Some delicious. In particular the cod cheeks and belly pork. The lamb was tasty and tender. The only thing which was not at least really good was the chicken kiev - it was OK, just not really good.
