Antonio was happy to keep me entertained and I stumbled across some live musicians in the nearby sq. Upon my return I was promptly seated and given the menus (written in Italian and English). I started with the Mussels Marinara and was not disappointed. A generous portion and delicious flavour. The sauce is not tomato based, white wine, perhaps? I also went for the seafood linguine. WOW. Easily the best I have ever had... As it arrived I thought at the table I would never be able to finish the portion, but it was so delicious I literally could not stop eating. Crammed full of the freshest seafood and coated in just enough of whatever delicious sauce it was in. My idea of perfection. All the whilst Antonio and the wonderful waitress were kind and attentive, despite being run off of their feet. I love the old school system of adding the bill total up on paper as opposed to on a computer. Slightly slower but so much more personal. Sad to be leaving Torino tomorrow and particularly sad I won't be back to Il Giglio for a while now (they close soon for a few weeks for their summer break). Simply wonderful. The restaurant itself is elegant but still feels welcoming, with a spacious main dining room and a smaller, more intimate side room. The menu has plenty of choices, with a strong focus on seasonal and local ingredients. I tried several dishes, and they were all fantastic. One dish I definitely recommend is the steak tartare with quail egg yolk, mustard, anchovies, onions, capers, and a touch of Tabasco (a great balance of flavors), which is brought to your table with the ingredient kept separate, and the assembled table-side by the waiter. The zucchini blossoms stuffed with ricotta and mint on pea cream (light and fresh), were also great, just like the tajarin alla Monferrina, a classic Piedmontese fresh pasta that was incredibly flavorful. For mains, I had the larded pork fillet with pea cream and broad bean salad, and the standout of the evening--the braised beef in Barolo wine with drops of polenta, which was rich, tender, and full of flavor. Even the bread basket was memorable, with breadsticks and a variety of different breads. Yet given the proximity of this restaurant to major tourist attractions and the fact that an English menu was available, I was skeptical about the quality of our meal before it arrived. We followed the recommendations of our waiter and shared a calamari, shrimp, and octopus primo to start: it did not disappoint. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly and swimming (in the best way) in a wonderful sauce of garlic and olive oil. Continuing the theme, we ordered a plate of seafood risotto and seafood spaghetti. Many restaurants in northern Italy compete for the best risotto, and though it was not the "best," this risotto was quite good. It had the correct slightly al dente consistency and the flavor was that wholesome kind that you expect to find in local Italian cuisine. The spaghetti was served with a light and savory tomato sauce and piles of seafood on top of it. Although the flavors of each dish were quite different, they were both well accompanied by the spicy olive oil - that seemed to have been prepared in-house - which the waiter brought. The oil was genuinely hot and thus a welcome deviation from the regional norm. Several other patrons ordered an apple sorbet that was hand-spooned into glasses at the table, and we did the same. It was clear from the container in which it was served that the sorbet was made in the restaurant's own kitchen. The exquisite creaminess and popping-with-apple flavor of the sorbet deserves five stars. As a final disclaimer, the waiters were all kind, but the service itself was slow. Nevertheless, this pleasant surprise of a meal was excellent and I would recommend Spirito Santo for a leisurely lunch after browsing Torino's center.
