Such a disappointment. This place is a major rip-off and food portion sizes are tiiiiiiiny. This was my second time here - I went a few years ago with a big group and vaguely remember feeling ripped off then, too, but decided to give it another shot last night. I'm from Texas, and finding good Mexican food in Australia has been pretty futile -- as most people from Mexico or the Southwest U.S. would agree. But this place always gets touted as "authentic." And it was my birthday and we were in the mood for Mexican, so off we went. But from the beginning (poor service -- she didn't seem inclined to answer any questions about the food) through to the middle (tiny portion sizes) to the end (being hit with several unexpected surcharges), we had a very disappointing experience and won't be returning. First off, the place is cute in a colorful, rustic way -- it actually does look like lots of little places I've seen in Mexico. They do a good job with the decor, but some things are not ideal -- our table was broken and kept lurching like crazy to one side any time we touched it; the bathroom was filthy and there was pee all over the back of the toilet seat; and the sink was broken and gushing cold water (no matter how much you tried to shut it off). The location is also weird -- a little casita in the middle of a bunch of warehouses/light industrial places. We started with the chilaquiles with beans. These are supposed to be like "saucy" nachos but they were just strange and not very tasty. We got them with frijoles and vegan cheese (they use Oliana) and the vegan cheese was a joke -- like seriously maybe 7 tiny bits of Oliana in the entire dish. Riiiight. I don't recommend this dish at all (vegan cheese or otherwise). The best part was when we got the bill we were hit with THREE surcharges for this dish, totalling an extra $4. Seriously?! Then we ordered two tostadas: the Aguachile de Tofu and the Ceviche de Coliflor, and two tacos: Flor de Jamaica (marinated hibiscus flower), and Crackling Rice and Beans. The portion sizes were barely enough to feed half a person, let alone 2. The tostadas were a little bigger than the tacos and we actually did enjoy the flavours (the marinated hibiscus flower was interesting) but to charge $5.50 for a taco that's HALF the size of a taco in Mexico -- that's just insane!! They're smaller than your hand! When my partner went to pay the bill, we noticed the extra surcharges for vegan cheese (NOT mentioned anywhere on the menu and never mentioned by our server when we ordered) -- this is laughable for the few tiny strips of Oliana that were in the dish. We left hungry after dropping $46 on a birthday dinner that was insanely disappointing. We went home and made pasta. Seriously Don't go here unless you like getting price-gouged for small portions, inconsistent food quality, poor service, a lack of cleanliness, and a lack of transparency about surcharges.

I recently moved to Melbourne & been blessed with lots of Mexican food back home in California, I was skeptical about good Mex cuisine here. Headed to La Tortilleria for Cinco de Mayo and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered some chips with frijoles - which were average, I think it could've used a bit more lime / queso. For entrees, I got a pescado taco, a papas y jalapeño taco, and an aguachile tofu tostada. Would absolutely order both tacos again! As an avid tofu eater myself, I think it could've used a bit more marinade. My friends ordered the quesadilla, carnitas tacos, and nachos. They also enjoyed their food & would recommend the tacos too. Salsas were average...definitely not as spicy as back home! Overall, would recommend this spot!

I'm delighted to see people are discovering this magical slice of Mexico in the heart of industrial Kensington. This tiny little space has some of the best Mexican food in Melbourne. Big call, I know but hear me out. The menu is short, sharp and to the point. They do tacos and quesadillas aplenty. I highly recommend the pulled pork tacos. I know, I know. A lot of places do pulled pork and they're dubious bits of shredded ham. Not these guys. The pulled pork is simply garnished with shallots and chives and melts in your mouth. Hmmmmm. The quesadillas are a utopian cheese fest. I recommend the chirozo one. Oh my. Delicious pieces of meaty goodness in cheesy parcel. Make sure to get plenty of guacamole and salsa with everything that you order. The final breathtaking moment is the custard flan. DO NOT leave until you've tried this magical taste sensation. It's grandma's secret recipe and a delicate and creamy custard flan with sugar syrup. Oh my. Best thing of all? You can gorge on all this food for less than $30 per person. Do it. Do it now.

I don't know whether to be horrified of secretly proud that myself and three dining companions had arrived less than an hour earlier and had already polished off 16 tacos, two dishes of guacamole and two bottles of (BYO'd) wine... It was a frenzy of food as soon as we arrived, the food hitting the table in a flurry and our stomachs and mouths just wanting to get stuck in to every possible combination of tortilla, meat, vegetable and cheese. We eventually came up for air and declared to the waitress that "we're only just getting started...bring us the pork gringas and six more Al Pasto tacos" while opening our third and final bottle of wine. The meat had some kind of crazy influence over our brains. Two people at the table had a chilli eating contest (using bottle sauced we snuck in ourselves) and someone declared that we each need an individual flan for dessert, otherwise there will be fights. Jolly good call, I said, because that thing was all kinds of lip licking delicious and there's no way anyone could have come near my portion without me stabbing them with my fork. In under 90 minutes, we were out the door ridiculously full. At around $35 each, this was a meal I could happily have again every week. If this is what food is like in Mexico then I want to go!

Now I can tell people I'd had authentic Mexican tacos! My local friends in town recommended this joint to me like three times, but hey, I'd never remember the name of restaurants. I did a quick search on Yelp, and hey, an almost straight 5-starer (15 out of 16, and I'm looking at you, Dee M. =P), so it had to be it. It is in the middle of almost nowhere, but lucky that I stayed at a hotel nearby, so it's an easy 5mins cab ride, and given the bright, colourful drawing on the wall, you will not miss it. I ordered 3 tacos (fish + pork + beef, obviously), and a special cocktail with tequila (and coconut maybe?). Complimentary homemade tortilla chips were served, and swear to god I'd have ordered a whole dish of it if I wasn't by myself here. The sauce was done right, not crazy spicy but good enough to wake up your palate. The chips were great too, not salty or anything similar to what I had in HK (where mostly coming out of a bag of Doritos). Now tacos. I immediately like it. Nothing fancy. No over the top toppings, but with a lot of meat. That's a good start. I started with the fish taco, as it usually was the least favourite of mine. I was so wrong. BEST. FISH. TACO. EVER. Period. Maybe not that convincing for a guy coming from a city with no big Mexican food culture, but I said it. I'm quite certain that I wouldn't have the same fish taco for a very, very long time. The pork and the beef tacos are way on the top, too. The pork was grilled just right. And I particularly liked the big plate coming with the tacos, as I had this tendency of making a big mess eating tacos. I'm not sure if the plate is intended to use this way though... Didn't have the chance to try the flan though, I was way too full already. All in all, even with the big expectation of having the most authentic Mexican food in town, it didn't disappoint me. One of the joints that is not in the CBD but I'll recommend a detour for whoever wanting some good tacos.

If you want proper Mexican at a place that supplies most places in Melbourne then get to La Tortilleria. You'll be craving it in no time at all. Vegan and veg options are available and don't taste inferior to the meaty meals. Just ask for vegan cheese and you'll be set. All tortillas are gluten free also so you know you can cater for most dietary types. Let's talk about the food. Get the fish tacos. Crispy battered fish with a delicious crema topped with fresh onions. Get 2! The tacquitos are a must also. Get the potato with the most delicious salsa. We've made our way through the entire menu at this stage and haven't found a dud in the lot. Just be prepared to use your hands and get dirty. Leave room for the flan also. Such a simple but delicious dessert! Get the vanilla.

La Tortilleria is the only place in Melbourne that makes its Tortillla fresh, from scratch, from actual corn! I cannot explain how truly wonderful the difference is. But one visit and you'll understand why the Mexican community are flooding to this place. They have only been open a few weeks but they're already packed to the rafters with adoring customers. Alongside the incredible tortilla is a fabulous range of homemade chilli sauces and incredible toppings. The meat is of superb quality and the vegetables super fresh. Also recommended are their Mexican coffees. Very sweet and rich with cinnamon, they are perfect to wash down a plate of tacos. My only disappointment was that they had run out of flan after a very busy night. But I can't wait to try it next time as I will most definitely be going back for more.

I had been simply ITCHING to go here since it first popped up on my radar through Yelp. Where was this magical Mexican haven? When was I to inhale this Yelp-famous flan? I finally got to experience it for myself this past weekend and was not disappointed. La Tortilleria, hidden off a highway in an industrial part of town is a bit like a festive Mexican mirage - it's bright exterior sticking out like a sore thumb among the dull grey buildings beside it. We nabbed a table on it's teeny, tiny balcony making us feel a bit like we were on holiday in Acupulco. We went for the set menu because YOLO and also because it was only $30 per person (not including drinks) and this way we got to taste a little bit of everything. In fact, the dishes simply kept coming out! We indulged in nachos with guacamole (VERY highly recommended), tostadas, flautas (a cheesy pocket of goodness) and of course tacos, of which the Al Pastor was a particular stand out. This was such a venue that I recommend to EVERYONE, however a word of warning: the set menu does not include flan. I left flan-less, and nobody wants to leave La Tortilleria flan-less.

In a word delicious! I had heard a lot of good things about this place and I am very pleased to say that any expectations I had were exceeded. Driving through the industrial area to get there la tortilleria provides a bright burst of colour. The place itself is small and cosy. We were seated right infront of the tortilla press. It's very colourful and welcoming and the service was friendly and prompt. I loved the outdoor terrace seating so nice on a warm evening. These guys have definitely used the space well. The food was fresh and simple. The menu provided a good selection of options. If it overwhelms you you can go for the chef's selection which will give you some samples of the popular items on the menu. Although this was tempting it meant you would get 2 of everything which is not the way we like to eat. We share everything in order to try more options. And try we did. Our first round consisted of a beef empanada, Chicken tomale, pork taco and the taco special that had capsicum and mango as well as the tostadita de tingas. The tostadita was my fav with a crunchy base refried beans and chicken, this is a must try. Having demolished this rather quickly we ordered gaucamole and tortilla chips(sitting right in front of the tortilla press and watching others tucking in I just had to try them) and a couple of the quesadillas. I liked the simple authentic fresh flavours and i can't wait to go back.

PORK CRACKLING TOSTADAS! Right, that should be enough to get you here. But if it's not, let me elaborate... This authentic little joint is tucked in the back streets of Kensington and as soon as you spot it you'll be smiling. It's like a beacon in the night decked out with colourful lights, giving off a vibe that makes you feel glad you came from the get go. Inside is real cosy, with a tiny little kitchen right next to the door (how they manage to feed everyone out of it, I don't know but they make it happen) and a big glass window into the tortilla production area. Yes, they make their own tortillas on site which are available to purchase serparately so you can have your own authentic fiesta at home! The menu is great. I don't think there was any food over $9.00 and between the 3 of us we tried almost everything. We actually placed a second round of orders! As I mentioned before, I tried the pork crackling tostada. Oh man! I mean, you're hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like the occasional piece of pork crackling. Chuck that on a delicious little Mexican style pizza and you've got a winner! The beef taco was delious and succulent too. There was a bunch of other stuff we tried with no bad reviews. And on Tuesday's they have 3 tacos for $10! We even had the flan for dessert (go with vanilla) and it was all accompanied by sangria, paloma and sol. The staff were great, the food is kickass and the atmosphere is awesome. We even had another customer buy us drinks because everyone is just in such a great mood! La Tortilleria is worth going out of your way for!

Best. Mexican. Ever. This place is awesome! They make tortillas the traditional way and sell them all over Melbourne. And they are the bomb! Reading all of the other reviews I cannot add much more. The food is fresh and full of flavour, the staff are friendly and helpful and the ambiance is great. I felt like I was in Mexico and I wanted to stay there for as long as I could. We ordered the share platter for two which meant that we were able to sample some tacos, quesadillas and tostadas. Each of these were little handfuls of heaven!'= This is going to become a regular for us!

We had tried La Tortilleria's corn chips at Piedimonte's ... and they were delicious. So we decided to pay them a visit and see what else they had to offer. We ordered the set menu for $32pp the chef selects 6 dishes for you to try each. By my quick calculation of what we got at the end it wasn't any cheaper to do this ... So next time I would just pick exactly what I want. We tried chicken tostadas (yum!), corn chips and dips (yum!), nacho's (a bit soggy for my liking), potato flautas (yum), bean & spinach/cheese quesadilla's (OK), beef & pork tacos (yum, yum!!) and orange flan (yum). Also tried a lime margarita & Mexican coffee, both of which were delicious. The layout of the place is cool, particularly sitting downstairs at the front ... and the service is really friendly here. We will return!

With a fistful of coins and a mug of warm coffee, I walked across Harmony Park to the truck. There was a decent line, but eventually I ordered one fish taco. I was surprised at the price, but I suppose it's only because I'm American. I suppose $6 a taco is on par for Aussie food prices. The 2 tacos with chips platter seems like an okay deal at $12, but I wasn't that hungry. And then I waited. And I waited. Now, I'm a forgiving person. I admit there was a line of people. I appreciate authenticity as much as the next food snob, but I also am the type that if authenticity is what I craved, then I would pay the $150 for a flight to cancun from JFK, thumb down a colectivo to Tulum and order real fish tacos from prime riviera maya for mere pesos. But most of the time I am just looking for anything delicious wrapped in a corn tortilla. And there it was. The most perfect looking piece of fish, dressed up in the most perfect tasting batter, resting on a bed of pickled cabbage beneath a warm blanket of poppyseed mayo. Apply yucoteco brand verde sauce and enjoy. Verdict: food - incredible Price - negligible Service - lacking but worth another try should they return to coburg.
