Saturday night, 8 p.m., our first night in Rome -- our first time in Italy. We noticed the…read morerestaurant listed on the board in our hotel lobby. When we rolled up, we thought it was closed: the dining room was empty, and the door seemed locked. As we stood there debating what to do, the door was opened by a stranger who expressed amused surprise at our apparent inability to open a door and walk in. Meet Sabatino, our new best friend. We sat down at a two-top in the cozy, charming restaurant, and I wondered if it would be awkward being the only customers. I never found out. Within 15 minutes, two parties of eight showed up, and very soon every other table was full as well. Sabatino expertly handled the entire room with effortless grace. He has a gift for making every table feel special and welcome, taking his time with everyone in at least three fluent languages. We saw his generosity, kindness, passion for the food, and sly humor in every interaction and felt lucky to be there. And the food. Oh, the food. Sabatino pretty much told us what we would eat, and we were happy to obey. That first night we started with, what else, the cheese, jam, and cured meats platter. Delicious! Then came my husband's sheep specialty, a house favorite, and for me, delicate, puffy pillows of ravioli with a cream sauce and lots of pepper. Heaven. The second night, we had the pleasure of meeting the queen of the kitchen, Giulia. Compared to Sabatino, anyone would seem shy, but within minutes we were sharing photos of our pets and laughing about what fools we are for them. We also happened to be seated next to a fun couple from New Zealand we'd run into earlier that day outside the Vatican, so the serendipity continued. We happily dove into the charcuterie platter again, followed by lasagna, penne, and panna cotta with sour cherries -- silky, decadent, and the perfect ending to our last meal in Rome. Thank you, Sabatino and Giulia. We can't wait to return, and when we do, Osti Matti will be both our first meal and our last! xo

This restaurant was still open and right next door to our airbnb so we rushed here to get something in our bellies before this restaurant closed for the night. The server rushed us in to a table. After we ordered, he brought us bread and water while we waited for our food. All the food was great, we ordered two pizzas, a pasta and a salad. We got two pizzas: the Diavolo and the other, I cannot recall the name, but was the most interesting pizza I have ever had. The Diavolo was spicy and cheesy, but the other was chock full of ingredients: egg, olives, and the prosciutto (forgive me if I identified the meat incorrectly, I'm not a connoisseur of cured meats). They were personal pizzas but my dad and I each ate half ... So we ended up with a full pizza left over. The carbonara pasta looked pretty good and so did the salad, but I didn't get a taste of either one. My sister did note that the carbonara was slightly overlooked, since the egg in the sauce had started to scramble. At the end of the meal, we received small biscotti and meringue, I'm guessing to sweeten the bite of the check. The cost wasn't as heavy as we thought (not quite €€€), thank goodness. Overall, a pleasant meal. My favorite part of the experience was the fact that all the families and couples in the restaurant were Italian. A great way to start off our short visit in Rome!

The waitress was fast, super professional was even nice enough to run down the street and hand me my umbrella that I left on my seat! The Suppli which the waitress recommended was also a winner and went great with the fantastic house wine. A local hangout. GO!

We weren't sure it was gonna be any good when they brought out chicken strips covered in sesame seeds and bbq sauce which seemed to be from McDonald's. It also was a little weird on the what was an appetizer and what was an entrée! Then on top of that we ordered mozzarella balls and I asked for a side of tomato sauce and the waiter brought me ketchup so that was kind of confusing! Now let me tell you the pros! Pros: Great great great! So the sesame seed chicken strips actually tasted amazing! And although they brought me ketchup to go with the mozzarella balls turns out they didn't even need tomato sauce! They were amazing all on their own!! I ordered the Pumpkin ravioli and honestly with was the best and freshest ravioli I have ever had in my entire life! Just amazing! Definitely recommend! If you are here in Rome try this place out! It's not a touristy spot only locals come here so it's definitely worth a try and it's on the cheap side too for the quality you get!! Just amazing! Then I had the tiramisu for dessert and it was literally the best I have ever had! I thought the one I had yesterday was amazing but turns out this one blew it out the water! 1 out of 10 I give it a 20!!! Thank you so much for the great experience and the amazing way to end our trip in Roma!!!
