We tried Rosemary Baby (Raspberry and Tuscan rosemary) and safron and pine nut cream gelato. Nothing like we ever tasted...The atmosphere is lively and energetic, with long lines that reflect its international reputation. We waited in line about 30 minutes but was well worth it. Despite the long line and higher prices, Gelateria Dondoli remains a must-visit destination. Enjoying a cone beneath the medieval towers of San Gimignano turned the experience into more than dessert...it becomes part of the town's charm, and unique character.

They offer a wide range of unique flavors -- things like rosemary, lavender, and other creative combinations you don't usually see. It makes for a fun experience trying something different. All the flavors we tried were good, and overall the gelato was excellent. We've had some incredible gelato elsewhere in Italy, but this was still very enjoyable. Worth stopping in if you're in San Gimignano. Grab some and enjoy by the well in the center of the piazza.

Or, to be a bit more precise, sample all the gelato, and if you find one with the right texture/flavor, go for it. But be sure to sample, because quite frequently the gelato is older and/or crystalline, which is basically a waste of your money. (Then again, the good stuff *is* good, so if you can't be bothered to walk to the next good gelateria...)

We've been fortunate enough to make this our fourth trip to Italy, so let's just say my husband and I have eaten our fair share of gelato. My favorite thing about this gelateria though is that he doesn't just do gelato. There are two fridges worth of delicious gelato ice cream sandwiches, cakes, gelato bars, etc. I actually go to gelaterias for the gelato made treats rather than gelato itself. I liked everything I got, but I was especially wowed by the orange cake. I'm not a big citrus-flavored-dessert person, but this had me wanting more. It was light and reminded me of a creamsicle--yum! If you're lucky, you will get to meet Giancarlo who has a welcoming smile that makes you feel better to be supporting his gelateria.

My mother and I were on vacation in Montecatini at a hotel that was a 1 minute walk away (dangerous). Our morning routine was to get a cappuccino and un caffe. The espresso was strong and full of flavor. Most days we came back later in the day and tried other varieties - all great. Now about the desserts....nothing like I've ever tasted in America! Everything was so clean, had unique tastes with a perfect amount of sweetness - just mouthwatering. The prices were super low too. One visit we got 5 pastries for 8 euros. Giovannini makes me want to vacation there again ASAP!!
