I have two opposing viewpoints of our stay at the La Veta Inn on the first night of our roadtrip. First, the inn itself is quaint and charming. The courtyard suite was very comfortable. The courtyard was beautiful, with Italian lights strung above and a great big fireplace. A beautiful restaurant and cozy bar were very inviting. We were really excited to enjoy the hospitality described on the inn's website. On the other hand, we were greatly disappointed to arrive and realize that the entire place was shuttered due to the pandemic. Restaurant, bar, and courtyard closed. Our room key was in an envelope on the reception desk. Not a soul in sight. No coffee maker, silverware, plates, water glasses, or any other comfort of home. All there was was four walls and a roof, electricity, running water and a few towels in the bathroom. The website made NO MENTION AT ALL of the fact that these were all closed, so I feel like I was duped and cheated. Had I known, we would have booked a room in Alamosa and just spent the afternoon in the La Veta / Cuchara area, and looked forward to staying here another time. I would not even think of booking a room at this inn in the future without first confirming that the amenities described on their website are in fact being offered. In fact, I'm disappointed and pissed off enough that I probably won't consider staying here at all. To the owners of the inn - you should make it obvious on your website that the only thing you are providing during the pandemic is lodging. No services, no amenities, no greeting, no nuthin'. You are misleading and ripping off your guests with statements on your site that are simply not true in these unusual times. Be honest, for goodness sake. Don't bullshit your customers. 5 Stars for the building. 0 stars for the complete lack of service provided. -5 stars for not being forthright and informing the guests of this fact. read more

La Veta is the gateway to the Highway of Legends. October when the leaves turn is the perfect time to visit. Great place to stay when you come to the Great Sand Dunes. Such a nice family who runs the hotel. Highly recommend it! read more

I am putting this for my elderly grandparents who came here last week on Thanksgiving Day of 2019: "The rooms are great but I hope you don't have to deal with the owner. After seeing the check-in was 24 hours a day, we got in at around 2:15pm after driving from a few states away. Nobody was at the check-in counter when we arrived, so we called the number. Nobody answered. We intensely had to go to the bathroom after driving, and there wasn't a public restroom in the lobby area. So, we went upstairs looking for a restroom, and a door was open and we popped in and went to the restroom. We left it exactly as we found it. So we left the hotel since there was no sign of the check-in person and they didn't call us back. We drove around for 30 minutes and returned. The owner was back and told us that it would be a charge for an "early check in" and another charge for "dirtying a room." My grandparents are stately people and by no means dirtied a room. The man was rude but they agreed to the charges. Later, my grandfather checked the website and there was nothing on the site about an early check-in fee. My grandfather brought it up to the owner and the man was extremely rude and told my grandparents "to never come back." The man didn't respond to logic and then was threatening my 83 year old grandpa. Unfortunate experience with an unreasonable man. Don't stay here, it's not worth it. read more

We stayed in the mountain room 210, please note you do have to go up stairs. I love the painted room as it depicted being between the mountains like La Veta. The bathroom is spacious with a separate tub and shower. The shower has small seats as well. The bedroom is a good size with a king bed. The mattresses have been updated and they are a soft medium. I loved it and felt like I was sleeping in a cloud. We found the location to be quiet. The owners are friendly. Be sure to check out their restaurant, Agathas, opened Thurs to Sunday. read more

Well - I was torn on the number of stars to give this place. From the outside it's so cute, and some of the rooms I peeked into were darling. Unfortunately that wasn't true of the room I was in. It was okay - mostly clean (although there was a collection of dust bunnies and an old toothpick when I went to plug my phone in my the nightstand...) I have to believe that our room was next on the renovation list, as there was paint in the cupboard (the walls were just white) and the concierge said "oh - there was A/C in here yesterday - but it's gone today!" The beds were comfortable. The patio looked awesome (we were in town for a business overnight, so we didn't get in early enough to enjoy the patio) and again, the overall vibe is awesome. Like some of the other reviewers, I am split on how to review the hotel. So I will start with the restaurant. The restaurant gets four stars. The food is amazing. The chef, Alys, is very friendly and constantly checks with the customers to make sure they are happy. Even if this restaurant were in LoDo, it would still be a 4-star establishment. Service is slow. That's La Veta. You are going to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, where the pace is set at decades ago slow. Dinner entrees are indeed expensive, but it's a full meal with a salad. The Groupon deal included a free dinner for 2, and there is a Yelp special that is 2-for-1 when you check in. Lunches are cheap and just as good as dinner. All menus are done daily and are fairly small. They also have breakfast. Nice patio in back. The restaurant alone is a good reason to visit. The hotel is another story. They are trying very hard to be a boutique hotel, but I just don't think the area has enough through-traffic to generate the income they need to go to the next level. What they have done is very nice, but they still have a long way to go. The lobby and restaurant are great. The artwork in the rooms is a very nice touch. But the building is old. The rooms are an odd mix. The beds were comfortable, but there was nowhere to put clothes you unpack (no wardrobe). There was a closet but not a stand for a suitcase. Our suite had a kitchen with a coffeemaker but no coffee. The bathroom did not have tissues, and there was nowhere to put toiletries except on the toilet tank, which was tiny. There were no towel racks. The heaters are ancient electric baseboard heaters that are very hard to control. The main plumbing line went through the kitchen and you could hear it anytime anyone in the building flushed a toilet. Room numbers were stenciled cheaply on the door. It's nice that they allowed our dog, but to get in our room, we had to walk through a sandy alley, and there was no mat inside or outside the room to wipe our feet, so there was dirt everywhere. We stayed two nights and did not get maid service while we were there. La Veta is in a gorgeous area, but I don't think any rooms have a view. We faced a disgusting alley that smelled like urine. The front of the building faces the gas station across the street which has two huge ugly propane tanks. I expected a view of the mountains. That was a letdown. Even with all these little negatives, we did have a very good trip, and the positives far outweighed the negatives. But people should know before they go that this is not a 4-star hotel and probably never could be without a massive upgrade. But they are trying, and I admire them for that. read more

My wife and I stayed here in May after we purchased a voucher through Travel Zoo. We had never been to La Veta and we were not sure what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised. The Inn was cute, cozy and welcoming. The staff very friendly. The food was good and the ambiance of the place warm and inviting. Rooms were clean and comfortable. We definitely plan to return next year. Wil I will rate the price range $$$ (Pricey), keep in mind that you can find some bargains during off seasons and off days fo the week through Travel Zoo and Groupon that make the price far more attractive. Keep an eye out for those if you have some flexibility. read more

This place has a great patio out back if you like outdoor dining. Lots of room inside too but the hours here vary so be sure to check out when they are open. I have had some great meals here but when I went for lunch last week the menu was very limited. The food came out fast but was very small portions and marginal in taste and presentation. The patio is lovely so maybe just go for a drink and appetizers and see if the place shapes up. read more

I love the La Veta Inn now more than ever! I stayed here about 7 years ago and found the town and the inn to be perfectly charming. Since Ryan and Ali have taken over, it's just that much better! They accommodated a pretty late check in for us with nothing but smiles and world class service. I understand from them that the property had fallen into disrepair prior to their taking it over but you wouldn't know it at a glance now. They must have put a ton of work into this place and it shows. My favorite part (so far) is the beds; brand new mattresses and sheets. Come visit them and enjoy this little gem. I love this town and the La Veta Inn was a great place to stay. I never would have known about either without Groupon. Comfortable and large room with separate kitchen. Beautiful courtyard and great food. Also enjoyed the bar and games inside, such as table shuffle board. Like another review I read there is an unusually large collection of dust on the floor next to the night stands that is noticeable soon as you look over there. And the beds need to be attached to the walls again. Small details that are easily remedied. La Veta is a great base to explore the region and this was a wonderful place to stay. My husband and I have stayed at La Veta Inn on two different occasions, the first being in 2007 and the most recent in October 2014. I was a little reluctant to stay here again due to the fact that I did not care for it the first time, being that our ground floor room had a view of the alley way. Any way we decided to give it another try, I was pleasantly surprised by our King Suite on the second floor, it was very quaint and charming, my only negativity about this room is the water pressure in the shower, I would have probably been cleaner with a "french sponge bath". We had the most fun having cocktails and dinner on both nights that we were there, I believe the name of the manager and chef is Jean and her husband Mike, such nice people. When we are in town for a short getaway...we will stay here again. read more

This historic hotel is a found gem! The owners are wonderfully accomidating and so sweet. They bought this wonderful old place a year and a half ago and are renovating it to perfection. The main part of the hotel is historic rooms with wide plank pine board floors and unique furnishings. They have pet friendly rooms in the back with tile floors and a pet friendly city park across the street. A quiet little courtyard nestles in the center, perfect for morning coffee and an evening glass of wine. Everything in La Veta is within easy walking distance. Great stay!!! read more

My boyfriend and I bought a groupon for La Veta Inn although we had never heard of La Veta. We came down for two nights over Christmas and had a great time. The town is tiny and quiet, but everyone in La Veta is friendly. The Inn seemed to be the center of all activity over Christmas and we were able to meet people who came for dinner and drinks at the restaurant and bar. The food is spectacular and the service is top notch. Janelle and Wes made it a point to get us everything we needed, including drinks, food, snacks, movies, and even entertainment for our dogs. Chef Scott is very friendly and brought us complementary drinks and snacks while we relaxed in the cozy lobby by the fire. Dave's southern hospitality is much appreciated and we enjoyed the caramel popcorn his wife made and brought over to the hotel for guests! The rooms are authentic and artistically designed. We did notice some dust and the tile floors in the room made it easy for us to bring dirt in from outside and collect on the floors. These were such insignificant details to us during our stay and never overshadowed the fact that the hotel was clean, beautiful, and filled with staff who would do anything to accommodate us. We can't wait to come back to La Veta, especially in the summertime, when we hear the town gets busier. When we do, we will surely be returning to La Veta Inn. read more

The LaVeta Inn is very Colorado. The owner-operator couple were friendly and eager to accommodate. The place is a work in progress, but my room was spacious, clean and quiet. Eclectic, charming and a little bit rough, Just like the town itself. The downstairs restaurant was closed when I visited. In fact, ALL of LaVetas restaurants (and shops, gas stations, museums...) seemed to be closed when I visited. LaVeta is a sleepy little spot and though quintessential Colorado, there's not much to see, do or buy. So I don't necessarily recommend staying the night in LaVeta. But if you do, stay at the Inn. read more

No true sense of customer service- not reviewing quality of rooms or the food. I made reservations at 9:40 PM on a Monday for the next night, a Tuesday. By Tuesday morning, the news was reporting severe weather (a blizzard) for the part of the state I would be returning home through on Wednesday afternoon. I called the hotel Tuesday @ noon to cancel my reservations and asked for a call back with the intent of re-booking for the next Monday night. There was no answer. My message explained that I was older and was not used to driving in blizzards. I also called Hotels.com to cancel. They said it was up to the hotel owner as to whether or not there would be a charge. I got a call Wednesday morning from Hotels.com stating the owner would still charge me for the night regardless of the circumstance. This is even after I told them of my intent to re-book for the next week. Immediately after that call, I got a call from the owner stating the same and stating that "perhaps you should have checked the weather first". Since I was planning my short trip to La Veta to see if I might want to settle there, it was a very disappointing first impression. The cancellation policy on the website states based on the small business needs, they are handled on a case by case basis. I think my request was reasonable under the circumstances, but evidently good will is not part of the equation for this hotel.I will still make my trip to La Veta, but I will stay elsewhere. read more

We found this place though a Groupon and fell in love with La Veta and the Inn. Great people, great food, and a beautiful mountain setting. Close to the Dunes and Taos, but there's also plenty of things to do in the town. Be sure to bring a camera everywhere you go! We especially enjoyed talking to the locals and learning more about the area. The room was spacious and clean, just a couple minor repairs could help spruce up the place, but it didn't ruin our experience. We even had a ghost sighting our second night, which is apparently very common at the historic Inn. We will definitely be back! read more

This is a super lovely inn in beautiful La Veta, CO. I got a suite from my Groupon, and the room is uniquely decorated, just like any other rooms in this inn. Each room, if not occupied, can be visited for the decorations set up by local artists. I also liked the bath products the inn provided for us. It's organic with great natural fragrance, with no chemicals added! Your skin feels great after using them too. I would have purchased them if the price was a little lower though. One little note is a room with a very well-crafted red rattle snake on the wall. The wood work is done so well that it looks super realistic. For people who have strong fears toward reptiles, better check with the front desk that that's not the room to get. The food at Alys is really good and in big portions. It is a pretty upscale restaurant in this area, so the price for the main entree with a salad is about 19-23 dollars. But my rib-eye steak was juicy and tender, and the salmon my friend ordered was lightly fused with flavor and juicy as well. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and the food here and I would come back if I'm around the area! read more

THEY GAVE OUR ROOM AWAY!!! We booked with La Veta Inn in February 2018 for a June 2018 stay. After driving since 6am earlier that day with two young kids, we received a notice that our credit card needed to be updated on their system. We did so within minutes of that notice. About two hours later, we arrived exhausted at La Veta Inn (an incredibly small town with very limited accommodations) ready to check in. After we gave our name, the guy at the front counter said "I just gave your room away." We thought he was joking. He wasn't. He said our card declined. We said "we updated it awhile back. Did you call us to confirm our arrival?" With a stunned face, he said "yes, I mean no, I didn't call you. Sorry." So we had to pack back up our car and look for a place to stay last minute in a town of 800 people at 9pm at night. The guy did not offer any suggestions on where else to stay and didn't do anything to help us despite having a confirmed reservation for four months. He cared more about his revenue and filling a room vs a tired, exhausted family. All he had to do was call. But he took advantage of someone else asking for a room so he took it. During our 15 day road trip across America, this was the only place that didn't treat us with respect or an offer to help. I strongly recommend not to stay here. They care mor read more

Absolutely amazing location. Motel is wonderful. Quaint and beautiful. Owners are amazing people, very friendly and so helpful. Loved getting to know them a little; we stayed a week. Wish it was longer. Town is also absolutely adorable. Pets are very welcome in pet friendly rooms. Park is right across the street from the motel. Lovely patio area. Wish I could give the Inn a better rating as I really had a good time there. My complaint is simply that the Inn is not well sound-proofed and there was an adorable but quite early-rising and early noise-making child resulting in my not sleeping either of the two nights I was there. The room was wonderful, the food great, we had a lovely singer/songwriter play for us one night, the rest of La Veta was charming, (make sure you check out the Deerprint Wine Bistro and the Ryus Avenue Bakery) but a good night's sleep would have raised this rating. read more

I have stayed at the Inn each of the five times I have attended the Ricky Tims quilt retreat next door. The place is charming and it COULD be wonderful. I've always stayed in one of the historic rooms and have enjoyed the decor. The beds are quite comfortable. BUT. The hot water is capricious. Some mornings I had hot water right away. Other days I had to let the water run for a wasteful ten minutes. One day, the handle came off and I couldn't shut the water off. I love the place, but they really need to upgrade their water system. read more

Overpriced. I like older charming hotels and parts of the La Veta Inn are very nice (hallways are cute, outside patio charming) and other parts meh. The bathroom was updated and clean. The older furniture in the room was cute. On the less good side: Artist based decor in the room seemed oddly mismatched (supposedly each room features art/decor of one artist). Fitted sheet came off mattress in the night which is major crime in my book. I hate possibly touching the bare mattress. To get ice I had to go to the bar and the room had no ice bucket so had to use my sports bottle to carry any ice back to the room. Bad: There was a screen door at the end of the hall which led to a walkway and stairs to the patio and this seemed to remain open all night. When we went to room at night it was open and at 6am the next morning it was open. There is an unlocked gate to the patio from the street. It seems that anyone could have opened the patio door and climbed the stairs to get into the rooms wing of the Inn. At 6am the front door to the Inn was locked but this back door had been left open all night it seemed. I realize La Veta is small but even in small towns I think hotels/inns generally are more secure than this. read more

What a great place. We have stayed here a couple of times and each time have enjoyed our decorated room and the restaurant and bar. Hotel management and staff are always friendly and available. As a morning coffee drinker, I was very pleased to find great coffee available. The town of La Veta is unique, I think I counted 1 paved street. But what really impressed me with the town are the number of local artisans and friendly people. They actually make you feel welcome. We stayed for a long weekend. We would recommend it for anyone, family or couple. Not fancy, but comfortable. Food is outstanding. Amenities are plentiful, including a peaceful patio for relaxing or eating, pool table, shuffleboard, restaurant and bar on premises. La Veta is a sleepy little town, but not asleep. There are restaurants and stores a few steps away. And the whole thing is right off the Highway of Legends, with awesome sights a short ride away. Lastly, it is really inexpensive. My fiance and I had a recent opportunity to take a weekend getaway to La Veta Inn. We live in Denver and try to explore as much of Colorado that we can and love to bring our dogs with. This was our first time visiting this portion of the state. First of all it was a nice, easy drive from Denver. I always appreciate not having to deal with traffic on I70. We arrived with a cheerful, professional greeting from Jenelle. She quickly checked us in, gave us a tour and made sure we had everything we needed. The accommodations are great! Our room had a spacious kitchenette, warm shower and very comfortable beds. We arrived around 8pm on Friday and were very happy to find out the hotel restaurant and bar were still open and happy to serve. That night we enjoyed a wonderful meal, plenty of options on the menus. The next morning we enjoyed another wonderful menu in the restaurant. The staff was very helpful on suggestions for local adventures. We had a couple days of great daytrips and easy drives seeing new to us parts of the state. It is a wonderful location to see the "Highway of Legends" and local towns. If you choose to leave the Inn and walk around town of La Veta you will find it is a very nice small town with so many friendly people. You may not want to leave the Inn much though with the cozy patio with a fireplace, or with the bar area that has plenty of games, etc to keep you entertained. I'm so glad we explored and picked La Veta Inn to stay at. We immediately felt comfortable and at home thanks to the great staff. We will be make this trip again for sure! read more

We had a Groupon to stay two nights at the La Veta Inn that we used over Thanksgiving weekend. We arrived an hour early before check in, but they would not let us check in until over thirty minutes past when the normal check in time was. Our room had two floor lamps and an overhead lamp, neither of the floor lamps worked or were fixed after we told them about it. The room was extremely cold (no in-room thermostat). We asked for them to turn it up, but it was still cold in our room. It was like staying in a tent. During our stay they were having sewage issues so we had no hot water in our room (which they did not bother to tell us when we were down for breakfast). Best part of the Inn was the free continental breakfast -- orange juice, coffee, fresh pastries. In our Groupon deal we were suppose to receive a three course dinner at the restaurant, but it ended up being closed because of the sewage issues. Instead they offered us a $5 Sunday brunch in place of the $66 dinner. We left early and paid for the one night we stayed. They also put on an extra $60 charge to my card for the expensive lotion/shampoo they tried to get you to use so they could charge you that was in the room. We obviously did not use it and think it was extremely low blow because they were upset about us leaving early. read more
