Come through Walsenburg quite a bit now and I really like La Plaza -had the prime rib dinner for $18 and the meat was good, broccoli too and decent baked potato. Bread and butter prior was super fresh. Really enjoyed the patio and live music on an early Friday night. We had fast service.

Real hit and miss. I ordered the burger which was excellent. Husband ordered the fajita salad "special" which was inedible. Staff was an odd mix. We asked after the history of the building and our waitress didn't know anything about its history so instead gave us an unrequested commentary on how marijuana is changing things in their City. Overall, a very strange experience. Would not recommended - but as our waitress pointed out there are few choices in town and they are really, it. Oh comma least I forget - they also charged us for both meals despite not being able to eat a bite of one of them and describing how rancid the chicken was. One last insult. But for that I would have not rated them at all rather than give a poor rating, which is not really my style.

We stayed at this lovely turn of the century hotel on our way down to the Sand Dunes National Park. Positives: I absolutely loved the place. The hotel has been refurbished in old timey style but has modernized CLEAN en suite bathrooms and an array of rooms to choose from (some have a kitchenette and connected adjoining looking more like a miniature apartment then regular rooms). There is a common area atop the stairs with a SMALL tv, dvd, vcr combo. They offer a small selection of kids and family movies, but the old bus depot in town is a good place for a rental. Some games are also available to use. A snacks and beverage station is located at the end of the hall. They have a keurig machine with pods of several types of coffee, a mini fridge with milk, some fruit and also some cheese crackers and instant oatmeal. I thought this was awesome in case someone was hungry or missed bfast!!! All the staff, including the owners, are super friendly! The service was impeccable. Their restaurant seemed like the best option for dinner. The food was good and plentiful (we had the burgers and fresh veggies for $9, the peppers were delicious) and the orange chocolate cake was delicious as well according to my friend (huge portion). Breakfast was included and was served in the bistro area. It included bananas, muffins, coffee, orange juice. Once seated the owner brought us a platter including scrambled eggs, two blueberry pancakes and two sausage links with syrup. Negatives: THE TRAINS! Unfortunately the trains honk and honk so loud it literally RATTLES YOUR BRAIN! I have never experienced anything like it AND I LIVE NEXT TO THE RAILROAD! Nothing they can do about it at La Plaza inn. I am sure that the sound is just as loud anywhere in Walsenburg. Make sure you bring some ear plugs! I fell asleep around 5 am :( The mattress in room 3 was really really bad. I am talking like, old grandma' springs mattress that has seen many many customers! There is no if, ands or buts, THEY NEED NEW MATTRESSES. They are crucial for the traveler. Who wants to sleep in a squeaky, lumpy mattress after a long day's drive? There is no TEA on the self serve station in the common area's hall. I really wanted a hot tea after dinner as coffee has the habit of keeping you up at night (more time to hear the trains). There was no DECAF either even though there were 3 different coffee types to choose from :( I wish there were more fresh fruit for bfast. I am one of few people who does not eat eggs, sausage, or pancakes. So really I wish they would have told us they were bringing us a plate with this selection, so I would have not waisted all that food :(( I hate waisting food and I could have just as well have eaten two muffins and two bananas and be happy (or a banana and some other fresh fruit LOL). This B&B is still almost 2 hrs drive from the Dunes. Waiting for breakfast to be served at 8:30 we ended up at the park by 11. That was already too hot for the dunes :(

We only stayed one night, on our way to our home base for the rest of our motorcycle touring trip; however, we are very likely to return and use Pennington Place as home base for our next trip to the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The property is gated and passcode protected. It felt very safe and secure. We stayed in the Sevilla Marie room at Pennington Place (all of their rooms are named after Donna and Rich's parents, which I thought was a nice touch--and decorated in a way that honors the namesake. How cool is that?) Our room was very clean, the bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion. The shower had good water pressure and our room had a small kitchenette. Had we stayed longer, we may have used that more, but for just overnight, we didn't really need it. And oh the bed--very, very comfortable. And the pillows were just right--not too puffy, not too thin. And right out the window is a beautiful view of Spanish Peaks. Donna asked what our evening plans were and we said we were going to go into town to have dinner. She had a recommendation for us and we told her we would try it. Without even being asked, she called La Plaza for us and asked if we needed a reservation. They said that would be safe and so she reserved us a table. Little did she know, it was our anniversary. And the food was great--we highly recommend it if you are staying in Walsenburg. We also were lucky enough to join two other couples for Donna's full breakfast the next morning. It was nice to sit around a table--so few of us do that these days--and visit with new friends over Donna's delicious food. She served a savory egg dish, garnished with avocado and salsa. She also provided a cinnamon sugar muffin and a fruit and yogurt parfait. We drank juice and water, but she also offered coffee--just no takers this morning. If you are coming to Colorado and passing through Walsenburg, this is a no-brainer. Stay here. And if you haven't ever considered Walsenburg as a peaceful, quiet, serene getaway....do yourself a favor and come meet Rich and Donna and see their beautiful location. The property has quite a story, but I've typed too much already. And besides, it's a better story coming from them! Go see them! And take some friends...Pennington Place would be a great place for a group of 6-8 people just wanting to get away from the rat race!

The location was perfect for walking to a restaurant or the wine bar in town. The owner made fabulous breakfasts and was up early to make sure the coffee was ready. She was delightful and sweet. She did her best to make sure we were cared for, comfortable, and well fed to begin the day. Our private bathroom had a soaking tub rather than a shower. We had to use the general bathroom if we wanted a shower. (I was ok with that.) La Veta is a very small town at the base of the Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado. The townsfolk were very friendly and welcoming to visitors. I would go back in a heartbeat.

This place has many positive points, my favorite of which is the wonderful coffee and breakfast cooked and served by our host. I would be remiss though, if I didn't point out a couple of negatives as a "just so you know". There is NO air conditioning so on hot days, even with the windows open and fans running at night, it is warm. We didn't perish but it didn't inspire snuggling. The second issue for me was the lack of a stand-up shower. There is a nice claw foot tub with a 3' rubber thing that you plug one end into the spigot and a shower spray comes out the other end. However considering its 3' length I had to kneel in the tub to rinse my hair and do my bathing. No, I am not a bath person. For my $105 I wish they'd install a stand up shower fixture and an oblong ring at the top from which to hang a shower curtain. Our beds were very comfortable and the overall ambiance is pleasant. We enjoyed the teeny tiny town of La Veta; it is worth getting off the beaten path to visit.
