Started with an application and a $25 application fee. Low & behold I'm approved. Several weeks past with posts for available dogs but rarely (90%) do the posts respond to my inquiry. Adoption Fees differ from post to post. I've kept the messages and advertised info. After traveling 700 miles rt to pick up dog, 3 mo later, messages demand money, demand a signed contract and respond to me with insults. If a the dog adoption costs are equivalent to purchasing a registered dog, it's prudent to buy a registered pup. BTW, I paid $300 plus used my vet for spaying. After following LRCP on FB for 2 years, I finally submitted an application to adopt a lab through the rescue. I was contacted by an AC right away and scheduled a phone interview last Saturday. I could tell within a minute that it wasn't going to go well. I get along well with everybody (I'm a preschool teacher) and I'm pretty skilled at "reading" people. My daughter and her husband are both young professionals in fields that require excellent communication skills. The AC immediately put us on the defensive, and her questions were more an interrogation than a "getting to know you". It was awful! After 15 minutes, I ended the "interview" and withdrew my application. After our experience, we did some digging into the LRCP and there were lots of folks who had experiences like ours. There are two Lab Rescue organizations in the Washington area. Lab Rescue of the LRCP is the largest and most well organized. It is a non-profit organization staffed solely by volunteers. After the demise of my last Lab, Thunder at the age of 13 from cancer, I waited as much as I could until I became convinced that my old boy would want me to have a new Lab. I started looking and came across the Lab Rescue folks. To make the long story short, I've got a new life companion, Tango, who fills my heart with joy. Adopting from the Lab Rescue folks takes a little bit of time. After submitting an application, an adoption coordinator gets in touch with the applicant, and if successful, one can look at Labs or attend an Adoption Day event at numerous places in the DC area. There is a mandatory donation that serves to defray the incredible expense of running such an organization. Dogs have to be neutered either before or after the adoption process. And normally, medical records come with the animal. In my case, I went to the adoption day with my BF and came out with a wonderful 9-month old boy. If you like Labs, this is a wonderful way to give a labby a new lease on life. Especially with the current economic climate, the number of dropped pets is large, and the adoption day may have 50 to 60 gorgeous Labs waiting to find a second home. I had a home visit about 30 days after the adoption, to ensure that the dog was being taken care of properly. Since the adoption, we've totally bonded and he's as much a part of my family as anyone else. Besides doing something really good, adopted dogs tend to look at their new parents as the people who rescued them. Deep inside, I know they understand. And their love is unconditional. I've had a good experience dealing with Lab Rescue. My adoption application was approved relatively fast, and the Adoption Coordinator was nice to work with. Keep in mind that about 75% of their dogs are not purebred Labs, but most look like Labs. I think they should be more liberal in allowing dogs to go to townhouses. For the most part, big yards are for people, not necessarily for dogs. I think most dogs would rather go on a nice walk than be let out in the yard. That's just me. read more

The two Lab rescue groups mentioned in the first post cull all Labs from the rescues and shelters. The adoption process is ridiculous--including a one month "vetting" of prospective adopters. The culling of labs is insane in a and of itself, as labs are the first dogs to be adopted from any kill shelter. So many good rescue organizations exist in this area--such as rescueme.org, awla.org, and homewardtrails.org These rescues also offer much more info up front, such as whether the dog is good with other dogs, children, cats, strangers, is food-aggressive, etc. LRLC supplies none of this information. You can waste hours and hours with this organization. They don't respond to emails for days (and seem to take pride in it--"we are all volunteers . . . email if you haven't heard from us in two weeks"), and require you to drive to multiple locations to meet the animals, with little information on the dogs. Ironically, the reason we wanted a lab is their inherent friendliness toward children, but LRLC refuses to let any labs go to families with children, unless they had come from families with children. We took our child to every dog interview at the other rescues to see how the dog reacted--duh. We found our loves at homewardtrails.org and rescueme.org. It surprises me that there are any negative reviews as the volunteers go out of their way to find you the perfect lab that will fit what you are looking for. I adopted my lab from them and I plan to return just like most adopters. The people who help you find your dog are very helpful and going to visit the pup at a foster home was very informative as well. I paid the $25.00 application fee, despite some poor online reviews. There was simply no response from them and I waited over 2 weeks. I feel like they are not a reputable rescue - who would charge someone upfront to submit an "application" and never follow up? I disputed the charge with my credit card company. An amazing organization that takes the time to interview perspective adopters. They also take the time to get to know the labradors they rescue. They truly care that they find the right family for their animals. They take in so many medically neglected, former breeder, and/or abused animals. Some of their animals are bonded pairs, they require that they stay together, even if one of the animals isn't a lab (one bonded pair was a lab and a cat). We will forever be grateful to Lab Rescue for completing our family. We live in an apartment, so it felt like it took forever to find a dog that they'd approve for an apartment, but it was worth the wait. They took the time to explain to us why they will/won't approve certain dogs for certain living arrangements. Lab Rescue really let us down. We are a loving dog family. We had a lab mix for 15+ years and then adopted a lab puppy in 2012 from a Lab Rescue where were living at the time. When we decided to get a companion for our now 7-year old lab we immediately thought of Lab Rescue. BIG MISTAKE! We had our interview with the adoption coordinator from Annandale office and we made the big mistake of telling her that if the weather is nice we let our lab stay outside in our fenced in yard. Our dog would rather stay outside and we had a arrangement with a family member to let him in at noon if the weather wasn't good. She said this might be a problem because of their policy, but if we promised to keep the adopted dog inside we should be OK. She even sent our reference emails. We were very excited to welcome a new member to our family. A few days later we received an email saying our application was rejected because we had a "history of leaving our dog unattended" . Even though we promised we would abide by their policy and keep the dogs inside because we understood the reasons for their policy. She was not willing to discuss the situation and made us feel like we were some kind of animal-abuse family who neglected our pets, which is hardly the case. We are experienced dog owners and would never put a dog in a dangerous situation. Instead of working with us they lost a family who would provide a loving and caring forever home. read more

We rescued our first dog 12 years ago and everything went well. However, we just rescued another dog and just got the DNA back and found out she was only 25% Lab and mixed with many other breeds. In other words, we got a mutt. This is so disappointing. We know don't know what dog we got and will have spend a lot of money training our dog. Be careful of what dog you get. They wonder why people just give up and buy from a breeder-- it's because it's so much easier to do so than adopt a dog. Application forms? Approval process? Visits? Bleh. I find it ridiculous that they won't adopt to residents of apartment complexes. You would think they would realize that many individuals in the Washington DC area live in apartments or townhomes. My apartment complex is very dog-friendly and you see many individuals out and about walking dogs of all sizes. My black lab recently passed away from cancer at 7.5 years old and I am ready to find another lab to love. Unfortunately I can't even be considered by this organization. When I adopted my current lab from LRCP 6 years ago it was very pleasant and easy experience in fact I became a volunteer with them until recently. My family decide to adopt another lab, I submitted my app in January and its has been nothing but issues and problems. Its June and I still don't have a dog. when I told the adoption coordinator I had a lab that I got from them, she refused to give us any profiles younger than 7 years old, refused any input about myself and family, having dogs for over 30 years. every dog I asked about I was denied, saying it was not a good fit for a dog and I had no fence. Im in a gated community with dog park and dog trails, what a power trip they are on. I will no longer volunteer with LRCP and if you have fenced in acres and someone to be with the dog 24 hours a day you may get lucky, depends on the adoption coordinators opinion and mood, she repeatedly insulted and disrespected me, they never been to my home or know how well we treat our pets. Long and difficult process with way to much power for the coordinator, every dog we selected she pushed back on unless the dog was over 10 years old and has many health issues ( my current dog has health issues). they are not looking out for the best interest of the dog and would rather have thee dog in a crate on a cold floor then in a home without a fence, pure power trip. Wow! I can't say enough great things about Lab Rescue of LRCP! If you are looking at adopting a Lab in the Washington DC area, this is the organization to work with. They operate off a network of dedicated volunteers to rescue labs and find them the right homes. Notice I said "right" homes, not just "new" homes. They strive to find the right match for both dog and adopter. Their screening process is pretty strict with home visits, interviews etc to help in the matching process and assure the person is ready to adopt a new member of the family. They don't stop after the match and adoption as they continue with helping in the transition to the new home and offer lots of advice, recommendations for vets, services, products etc. I worked with several rescue adoption organizations in the DC area in looking for a new dog. LRCP was far and away the best to work with. I worked with them in finding my recently adopted Lab and was impressed how dedicated the volunteers are and how hard they work to find the right fit. The volunteer adoption coordinator worked with me for nearly 2 months to find the "right one", keeping an eye out for new ones that fit what I was looking for. They were very patient during the process, understanding that finding the right match means turning down many referrals in the process. Once we found the right one, they acted right away in setting up the visit and adoption. The volunteer coordinator worked me all the way through the process after I got my new Lab, checking up every couple days, offering advice on products, services, problem areas and really just making the adoption easier. When I started having problems with a separation anxiety issue, they referred me to a dog psychologist that does free services for LRCP adopted rescues. If you are looking for Lab to adopt, this is the organization to work with. They rescue labs from all over the east coast and find them homes. Honestly, this was a total waste of time. We did the application which took a while, had a long call with one of the volunteers. We were honest about everything including that we live in a rowhouse. Apparently that is a no go and no one wanted to tell us that. Any time we asked about a dog we were told that they needed a "SFH in a rural area" despite the fact that the profiles online said nothing of the sort. Now mind you, no one had been to our house to actually see what it looked like, check out the yard and privacy fence, see that we shared a single wall which is literally 3 feet thick because the house is old and very solidly constructed and lived next to a DOG PARK...but anyway. If we found a dog that was approved for our living situation, there was some other excuse as to why the dog wasn't for us. When we did get a profile, which was rare, it was not what we asked for. For example, we got sent a profile for a 100 lb dog when we said we wanted a lab no more than about 60 lbs, we got sent a profile for a puppy when we said we wanted a senior dog, etc. I will give an extra star for the responsiveness of the volunteer who did answer all emails. But we signed up with other rescues and have had nowhere near the issues. read more

My son was trying to adopt a lab from these people. What a mess, they took the dog home, and it is a very nice dog. They have a 6-foot fence around their backyard so they didn't think it would be a problem. Well, they let said dog out in the morning to go poddy, and he jumped the fence and ran away. My son chases him down and gets him back. within less than an hour he is gone again. long story short, they figure out that they can only put him in backyard on a rope and take him for walks or runs when he needs to poddy. My son took him to dog park but he was aggressive to other dogs. The rescue says he is good with other dogs. My son hired a dog trainer to help with his aggression and behavior, and was told that the training was not suitable by lab rescue. During all this time, 2 to 3 weeks, my son has completely fell in love with this dog and has spent hundreds of dollars on him already and the dog is bonded with him too. so in comes this lab rescue and tells him that he has to sign this contract, in reality, tells him that for 325.00 that they will give him the privilage of housing, feeding, and taking care of a dog that he will never truely own. the rescue has the right to inspect his house and property for the lifetime of this dog and has all rights to tell my son what he can and cannot to with this dog for the duration of this dogs life. Well if some people want to sign a contract like that, good for them, but in my opinion they are as crazy as the people who run the rescue. I say walk, no run as far away as you can from these people. There are way better places to find a pet. Go find a pet to rescue or buy that will be your, not someone elses. read more

The most valuable piece of advice I can give concerning Lab-Rescue is to stay away from them! Not long ago on advice of a friend who was until recently a volunteer with them, my wife and I went to one of their adoption events. My wife is handicapped spends all day at home by herself. She decided she wanted a new dog to keep her company so we started looking into possibly getting a lab. I grew up with labs and this seemed like a great idea. Lab-Rescue seemed like the obvious choice. We kept track of the available dogs on their website and when one came up we had a particular interest in we decided to go to one of their events. We pre-filled out all the adoption paperwork so maybe we could take a dog home that day and if nothing else shorten the wait time if a dog we really wanted became available. So we arrive and turn in our paperwork, they gave it the once over and said everything looked good and soon we were taken away to speak with one of their case workers, She grilled us on all sorts of thing that I felt were not really important but we suffered through it and at the end of the interview she sang our praise as how we were such a great prospect for adopting. She told us they would contact our references and in the mean time we should go visit with the dogs from the event. So we went out to the visitation area in high hopes. This is where everything went south fast. Disappointedly the one dog that we really wanted to see did not show up for the event despite being listed that she would be there. We had driven nearly 100 miles to get to this event so slightly dejected we started making our way around to see the other dogs. I have rarely seen a more pathetic operation. I had there cheat sheet that had a description of each dog and as I read each one I refused to believe the descriptions were for the dogs I was now seeing in the flesh. I have been around dogs all my life especially labs and I wanted to just start crying. It was painfully obvious to me that either these people had no idea how to determine the age of a dog or were deliberately lying. One poor chocolate male was graying badly and had chronic Hip Dysplasia. He was desperate for attention and the person he was with couldn't care less that the poor dog could barely walk. He was in serious pain and actually whimpered when I lightly stroked him on his hind quarters. It hurt him but he was so desperate for love he nuzzled against me anyway suffering through it. His age was listed as being aprox 3 years old. He was at a minimum 9 or 10 and probably much older and certainly he had little time left and none of it would be what I would call a quality life. It wasn't just me that could see it, everyone walked past this poor creature. No one wanted to get involved in something that was going to be so short lived and problematic. There were many dogs with inaccurate ages but that may vary well not be the worst thing I saw that day. Dogs still undergoing treatments for all manner of ailments were there and they were happily licking the faces of young children as they and their parents visited with them. At this point my wife and I left before we saw any more. To top everything off they never once called our references and when I called, out of curiosity, about the status of our application they acted like they never heard of us. We never once said a word to them about our feelings for them and were as polite as possible to them while we were there so I don't think they lost our app on purpose but what did happen to it? It had private information on it and that's a bit of a concern to me. What of our friend who volunteers with them? Well she was denied the right to adopt a dog by them because "She worked". This after she spent nearly a year volunteering for them and even providing a foster home for at least one dog for them. This operation stinks and should probably be shut down. I have actually made several inquiries about having them investigated but no one seems to care. There is actually much more to there horror of this operation but thats all I can manage to talk about right now. I think there biggest problem is lack of knowledge and ability to mamage anything. A few people with them did seem like they knew what they were doing but most really didn't. read more

Service is terrible think twice before dealing with these people have so many cause do not know how to handle business. Your choice but others are way better out there.
