I don't say this lightly - we have five children who have attended schools all over the country and in India and Abu Dhabi. I think what Abiqua gets right is the balance between a rigorous academic program and a holistic approach to understanding and nurturing the whole child. Whether your child is on the gifted end of the spectrum, somewhere in the middle, or needing additional support - the teachers have proven time and again they will "meet your child where he or she is at." It's not just lip service - we have lived this. We have considered moving out of the Salem area several times and two factors keep us here, one of which is the extraordinary education our children are receiving at Abiqua. I wish every single school in Salem provided the same experience - all children deserve this kind of education.

On numerous occasions when picking up my child, I found them wet, cold and being neglected leading to pneumonia. When contacting the school to discuss concerns I encountered directors and staff that were dismissive, would down play my concerns and who were defensive. My experience was both disheartening, and unsettling. Following investigation into this facility I learned that they are NOT a registered school as lead to believe but instead is licensed under a child card day care facility which in my experience is very much how they operate.

My child comes home excited, proud, and full of stories about what they learned or explored that day--everything from practical life skills to creative projects and hands-on activities. What I appreciate most is the genuine warmth of the community. It feels like an extension of home. They communicate clearly, celebrate milestones big and small, and create an environment where kids feel safe, loved, and encouraged. At the Mark O.Hatfield Library main desk, staff will issue to area residents a "community borrower's card" for a yearly fee of $50. To access the campus, I always park in the visitors' lot on the east side of Winter St., close to the intersection with Pringle Parkway. The signage is confusing: parking is free for casual drop-ins only on weekends. For those from away, walk NE from the visitors' parking until you see the fountain. There is found an excellent map and you can orient yourself. The Martha Springer Botanical Garden is a few minutes' walk from the library and worth a visit. It does not show on the online map. It is the green strip north of the Sparks Center, on the south bank of the Mill Race.
