Services are friendly and informal. Lots of small groups for people to join and opportunities to serve Jesus and the community. Oh, and about that "women in ministry" thing: From it's founding in Pilot Point Texas in 1908, through the founding of McMinnville Church of the Nazarene by a woman pastor in 1911, the Church of the Nazarene has always honored and will continue to honor the pastoral gifts of women and the spirit of Anna (Luke 2:36), Junia (Romans 16:7), Priscilla (Acts 18) and recognize Paul's admonition against women pastors as applying to a particular troublesome church. We are all enriched when each faithful member of our community uses their gifts in service to the Lord and as Galatians 3:28 says, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." God has ordained that only men are to serve in positions of spiritual teaching authority in the church. This does not imply men are better teachers or that women are inferior or less intelligent. It is simply the way God designed the church to function. Men are to set the example in spiritual leadership--in their lives and through their words. We women are also to set an example in our lives, but in a different way (1 Peter 3:1-6). Women are encouraged to teach other women (Titus 2:3-5). The Bible also does not restrict women from teaching children. The only activity women are restricted from is teaching or having spiritual authority over men. This bars women from serving as pastors over men. This does not make us women less important, by any means; rather, it gives us a ministry focus more in agreement with God's design. We women have a high calling of raising a family, getting our home in order, and submitting and taking care of the needs of our Husbands. Our husbands are the head and soul of the family. We women are the heart, and together are one body as our lord designed for the family. It would be out of God's will for any woman to be a pastor. Paul says "a pastor, elder" must be the husband of one wife, not a wife of one husband. God is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow, so if Paul were going to church today, he would be saying the same thing. Men's ways change due to sin, but God doesn't.

I'm not normally a believer nor a church goer -- but my when my great uncle passed away, the…read morememorial was hosted at the church where he had been a member for many decades with his spiritual family. The building is gorgeous - and super clean and tasteful, inside and out. I went down to the basement when I arrived to offer my help setting up for the reception. I even brought vegan doughnuts which looked garish next to the wide array of home baked goodies brought in by volunteers in the community (it turned out ok - they were a hit!). The pastor is super nice -- and the service was very low key and sweet. They even record their regular services and memorials so you can listen on their website! Inside the sanctuary - it was just beautiful. Nice big high ceiling in sort of a dome/half circle shape -- the place had fantastic acoustics. There's also a LIBRARY! The library was pretty impressive - lots of Quaker history and other spiritual books, as well as a children's section -- all labeled with Dewey decimal system and a little self-service check out area! Most importantly - the people were incredibly welcoming, warm and supportive. There were many people who had known my great uncle for a long time - and they shared their memories with me, including one woman who had recently moved into to the same retirement community where my uncle had been living and who remembered meeting him when she was a little girl more than 50 years ago! I moved to Corvallis three years ago. I attend church regularly, and I was needing to find a…read morechurch that was a good match for my family and me. I went to another church in town based upon a referral, and it was ok. But the morning I walked into the Calvary Chapel, I could feel the difference. For those that are fellow believers, I will tell you that I felt the presence of the Lord right away when I walked in. Pastor Rob does a great job, preaching the word of God, not holding anything back. They do outdoor baptisms in the summer, in the outdoor church area, for anyone that wants to come and get baptized. The church has small groups and that is really how to get plugged in. The church is so large that the "intimate" settings there occur weekly fellowing in their house churches. We used to host one - for three years, until our children's sports activities have gotten so busy we had to pass the hosting to another family. Lastly, the childcare/ elementary school/ middle school/ high school programs for the youth are amazing. They poor a ton of resources into the children, and the teaching staff are dedicated and well trained. My kids love the church as much as I do, and they both have found great friends there as well. The church sends out a lot of missionaries as well; Strong out reach program. Try the church, you will be blessed!

I'm leaving this review based on my firsthand experience during a church trip and my interactions…read morewith the pastor, his wife, and the group's leadership. Before the trip, my girlfriend and I were told that we would be allowed to stay together in a tent. However, later during the trip, that arrangement changed. The pastor said he didn't want us staying in the tent because he was concerned about what might happen between my girlfriend and me. This was especially strange to me because there were four of us staying in the tent. He also made a comment implying that having other people in the tent would not have stopped him personally. Honestly, I found that comment disgusting and extremely inappropriate. Hearing a pastor make a comment like that, especially in that context, made me very uncomfortable and changed the way I viewed him as a leader. We were also threatened with being kicked out and were told we might have to get on a speedboat in complete darkness around midnight. The pastor's wife told us that the situation was becoming too dangerous and that they did not want to send their leaders out to deal with it. The way this was communicated felt extremely dismissive and hostile rather than caring about our safety. The situation became even worse when the pastor yelled at my girlfriend for around an hour and made her cry. During the argument, he called her a fake Christian. I eventually told him that he needed to apologize to her. Instead, he told me that I needed to apologize for him because he was too busy to do it himself. I found that extremely disrespectful, especially considering that he was the person who had caused the situation in the first place. The following day, the pastor's wife pulled my girlfriend aside and told her that she needed to break up with me. She called me a terrible person and a loser and told my girlfriend that she was setting herself up for failure because I was raised not Christian. I found it deeply inappropriate for church leadership to involve themselves in our relationship and attempt to influence my girlfriend into breaking up with me. There were also things I witnessed that made me uncomfortable with the way the group approached religion and fear. At one gathering, a young person was having a panic attack after speaking in front of a crowd while dealing with the loss of their parents. The pastor brought up the devil during the situation and encouraged people to reaffirm their faith because of what had happened. Given that the person was already going through a difficult and emotional moment, I felt that the situation could have been handled with more compassion and sensitivity. At another meetup, the pastor said that girls are not as close to God and that they have to speak through their man. That was another statement that I found deeply concerning and disrespectful. Overall, my experience was not one of feeling welcomed, supported, or spiritually encouraged. I experienced what felt like intimidation, public pressure, personal attacks, interference in relationships, and leadership using fear to influence people. I also left with concerns about the group being heavily focused on money, although I recognize that this is my personal impression rather than something I can prove. I'm not writing this review because I disagree with Christianity or because I expect everyone to share my beliefs. I'm writing it because of how I personally experienced the behavior of the leadership. People deserve to be treated with respect, especially when they are vulnerable or upset. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering getting involved with this church to pay close attention to how the leadership treats people who disagree with them or question their decisions.
