(Background moment: I grew up Lutheran -- and I can never really get away from it. No matter how hard I try, the liturgy and the fellowship and the really bad coffee keep calling me back.) So last December, I got nostalgic for the beautiful Advent services I attended as a kid. I Googled Lutheran churches in the area that offer them. It turns out that the conservative Missouri Synod is the only branch of local Lutherans that still do these, so I found myself at Living Savior on a Wednesday evening. Now, I am not anything that might be called conservative in a political or religious sense, so I thought it might be a little odd attending at a place where the belief structure is likely to be the polar opposite of my own. Nope. I was greeted sincerely by literally every person I encountered. Nobody was pushy, but everyone invited me to ask questions, attend on Sundays, check out the choir, etc. The pastor, a calm, confident sort of person who made me feel quite at home, made a point of talking with me after service. The service itself was Holden Evening Prayer, a modern sung liturgy that I've loved since I first encountered it years ago. If you have ever sung H.E.P, this will be a major plus point in your book. I enjoyed my experience, and I went back twice. (Then I ran out of Advent.) I still get the newsletter, and I'm not opposed to going back sometime. I'd definitely recommend Living Savior to anyone looking to attend service as a visitor or as a potential member.

I was sad to hear he went to be with the Lord not long after I left Beaverton. Glad to be back to visit and see the name change with new logo. This is still my spiritual home. Everything is still vivid and still in love with this place.

I'm not normally a believer nor a church goer -- but my when my great uncle passed away, the…read morememorial was hosted at the church where he had been a member for many decades with his spiritual family. The building is gorgeous - and super clean and tasteful, inside and out. I went down to the basement when I arrived to offer my help setting up for the reception. I even brought vegan doughnuts which looked garish next to the wide array of home baked goodies brought in by volunteers in the community (it turned out ok - they were a hit!). The pastor is super nice -- and the service was very low key and sweet. They even record their regular services and memorials so you can listen on their website! Inside the sanctuary - it was just beautiful. Nice big high ceiling in sort of a dome/half circle shape -- the place had fantastic acoustics. There's also a LIBRARY! The library was pretty impressive - lots of Quaker history and other spiritual books, as well as a children's section -- all labeled with Dewey decimal system and a little self-service check out area! Most importantly - the people were incredibly welcoming, warm and supportive. There were many people who had known my great uncle for a long time - and they shared their memories with me, including one woman who had recently moved into to the same retirement community where my uncle had been living and who remembered meeting him when she was a little girl more than 50 years ago! The liturgy is traditional but full of life and as a Presbyterian Church USA congregation they are faithful to Christ without being narrow or sectarian. I don't live in Woodburn so I don't get to visit often but I have never been disappointed. If you are looking for a place to engage your faith and lift your spirits, I suggest you need look no further.
