Kantong is a stalwart of the Everton Shopping Village. Other shops come and go, but I'm fairly sure Kantong will always be there. It is, by far, the best Chinese place in this particular northern pocket. Highlights on the menu include the curry puffs ($5.50) which are always crispy, and make the most satisfying CRUNCH noise when you bite into them. I always opt for the Beef and Black Bean ($10.00), and occasionally I'll splash out and get the sweet and sour pork ($10.00). Also, I don't know what it is about their fried rice ($5.90), but I could eat buckets of it in one sitting. For you seafood fiends out there, you'll be happy to know they have a wide range of fantastic seafood options. Hell, there's five different options for scallops alone! If you call ahead, they're good at giving you a good approximate time to come and pick it up. If you eat in, enjoy the humble and relaxed setting. I reckon almost everyone living in this pocket of the northern suburbs would have Kantong on auto dial. Best part? When we call, they know us by the sound of our voice. It was a short walk to go pick it up but I was quite surprised at how old the place looked and realized that even if I wanted to eat there I couldn't due to the lack of seating. The service was good and a friendly old Chinese lady handed me the food. I must say that out of the 2 within walking distance Pekin was the best. I do not usually go to Aspley Oriental for the dinner menu however - I go for Yum Cha! Yummm cha!! The lovely little dumplings and mango pancakes that come rolling past on cute little trolleys send my tastebuds into a frenzy! I love the prawn gow gees, the pork and peanut dumplings and the vegetarian spring rolls. On the downside, the manager sits Westerners and Chinese in different areas and the Chinese area gets priority, sometimes all the good things are gone or cold which is quite annoying. Aspley Oriental is probably the most expensive Yum Cha restaurant I have been too which is also a bit of a bummer. It is best to go on the weekends as there is much more variety, you do have to wait outside for a while though unfortunately. The food is good though, and worth the wait.

All of these characteristics evoke within me fond childhood memories. For this reason (and this reason alone) I regularly eat in at my local Chinese restaurant, Albany Court. The food is good but nothing to write home about - I usually order King Prawn with Cashews, it's pretty tasty but you don't get a lot of prawns. It does kind of annoy me that it is so much more expensive to dine in than it is to take-away. The best thing about Albany Court is that it has all of the classic Chinese restaurant characteristics listed above and more, this is why I will keep going back!

True story. So being fans of the Thai cuisine, I was out to search for a mean Pad Thai, my weakness. Always with chicken. Amazing Thai sits perfectly on the corner of Samford and Gaythorne road. The owner is this cute little Thai lady who really does do everything. There are a few wait staff sometimes, but the shop isn't that big and they can get away with just 1 or 2 extras on busy nights. The Money Bags in this place was my first experience. The water chestnuts, the minced chicken meat, the crunchy fresh ingredients wow. Then we had the Pad Thai, a Green Curry with Chicken and a Beef Stirfry. There is a difference between throwing things into a mess together and frying them at a high heat to throwing the ingredients at the right times to make the perfect flavour and combination. Amazing Thai do serve amazing food. The food tastes fresh, tastes quality and tastes like Thailand. You can usually get a table here, but on a busy night, try making a booking first as the restaurant only seats a small amount of people. True to their name, gold star all the way.

The drinks were made from scratch and were refreshing and scrumptious! I loved the Lychee twist and Lemon Lime and Bitters. Service was friendly and attentive, making this restaurant a good alternative to Sunnybank where service is an afterthought (and often feels like taking a trip to Timbuktu). This restaurant is a great addition to the Northside culinary scene and I expect this eatery to become more popular as time goes by.

All the meals available at Golden Li are pre-cooked and are on display in a buffet-fashion. All your favourite Chinese dishes are available; Mongoian Beef, Fried rice, and Garlic Chicken are all available as well as vegetarian options. These dishes are really cost effective too; a small will set you back $7.90 and a large- $8.90.The dishes taste like typical greasy Chinese. This makes it not the best dinning option for any health conscious types. Another good thing about Goden Li is that they have awesome 'End of Day" specials; if you come here at around 5.00pm, they have a '3 takeaway containers for $10' deal, great if you have a few people to feed when you get home. Golden Li do not serve the finest Chinese food in town but you can't beat the location and the price.
