Laird and Son was on time and started to get to work right away. They started to dig the front in order to bring this 3/4 inch water pipe inside the house. As they installed the new AC and emergency shut off AC Voltage panel was installed outside it was only one person that did that. It shows how professional they are. They cleaned up all their mess. Nothing worse than having your furnace break late on a Friday night. I spent hours calling around to a number of different companies trying to see if I could get someone to come in and fix my furnace. Most places were too busy, or only serviced their "valued customers" which is great, if you're used to having a broken furnace, I suppose. I on the other hand had had no furnace issues before, and as such this was all new to me. Luckily I was able to get Laird and Son on the line. Their late night tech, rather than saying it would be $200.00 to come out and check out what the problem is (like many of the companies I called) helped me debug the issue over the phone, and even tried to see if it was something I could solve for free - like a flame rod that needed cleaning. Turned out to be the igniter that had cracked, and he told me he could get the part by Monday. This wasn't ideal, but it was similar to what other people were saying. (Protip: don't have your furnace break on the weekend.) He got back in touch with me the next day, and told me that he had the part and could actually be out before noon on Saturday. No 4 hour window, just "you want me to come by? Alright, see you in 45 minutes." He had the part replaced, and went through a number of other tests. There was no upselling, and the quote he gave me before coming over was the price I paid. Turned out to be $350+HST (a bit more than the $250 quotes I received - but they didn't try to help me out over the phone, and who knows what upselling that would have led to - but MUCH LESS than the $1100 quote other companies set out for the same job.) The customer service couldn't be beat, and the guy who came out to help me out answered all my questions. I went from knowing nothing about furnaces, to being pretty aware of what's going on, and I am now able to debug and fix a few things on my own in the future. Amazing experience. read more

I purchased a furnace from them along with installation. The furnace came with a 5-year warranty and Laird and Son offered, quoted and sold the furnace based on a 10-year warranty (5-year bonus). The 10-year warranty was quoted, written in the invoice and paid for, however, it required that the furnace be registered with the manufacturer within 60 days of the installation. This, like other rebates and paperwork, L&S said that THEY would take care of doing it all. Six years later when a part is needed under warranty, as I found out after calling the manufacturer, L&S failed to register the furnace with the manufacturer within 60 days of installation, and so the furnace warranty was only for the standard 5 years. Of course, L&S wants nothing to do with this anymore because I chose to not use them for the maintenance. And, the extended warranty did not even apply to labour because that required me signing-up for a separate, multi-hundred dollar maintenance contract only with L&S each and every year without interruption). That's negligence on L&S' part that penalizes and costs only the customer. The manufacturer won't honour the 10-year warranty because they stand to sell more equipment, and L&S stands to have another installation.....well, not with me. If it wasn't for a perpetually growing city where losing a client doesn't mean much to a company, these companies would have to be a lot more professional and fight harder to retain customers and their satisfaction. Laird and Son have provided exemplary furnace service and fuel oil deliveries to my parents for many years. Recently, my mother decided to convert to natural gas. Sales manager Ron Potter provided a competitive, detailed quote, and was most helpful in explaining how to deal with the gas utility. When installation day rolled around, the team were competent, professional, hard-working, and a pleasure to have working in the house, They left the site spotless, took time to explain things to my elderly mother, and patiently answered all our questions. The furnace and hot water heater work perfectly, the oil tank/furnace/HW unit were removed with no mishaps, and all the holes in the foundation (e.g., oil delivery piping) were insulated and cemented. Laird will continue to have our business for maintenance and repairs, even though they are no longer supplying oil. It's great to have a locally-owned company providing such good service. read more

Good Service - SLOPPY WORK After a 4 service calls and series of errors with the installation of a brand new air conditioner.. (that we also had to work on ourselves); I was then sent an additional bill of over $200 for furnace service! The air conditioner works now and the air flow is 5x stronger than after the installation. It seems the reason for the air conditioner not working was the blocked furnace motor filter. In the contract it stated specifically that the installers were to check the furnace motor and associated parts. The reason I bought a new air conditioner was because the furnace was not working properly apparently because of dusty/blocked air condensing unit. I'm surprised the installers wouldn't have known instantly that the air conditioner was not working properly when it was installed because of the difference in airflow was massive. I would like to highlight some other areas of concern that we had. Issues #1 - The air filter was installed incorrectly causing it to be sucked into the fan motor stopping the motor and destroying a new filter. Issue #2- The plenum was not taped properly and air was escaping. It almost looked like new tape was not used. We had to re-tape it. Issue # 3 - During the installation we heard "pop" from the installer cutting a live electrical wire. Assuming it was the air conditioner wire I thought nothing of it. After future inspection the wire was for an outside plug and it was left live on the ground and never repaired. All of the follow up service calls that were extremely disruptive to my wife with our 2 month old baby. I went with Laird & Sons over the competitors because I believed we were going to be provided with quality workmanship. Issues were brought up with the company but no one really seem concerned with the SLOPPY WORK. It should be noted that all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. However everyone was always in such a rush to do the bare minimum work and move. Additional cost to our family was about $60 for the wrecked air filter, cut electrical wire and ductwork tape --plus 4 service calls to get a brand new air conditioner unit to work. Oh and don't forget the "additional bill" of over $200 for a furnace cleaning. read more

I wanted to let some time pass before I wrote this review - 1) to see if we have any immediate problems with our new AC, and 2) to see how post-install service would be. We purchased our new AC unit from Laird & Sons and had it installed by them as well. From our first contact with them to set up a sales appointment, to now, 3 weeks post installation, Laird & Son has been incredible. We had our sales appointment with Ron. He was on time, personable, and knew his products, just as you would expect from a good sales person. The appointment was very relaxed and we didn't feel pressured to purchase. He explained all of our options to us, gave his recommendation when we asked, and told us to take some time to think about it and give him a call when we were ready. He also took a look at our furnance and told us that we didn't need to replace it at all! Great news for us as the Direct Energy rep had insisted we replace it right away. We called Ron about 3 days later and asked to book an installation date. It's obvious that this company is organized and has great communication among themselves, as Kim from head office contacted us right away and set up a time. 2 weeks later Dave and his partner came to install our unit. They were so respectful of our home and courteous and did a magnificent job installing the unit and spent all day troubleshooting our electrical situation. They identified the problem and coordinated with head office to send out a technician to finish the electrical work the next day. Again, I was informed when the tech would arrive, and Bryan rang my doorbell the next day, on time. Bryan was very personable, and also very considerate of my home. He cleaned everything up right away and put things back the way they were. He did a fantastic job getting our electrical connected to the thermostat so our AC could begin cooling our house. The next day, I called head office and spoke to Kim. Gave her our payment details and within a few days, our invoice along with the details of our extended warranty arrived. Earlier this week I tried to register our AC unit for the warranty but was having a bit of trouble, so I contacted Laird and Son again. Jackie explained that they register for the extended warranty for all their customers since some do not have access to computers or may not know how to do such things online. How brilliant and what a time saver for me! Bottom line, Laird & Son are true professionals - earnest, trustworthy, efficient, and organized, with great customer service. I plan to use them for our yearly maintenance and duct cleaning and would not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends! P.S. They also contacted me with a promo for HVAC duct cleaning. I explained that I had it done last year and inquired if I needed it done on a yearly basis - they were honest and said I wouldn't need it for another couple of years. It was an interesting first experience with this company. I called for a water leak when running the air-conditioner. They gave me a quote over the phone for the inspection and repair. The tech arrived and told me it needed a service/cleaning and there was nothing wrong. He charged me about $20 less than what was quoted on the phone. We discussed it and he was sure that was the charge for a service call and there was no repair needed. After he left and the air-conditioner was turned on, it leaked again. So I called back. A second visit was scheduled at no additional cost. I wasn't advised to keep the unit running so the tech could see the problem, and since we did not want to deal with water problems and rust, we had it turned off. On the scheduled day, the tech arrived and said there was nothing he could do, since he couldn't see the water leak, and he left. I told him I could turn it on and he'd see the problem in under 10 mins, but he wasn't going to stay and wait. He told me to call the emergency number if it happens again. So we then called back to schedule a third appt. and turned on the air-conditioner about an hour before the tech arrived. Finally the third tech was able to find and fix the problem! The time we spent and the hassle was a bit much, but I would use them again, only because they took ownership of what they did wrong and did not keep charging for each trip, and they were pleasant to deal with. read more

Laird and Son has served us and our family members well for many years, and we have enjoyed getting to know them over the years. They faithfully serve and then when you need them, they are there! Like this winter our boiler furnace quit while we were on holiday. The house went down to 40 degrees before it was noticed. Our daughter called Laird, and Brian came right over, followed by a procession of calls and further technician visits for a six-years-new boiler furnace that wouldn't stop shutting down and had to be replaced. So we replaced it with a recommended model with a better track record, which was installed by Ari, who Brian assured us was their best installer. It then needed some tweaking which was done by Mac to perfection. It was such a comfort knowing that we had such a long term relationship with Laird and we could count on them being there when we needed them! Thanks to each and every one of them who has serviced our boiler and AC over the years. Had to replace our hot water tank not because it wasn't working perfectly (which it was) but because our insurance company declared it too old and refused to renew our house policy unless it was replaced. So basically I was trying to satisfy insurance company bureaucracy for minimal cost. The first company I called, which, like Laird & Son, had a very high google rating, tried to up-sell me to a $12,000+ replacement of not only the boiler, but our furnace and central air, saying that it was on its last legs. By contrast, Laird & Son gave me a phone quote of $2,200 to replace the boiler. When their sales manager, Ron Potter, came out to inspect our equipment, he said that there was no need to replace the furnace or air conditioner at all, and came in with a quote for the boiler replacement that was even lower that the phone quote. The Laird & Sons technicians were polite and efficient. They replaced our boiler in less than two hours, and I saved more than $10,000 by going with Laird & Sons rather than being up-sold by their competitor, who were neither "Accurate" nor particularly "Service" oriented in my opinion. read more

After three visits you finally solved the issue which was a blocked vent, the furnace was working ...the first guy should have had the smarts to look at the vent day one. Our problems did not end though. It was leaking water like crazy next few days. My husbamd had to open it up and found filter was not installed correctly and a hose was not reconnected...it was just left hanging. Husband connected the hose himself to stop the leak and we had to dry out the furnace room. read more

When we had emergency during big Toronto freeze and our heat went down they said they could not help us because they do not fix radiators, despite the fact that the boiler was bought from them and paying for yearly maintenance agreement. We were forced to contact another company who discovered the problem was with the boiler. When we called Laird & Son to fix boiler they said the could no longer service it because another company had performed work on it. Unprofessional on phone (rude) Did not honor warranty on boiler purchased from Laird & Son because company relocated to states. We had to go with another company because they would not help us. Its almost criminal. In fact it probably is. read more
