Lake Balboa park or just Balboa Park as locals call it, is one of my favorite parks in the San Fernando Valley. It's a large, well-kept recreational area in the Sepulveda Basin with a beautiful lake for fishing and pedal boating, plus tons of walking and biking paths. You'll always see people walking their dogs, having BBQs, celebrating kids' birthdays, or just enjoying the outdoors. This park means a lot to me because it's been around for as long as I can remember. I grew up coming here with my family, and now as an adult, I still come back regularly--mostly to get a solid run in. I usually do about a 5-mile loop around the park and nearby streets along Woodley, Burbank, Balboa, and Victory. It's especially nice in the spring when the cherry blossoms are blooming. Overall, it's a classic Valley spot and a great place for all ages.

Such a beautiful park to enjoy nature; from stunning mountain scenery to a beautiful lake which provides habitat to exceptional wildlife including mallards, geese, pelicans, herons, and coots. There is a paved path around the lake which makes this one of my favorite places to enjoy a leisurely walk especially in springtime when cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

There's a lot of ducks there.

First time I went, I went to go meet up with a photographer who was going to help me learn to use a camera and I said, to myself, I gotta come back here with my family, so I did. I went on a weekday and found peace there even though there were people there, I think they went to for the same reason, but on the weekends it get packed. I would give it a 5 but the bathrooms aren't that clean. Otherwise it's a nice place.

Love it you can find here all you need. Big lake, trails, kids playgrounds. You can also have a picnic or buy something in park markets. A lot of parking spaces

Beautiful, clean park that offers something for all ages. Was surprised people fish there. The lake is just over a mile and a leisurely stroll. Also has hiking and biking trails. Bikes and swan paddle boats can be rented. The lovely roofed benches adorned with twisting branches and lavender-colored blooms enhance this respite feel from the city. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. I saw garbage on the ground with a trash can nearby- show some respect, not indifference! I saw minimal graffiti around the lake. There can be a lot of duck feces on the walking path. Bigger cherry blossom trees are on the car path as you enter the park.

It was a beautiful day for a walk. Portions of the path were a little muddy and some areas were flooded due to the recent rains. But we didn't mind at all. Enjoyed this walk very much

    A very pretty lake

When you're in the sprawling metropolis of L.A. you crave serene open parks like Lake Balboa. It's a great place to go walking, ride a bike, rent a paddle boat or have a picnic. You'll see people walking their dogs, taking their kids to the playground or going for a run. There are plenty of benches and spots to relax. The lake is full of ducks and other water birds. The only thing I didn't love were all of the pesky gnats! There were some vendors around but I didn't look too closely at what they were selling. If I lived here I'd take walks here to escape suburbia and enjoy nature.

Such a beautiful park with so many things in nature to admire. I love coming here just to walk around or visit some food trucks that are there. There are restrooms and so many things to do. They offer Swan boats that you can take out onto the lake.

So so beautiful. I absolutely LOVE this park. But please please please something needs to be done about the homeless. This is getting BAD.

Spring is in the air. New hatching strolling along the road.

It's spring and it's blooming seasons. The wisteria are starting come into full blooms which makes a beautiful walk around the lake. I also noticed that there were loads of new trees planted in the front entrance grassy knoll area. The park is green from all the rain we've received so enjoy it now before it gets too hot and all dried up. I didn't see much of any new duckling this year. They tend to always have the around in the lake but none so far. Still a nice place for a picnic, exercise, fishing or a quality time with family.

The unspoken Echo Park. This park is so underrated and not ever talked about which is a shame because this park is a great place to retreat, bbq, picnic, or just be outside. So much green open field area to picnic, run, and walk. It's probably the biggest park I have been to. Bike and pedestrian walkways are accessible. I saw many people fly fishing to my surprise and seen a couple of fish jump out of the water. *Duck, geese, pigeon, swan city! Birds everywhere! They are cordial and are not aggressive from what I have observed. *Bike rentals and swan boats are available! *I took off only star because I had a great experience though there are some definite improvements to be made. As an entirety, it is maintained enough but some parts need some TLC (tender loving care) -Trash from vendors, and random hygiene products on the ground. -Bird poop aggregated at a section of flooring that made it unwalkable. ALOT of bird feathers shedding everywhere -Water was beautiful but not clean and saw someone washing themselves by the lake. Lifeguard on duty warned fishermen's that the bacteria in the water is high. -More shading options around the lake would be nice as some benches didn't have shade. I would come here again as the parking is free, the park is wide open, and it's not a far out drive!

Ask the Community - Lake Balboa/Anthony C. Beilenson Park

    Is there free parking i?

Yes, there is a lot as well as street parking that was plentiful and free!

How much does the swan boat thing cost?

It's per hour and believe it was 18-20 bucks if I recall and that's more than enough time out there it's tiring.

Are we allowed to barbecue in Lake balboa if we bring our own tools and stuff?

    Yes

What kind of food can you bring to feed the ducks or do they sell it there?

They don't and you're not suppose to feed them.

Is it ok to grill on this park?

The only area I've seen it happen is around the lake area.

    What time do they close?

    It's sunrise to sunset.

    Can you swim?

No you cannot swim in the lake

Is riding a scooter allowed at the park?

    Yes

Have the cherry blossoms started to bloom yet? Thanks!

Yes. March/April is the time to go.

    Are cherry blossoms blooming?

Yes. March/April is the time to go.

Where is the best entrance/place to park to get closest to the lake?

Both entrance will take you to the lake. Balboa entrance is closer to the playground and parking is Alonso along the road as well as lots throughout the park. All near the lake.

Does anyone know when the best time is to see the cherry blossoms in bloom?

Yes. March/April is the time to go.

    Is picnic allowed during covid19?

Yes, idk honestly if it'a "allowed" or not but people, including myself have been doing it for a couple months already.

    Are the swan boats open?

Yes, I saw people using them (mid-September)

Do they have an outdoor volleyball court?

No there are no volleyball courts

Are tents allowed at this park?

I don't know the official rule however have seen some day time tents set up

Is the park open amidst the Covid-19 situation?

Yes it is. The playground is not though. It is taped off with caution tape.

With covid-19 is the park still open?

Yes, the playground is tapped off and closed. But your still able to park and walk around the lake. Just practice safe distancing.

Is there a bounce house permit fee, if so how much is it?

You have to go thru the city for the rental

Can I put a bounce house up in the park?

Yes, I see those regularly at this park. But you have to arrive extremely early in order to get a good spot where the ground is level.

There are metered spots all around the perimeter, but they were all taken. I ended up driving a block away and parking in front of an elementary school at a curb that's for pick up and drop off only during the school week. The park is about medium size. There's a tennis court, basketball court, a playground, tables and benches, and open grassy areas scattered with trees for shade. For the festival there were a few food trucks on the street, but you really didn't need to buy anything as long as you were willing to wait in a long line for a free pretzel, ice cream, and bottle of water. Just make sure to check in at one of the tables first where they'll ask you for your name and email and then give you tickets for the pretzel and ice cream and then you can get in line. One person is allowed to ask for multiple tickets for their family. The festival is kid centric, like the entertainment on stage were kids dancing and the live music was also aimed at kids. One song had lyrics that sounded like "Simon Says". There were also several tents that had a bunch of freebies like stickers and potato bag clips and even a booklet of the U.S. Constitution, which makes sense since a lot of the booths were promoting various local politicians. There's an onsite bathroom by the basketball courts, but beware that it's not the cleanest, but it's a public bathroom, so of course it isn't. If you have kids, this festival was made for you. If you don't, you can still enjoy the freebies, but it's not really something you'd want to stay around long for.

There's plenty of grass for kids to run around, toss a ball, or just roll out a blanket for a picnic. The playground is solid, clean, safe, and usually full of families in the afternoons. I like that there's enough shade from the trees so you're not baking in the sun the whole time (which is a big deal in the Valley). What I appreciate most is how relaxed the vibe is. It's not overly crowded or chaotic like some bigger parks in LA. You'll see people walking their dogs (on leash), neighbors chatting, and kids practicing soccer. There are also tennis courts and a community center, which makes it feel like a true local hub. Parking is usually pretty manageable, especially compared to other parks in Los Angeles. Bathrooms are basic but generally kept in decent shape. Overall, Encino Park is simple, clean, and family-friendly. It's not flashy, but it's dependable and sometimes that's exactly what you want in a neighborhood park.

It wasn't until a year later that Pat called me telling me my name had come up on the list. By then, I was forced to give away most of plants - it was heartbreaking. At that time, I was relocating to North Hollywood, so the Garden Center was going to be a lot closer to where I lived. I really missed my plants and wanted to start gardening again, so I said why not. The cost was $25 per plot per year. The cost to rototil was $5, which was an option I chose to save me time preparing the soil. Pat will start you at one plot 1st. But if you show you are a responsible steward, she will offer you up to 2 more plots. I got lucky and all my 3 plots are adjoining. It's really a great bargain, because you can use as much water as you want and they offer free use of garden tools and mulch. To be considered a responsible gardener and neighbor, you must weed regularly and take care of your plants. Warning: this is a lot harder than it sounds, especially in the hot summer months when the weeds grow like crazy. You must be in decent shape to keep of with the rigors of up keeping a garden. If you leave your garden plot untended, you'll eventually receive a warning letter from Pat. I actually wish she were more draconian with the rules, because some neighbors just ignore there plots, resulting in beds full of weeds that spread seeds (and baby weeds) to neighboring plots. You can grow a wide variety of vegetables, dwarf fruit trees and flowering plants. Tomatoes, artichokes, cantaloupes, eggplant, peppers, pumpkin, beans, cucumbers, strawberries, etc. do very well. I plant some vegetables, but my main focus is flowering plants. While it's not a true park, families will have get togethers here. They will tend to their plots first, and then have a picnic at the shaded tables and seats at the center of the garden. Besides the large waiting list, the downside to having a plot is that once in awhile, there are thieves who will steal your fruits or veggies or even little statues and such that you use to decorate your plot with. So don't put any item you value too much in your plot, and regularly check up on it. The thieves are less likely to disturb the plots that are well maintained. Some gardeners put up tall fences, but it ends up making the place look like a prison. And many of these gardeners end up putting more effort into their fences and gates, than they do their actual garden. Nothing is sadder than looking at a plot that is fenced in and filled with weeds. The other downside is the garden center closes by 3 PM. They open at 7 AM, so best time is to come early. If you like to party on weekend nights, the garden center's operating hours might not be a good fit for you. I've recently moved to West LA, but still make the trek up to Encino most Saturday mornings to tend to my plots. Even though the 405 freeway is right beside the garden center, I often feel like I have been transported to someplace more rural. It's a nice reminder that Los Angeles was once an agricultural city. This is my antidote to the hustle and bustle of city life.

On the opposite side of woodley, you have the archery park and cricket park. This is more of a nature hike if you call it. There's paths that take you around the lake. Which is small and more wildlife. A lot of the trees have started to grow back from a fire that happened a while back. There's still loads of remnants of the burned up trees and shrubs but plenty of new growth. You could take a hike around the lake. Path also goes through a tunnel that will take you to the other side of Burbank with more trails. Nothing major, it's more of an easier trail. Along the lake, there's rest spots that overlooks the water with signs that tells about the wildlife that calls the place home. Every now and then, you'll see some sort of wildlife popping in and out of the water and from the shrubs. If it's a quieter place that your looking for. This place will definitely be nice for you. You could also walk along the top of the embankment that's along the freeway which will connect you back to the park. There's plenty of parking in the park area.

It's close to home and offers a lot of activities to do. It has children's playground equipment, 2 basketball courts, 4 BIG, tennis courts, a dirt track, clean bathrooms, picnic area, nice spacious landscape and the most important, it's kept nice and clean. This park is one of my favorite parks in Studio City. They have recreation areas and can let you sign up for sports/classes that interests you. Recently, I had taken few classes with couple of their teachers/coaches and they are WONDERFUL! Earlier this morning I went to play tennis with one of my friends. Tennis is one of my favorite sports to watch and to play. We don't keep score. We just like to play and have fun. You can walk, jug, people walk their dogs, kids, they have picnic areas and do a lot of kids birthday parties.. or you can just simply sit in silence and enjoy nature, the sunlight and have a good, peaceful time. Private lot parking, or street nearby parking. They are closed on Sundays. Kind of weird, but it's their rules, not mine. That's when people usually spend time with their families. I am not going to dock a star for that since it meets all the other amenities & requirements.
