A beautiful state park, with gated entry and paid use. The parking area is large and likely packed in peak months of summer. We were pleased to find picnic tables where our small group could enjoy our packed lunches with water views. We come here every year, but this time the sprinklers at two of our sites were leaking and flooded our areas twice. The rangers "take care of it," but it comes back. Also, the wooden picnic tables are warped and have splitting edges. The tops have chunks of woods sticking out so we couldn't use one of them. Unfortunately, this is my first ever negative review. The check-in process was incredibly disappointing due to the rude and unprofessional behavior of the staff. I had booked a site online for my rooftop tent and two people. The website sent me a receipt confirming the site number, but when I arrived, the check-in lady accused me of lying about my booking. She was extremely rude and insisted I hadn't done what I said, despite me showing her the receipt on my phone. She dismissively said she knew nothing about the receipts(weird), gave me a dirty look, and stared at me like a middle schooler--very immature and seemed to be on a power trip. This interaction completely ruined the camping experience. On a positive note, the fellow campers were super friendly. My son and I were invited to sit with two groups, and it was a highlight of the trip. The sites are very close together, about 10-15 feet apart, but the location in downtown Chelan is awesome. Lake Chelan State Park is the first campground I have explored in a long time where tent camping appeared to be the predominant form of camping. Everywhere else, RV's, or campers, seem to dominate tent campers 5 to 1. In Lake Chelan's case, this may be because there did not appear to be as many full hookups for electricity, and whatever other form of utility RVers use to further disguise the fact that they are in nature and not a motel near the lake. Based on my experience in other campgrounds, a lack of hookups generally means that RV campers, dependent on extensive amounts of electricity to enjoy a weekend in nature, will blast their 1995 generator throughout the day, leaving everyone in the campground wondering if they had set up their tent by the lake or next to a powerplant. One way or another Lake Chelan has successfully evaded this nuisance, or at least for the hour that my wife and I explored the park. The weather was overcast and partially rainy the first day my wife and I explored the park. Surprisingly, this did not deter the campers. In our short tour of the park there were very few empty campsites. We walked down to the lakefront to see the rocky beach and crystal-clear water. Off in the distance the clouds obscured the tops of the mountains. It had a very distinct Washington feel to it. A week later we drove through the area again with additional family members on a sunny day. South of the park, looking north, the snowcapped peaks are visible. Fortunately, I was not driving the second time and could 360 degree pivot my head to enjoy the sights. I have learned on other trips that this is not advisable if you are the one driving. Don't text and drive and don't drive through beautiful natural landscapes. You will be looking at the mountains instead of the road. Returning my thoughts to the park, it is certainly a park I would love to explore again, for camping, fishing, and general exploring of the area. read more

I have been here several times but only for a day use. I can't comment on their camping area. The park is easy to find. You can't miss it. There's also ample parking for your car as well as your truck and trailer. I do recommend coming early though as it does fill up fast. You do need a discovery pass to park here or pay the day fee. The boat launch is two lanes and goes rather quickly unless you're in front of someone who doesn't know-how to back up a trailer. Lake Chelan is a natural lake and is about 50 miles long. It has a shore length of 109 miles. Some areas of the lake can be quite choppy depending on the wind so be careful. I've taken my paddle board here several times. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive from where I live but very well worth it. The water is much warmer during the summer months. There are many beach areas to take off on. There are quite a few people swimming. There are swimming areas roped off specifically for that. Perfect for the little kids. In the more shallower areas, the water is clear. You can and will see fish swimming about and they may even nibble at your toes. We've also launched a boat here and the dock area is clean. Brace those sea legs! The restrooms are decent. Both men and women's restrooms have showers inside. The women's has a separate shower area, changing area, and bathroom stalls. Keep in mind, this area is a 10-mile drive away from the City of Chelan. After a whole day in the water, right outside of the exit, there is a decent bar to hang out and relax. read more

My friends and I stayed at Lake Chelan State Park last year during our annual camping trip. We recently visited this lake this past weekend while camping at Alta Lake State Park (30-40 min drive from Chelan). I had such a positive experience from our stay at Lake Chelan that I would probably come back each year. PROS: Campsite: Many campsites available but they get booked up very quickly so plan ahead. Our campsite was very shaded so that was a nice break from the sun. Each campsite is equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table. A water faucet was nearby. Concession stand available. They pretty much sell anything that you would need. They also sell ice cream, drinks and some hot foods as well. Their prices are a little high but you are paying for convenience. Lake: Large lake with many docks and activities. I've seen people boating, fishing and swimming. The water is very clear but very cold! Very busy with families and kids. Park: Large park nearby the lake with a volleyball court. Great for picnics, sun tanning and just simply hanging out. The park is in good condition. Bathrooms available with showers. CONS: Water: Even though the water is very clean it is very rocky. Water shoes are recommended. Bathroom: Very old and dirty bathrooms! Last year there were no hand soap. I don't know if that is still an issue. TIPS: Shower tokens have to be purchased through the ranger station. Discover pass required. read more

Clear Waters! PRO: Lake Chelan water is very clear! There's tons of fish there to catch & a great place to swim, boat or jet ski. Just make sure to fish early in the morning and in the evening because in the afternoon they don't bite. The campsite has a concession stands that sells basically everything you need, even water toys but its more spender than your local store since it is at the campground. They have slurpees, ice, wood, coffee, snacks, and a variety of ice-cream to chose from. Just don't expect any of it to be cheap. Walmart is about 18miles down the road. =) The beachsite is pretty secluded and has a great view of the beach/lake at your site. Our place (site 39) was surrounded by trees which helped make it secluded because it was right next to a very busy trail. The roads are paved and the park is clean. Great play ground for the kids and fun for them to bike around. CON: We had access to the "beach," from our campsite. We got site 39 and it's fairly secluded but a lil' ways down from where we parked. I wasn't too impressed w/the campground because my site did not have a water faucet nor was the bathroom nearby. When we made our reservation it stated that it had water hookup, but that's not necessarily true cuz its not AT your site and you have to walk a little ways to find/locate it. The faucet i found is in a common area so everyone gets to use it, which is fine with me. I just wished it was a lot closer. Another thing about the beach/lake site is that the area was surrounded by big rocks, so its pretty dangerous for younger kids to be climbing around there without supervision. It is not that easily accessible due to the rocks surrounded the lake. The noise at night was an issue. Apparently quiet time is suppose to be down by 10pm, but ppl were still being very rowdy around 1am. I was sorta annoyed by it because we had very young kids (my 5 yrs old nephews) with us & the vulgarity of their language was not appropriate for them to hear. The bathroom there seriously needs updated. There's only one shower per bathroom & two sinks. Thank goodness there was a family room on each side cuz the line was amazingly long. Make sure you bring hand soap, because the park does not provide it for you in the bathroom. Also, the water in the bathroom runs cold. You got to purchase tokens to shower (3mins per token) at the park office. The shower needs updating too...scary floors. It does provide hot water though. If you get an RV site, do not expect any privacy. The sites are literally side by side and there is hardly any privacy. I am very thankful that we got a regular site because i do not care for everyone to be in my business. Our firepit was filled w/ashes & garbage. The camp host or someone should have cleared it out for the next person. I probably won't come back here again. I think the Cons outweight the Pros. If they updated their bathroom, provided hand soap in the bathroom, didn't charge to get a hot shower and provided water faucet closerby than i probably would have had a better time. It was just hard to walk two small kids to wash their hands or take them to the bathroom. Plus, the rocks by the lake made it dangerous for them to get near the river and so i was constantly on rock-alert to make sure they weren't trying to climb it. Not a bad place to camp and not too far from town! Easy to make your camping reservations online, we were able to get a night in during Labor Day weekend as we had originally made a booking a few weeks before and had to cancel due to the hazardous air quality (smoke) conditions. I was thrilled they refunded and had availability over Labor Day. The bathrooms were clean, there's showers too, and the lake is nearby. There's a large grassy area and play area for kids. The only bummer for us was we saw availability for the night before our reservation, but the website and staff do not allow you to make same-Day reservations...I didn't want to risk driving 3 hours to not have a place reserved...highly recommend, as it's quiet, affordable (we paid $33 a night to sleep in a tent), and about a 10 minute drive into town. read more

I absolutely LOVE this state park! Chelan is breathtaking enough and this camp ground compliments it well. I've been twice! My first trip as a kid was so enjoyable I begged my friends for years to come! The second time around I was with a small group of friends. Like most camp grounds I expected small compacted sites. Our site was surprisingly quite big for our party! We did have close neighbors but with the size of our sites it wasn't our problem! Close to the town and easy to get to! They have access to a beach as well! The water is clear as can be and so clean looking! Be aware that the beach is not sand. When walking into the water it is rocks so wear water shoes or get on your water tubs quick! The also have a snack bar! Rangers were friendly! This park is awesome! We camped here with family and friends for memorial day weekend 2013. I think our group literally took up a quarter of the park! The park is very spacious and clean. There weren't any creepers or 'suspicious' people around which was a huge plus. We also wanted some family time and were hoping not to have issues with the 'parting' college kids, which we didn't run into at all. I actually think our group was the loudest group, lol. We really enjoyed our stay and definitely know we will be here for future holidays. My recommendation is to get reservations ahead of time and to wake up early to claim s good common area. read more

If you're coming here from the western part of the North Cascades park, don't bother making the 2+ hour drive here unless you're gonna swim or go boating. This lake does not even remotely compare to any of the more pristine lakes in the national park; it's overcrowded and heavily commercialized and feels more like Seattle or LA than a place where you can enjoy nature by the lake. If you're from a big city, just stay at home and pick a local lake with swimming or boating rather than go through this trouble, not to mention the $10 entrance fee. read more

Clark W. Griswold would love Lake Chelan State Park. The good: lots of restrooms in reasonable condition, although bustling with activity you don't feel cramped too much, there's a concessionaire that serves hot food 'til 10PM if your cooking stinks (though their morning lattes they serve are not great... but hey! it's CAMPING!) Hot/warm showers are 50 cents for 3 minutes. The views of the lake are incredible. Lots of paved roads through RV/tent camping area to ride your bike around (I couldn't find the "real" trails during our 3 day/ 2 night stay). The bad: in the summer it is HOT and you crave the shade. Hanging out on the beach and lake does the trick but bring plenty of heavy duty sunscreen -- that sandy feeling on your back isn't sand, it's a 2nd degree burn! @#!$#@%! The late evenings and overnights can get too cold for some (I would guess cools to 50-60 degrees from a 80-90 degree daytime high). Bring your sweats! The ugly: dusty as a mo-fo! The dust is so fine it gets everywhere! Since you're sweaty a lot, you can't get away from being dirty all the time. It is so fine, it gets into every pore and crease in your skin. If you're trying to keep kids clean -- fughetaboutit at Chelan! Also, I found earwig bugs that hitched a ride home with me in my bags where I packed my clothes and blankets. during the whole trip I only got one bug bite though... but I used some Off insect repellent product most of the time. More positive stuff not to overlook and other advice: This area is mostly far enough away from major light pollution to allow you to see the stars at night. My friends and I had an awesome experience realizing we could see the Milky Way. Quite humbling when you realize what appears to the naked eye as a faint smear of white light is uncountable billions of stars. Kind of an easy and quick drive to Lake Chelan, especially the 70 MPH stretch on I-90. Never far from services. Cool on-line reservation feature was pretty easy to use http://www.parks.wa.gov/reserve.asp or one can call (888) CAMPOUT to reserve a place over the phone. Side trips to the wineries around Chelan or the Rocky Reach Dam on the Columbia River, located off Alt. Hwy. 97 near Entiat are pretty cool things to do/see when you're there or on the way home. Bring your own firewood. Bundles you buy there are $5 and some places sell them roadside for $3-4 a bundle. A bundle is about 4-6 shoebox sized split logs lashed together. Animals we saw during the trip: huge birds of prey bats (creeped us out, but we were happy they were keeping skeeters in check) squirrels or chipmunks deer (incl. a smooshed one on Hwy 97) trout (at Rocky Reach Dam) read more

The BF and I spent 3 days and 2 nights here when we needed an escape from city life! This campground is great! Our site was spacious; we were far enough from neighboring sites. Our site was also surrounded by trees, so we had privacy, shade & I was able to hang up my hammock! We were within walking distance to everything - it was awesome! Our site was close enough to First Creek - we could hear water running all day and all night, which helped to drown out any noise. We were able to walk down to the lake, easily. The water was crystal clear and mighty chilly, but I didn't mind that because it was HOT! The BF and I managed to fit in some swim workouts before the crowds came trickling in - if you want to hit up the lake before it gets crowded, get down there before 12noon. There is plenty of open grassy areas - the BF and I were able to toss the frisbee one afternoon, while other groups played volleyball and some other game that looked like cricket, but not cricket (if that makes sense). The bathroom facilities were clean (serviced once a day, in the early afternoon) and shower tokens were required for hot water showers. Tokens may be purchased at the ranger station at the entrance of the park. There is a convenience store with just about everything you could possibly need, so in the event you forget something, chances are they'll have it for you there... saving you a trip out of the campgrounds to some store miles away. We got bags of ice and bundles of firewood from the store. It's a little pricey compared to outside of the park, but when you're in a pinch, this can be a life saver. Oh, and the BEST part - I got zero.. nada... nil... zilch... mosquito bites! I am THE most bug bite-prone person on the planet. I sprayed myself with OFF once a day, in the evening. Usually, I have to apply OFF a bazillion times to keep my bug bite count to under 25 - but not here! Thank GAWD! All in all, we had a GREAT time at Lake Chelan State Park. I highly recommend this place to everyone! Come relax, sit on the hill overlooking the lake to watch everything happen, grill up some good eats, sit under a tree and read a good book, feel the light breeze blow by as the warm sun shines above you, sit around a big campfire, enjoy being out in nature - you'll be glad you did! We'll def be back!!! The BF and I have already started planning our next camping trip out there - this may just become our annual camping destination! Just came back from a fantastic weekend at Lake Chelan State Park. This is a fantastic campground specially if you like beautiful surroundings with the convenience of having the store, the clean bathrooms (with hot showers), and the nearby town. We only spent 2 nights but decided we will be back for a 4 night trip ASAP. There's so much to do in this area! The kids had a blast playing in the water, they loved the playground, and while we were cooking they rode their bikes around and played with the neighbor kids. If you go during non-holiday weekends, the camp is pretty much filled with families, which in my opinion is great because it gets pretty quiet after 10 pm. My recommendations are: - Bring earplugs, this is a dog friendly park so you are subject to the possibility of obnoxious barking, little kids yelling/crying, cars, etc. - There is no shade by the water, bring an umbrella if you want to sit close to the edge of the lake. - Bring soap for the showers. They are coin operated. - Bring water toys, they are overpriced at the store. - With that said, having the store right there open at 7 am (Fri-Sun) is a blessing when you need your morning coffee and don't want to wait for the fire to be ready, so you can boil water. Lattes are the same price the would be a drive through in the city. read more

To be honest, this place is way too packed for my tastes. If you want to make a reservation for a campsite, you must do it months in advance otherwise, you're out of luck. Makes sense because this is the one out of two state parks in Lake Chelan. The park itself is pretty standard, it has a lot of amenities which are nice but if you're looking for something more remote and off the grid, this is not it, at all. On the plus side, you have access to the lake for swimming, fishing, boating, etc. I'd say this is a nice spot for families because the park even has a playground and a small store complete with popsicles. We have never been to Lake Chelan, though heard lots of great things about it! The campgrounds are very neat, right on the gorgeous lake with crystal clear waters. You park your car up on the hill, then there is a short staircase and a walkway to the camp site. No mosquitos which was surprising, but lots of wasps flying around the food. Very quiet place with lots of families. Take watershoes to exit the waters, the rocks can be slippery. We didn't even go to the beach, it was so much fun to jump into the waters right from the dock! The bathrooms are ok pretty clean, up the hill, not far from campground. There is one shower that works with tokens, which can be purchased by the ranger station. read more

This is our new destination for our annual camping trip! The biggest draw is simply Lake Chelan itself. Lake Chelan State Park has a nice beach area with a concession stand that sells ice-cream, coffee, and other things you might need at the beach. As one reviewer pointed out, Lake Chelan State Park can be very busy, but it depends on your location. The parks popularity makes it difficult to reserve. We lucked out at the last minute because of someone else's last minute cancellation so I suggest you check back regularly for open sites. The park also arranges special events like movie night and walking tours, which are posted on bulletin boards near the bathrooms. The bathrooms themselves are clean and offer hot showers - 1 token = 3 minutes. Tokens are available at the ranger's office. Considering hotels in Lake Chelan cost $200+ a night, camping for less than $20 is well worth it. Pros: location, location, location, concession stand, beach, boat launch, playground, hot showers. They just finished some remodeling on a section of campsites. The view is spectacular! However this is offset by the fact that there is nothing but dry dirt everywhere. We even had workers stop by to finish a job that required digging more dirt. The park should not be opening the sites up and taking money from people if they aren't finished! So a potential 5 star is now a 3 star. Only the view and accessibility to the lake is saving my rating from being a 1 star. read more

We got lucky and scored one of the beach tent sites for a night when we arrived on a Sunday late afternoon. There was only one other camp site left and it was taken by the end of the day too. So we learned our lesson: reserve very early or you may not have a site even on an "off" day. I wished we could have stayed there for several nights. Watching the colors play off the land across the lake during sunset, reading in the shade while a cooling breeze blows ... this is the life! As it goes with camping there are always inconveniences: bathrooms are a 5min walk, you have to bring your own soap, jet skis and boats tearing through the pristine lake with people whooping and yelling. But for $25/night I'll stay a few more nights ... if the site is available. But alas, it is not. In fact, there were no sites available for a us to stay a 2nd night. So off to look for more camping grounds and luckily we found more further along the road: 25mile state park and snowberry campground. read more

Our family of 6 spent last weekend camping at this great park. We had a wonderful time and will definitely return. Bathrooms were clean, grounds were well kept, and the lake was clear and cold. Also, the kiddies loved the playground. The park store was very convenient and had everything we needed. They even had a corkscrew (we forgot ours, but we remembered the wine thank the Lord) which they delivered to our campsite when they initially couldn't find one. The only minor negative was that our site was situated very close to our neighbors and I noticed that many of the sites lacked privacy. We will definitely be back to camp this summer if we can get a site reserved. read more

Lake Chelan - Great for families wanting to camp at a lake Last year we camped at 3 different campsites and this one was far and away the kid's favorite. I liked it but I can't say it was my favorite. Overall I say it's a great place for families with some caveats. There is a lot for families here: Swimming in the lake, playground, nearby water park (Slidewaters) and most importantly for Seattleites that are sick of rain - lots of Sun. There is also a concession stand at the lake and a restaurant across the road if you are tired of camp food. The concession stand also sells another of handy items you might need or forgotten to pack - sunscreen, swimsuits, water toys, flip flops, firewood. There are also coin operated showers and flush toilets. The lake is great. There are lots of places to spread out on grass or sand and still see the lake. The water is clear (and cold). There is a roped off swimming area (no lifeguard though), and another area free of motorized watercraft if you want to boat around under your own power. This past year there was a place to rent paddleboards and kayaks. All that makes it a very popular campsite and as many other reviewers have mentioned it fills up fast and it's not particularly quiet. The tent sites are highly variable in size and shape - from huge & private to cramped & next to the restrooms. Not only that it can be hard to figure out where your campsite ends and your neighbor's begins. The first year we went we had a huge spot near the creek with plenty of space for the kids to run around and I don't remember hearing much except that creek at night. The second year, it was still good-sized but we ended up with noisy neighbors yakking past 11 pm at night. Lake Chelan has another odd feature - water sprinklers in unexpected locations that are on most of the morning. We even had one almost soak our campsite. Fortunately only the car got wet and I didn't happen to have any windows open at the moment. I understand that it's dry there and if you want grass to survive, you need to water it, but playing sprinkler dodge every day got a little old. To summarize - I like Lake Chelan but it feels more like a tent resort than a campground. There isn't much hiking to be down and its a bit crowded. Recommendation - try to get a quiet spot, bring ear plugs, be prepared to play sprinkler dodge or get wet. read more

the good- This place is great. I really enjoyed my visit. The water was the clearest warmest I have ever been in within Washington state. It was totally worth the trip. We docked our boat right in the park with free overnight moorage / parking / launching. The view and the water skiing / boating was experience was incredible and I will remember enjoying it with my family for the rest of my life. Also there was wild deer walked right threw the camp. A+++ The bad / ugly / stupid - You can totally tell this park is owned and run by the state of Washington, no wonder the state is so far in the hole . "Worst customer service I have" ever seen in a camp ground. The people who run the park seem to be really stupid and should be fired. Due to a the parks Policy's and skedaddling conflict we were forced to move sports 3x, we wasted a hole day of our camping trip moving camping sites due to employee incompetence. There was NO soap in the bathrooms provided and no toilet paper in the bathroom. The ranger station for reservations dose NOT open until 2pm and dose not stay open for very long. The trash cans in the park were overflowing with trash. They charge you to take a shower you have to purchase shower tokens. The first night we were there drunk college kids parting kept us up all night long. read more

This place is amazing! There is a beautiful view for the campsites on the lake! The access to the lake is so easy. The lake isn't too cold if you are going to the summer and the sites by the lake aren't as hot as the others. The only reason I'm putting 4 stars instead of 5 is because the Rangers were being unreasonable and almost kicked the people in my site out. We were blamed for some other people by our site. There was no shade at our campsite during 95°+ weather so we ventured to Chelan to find a more bearable spot to hang with our pooch. The shade and beach were very nice. I was excited to go to Lake chelan for the weekend. Having made reservations a week before my intended stay, I was on the website playing around and accidentally hit the cancel reservation button. I would think that something so big, canceling my reservation would require me to double confirm. But, no that didn't happen. Not only did I lose $55.40 but can't even go Lake Chelan without having to make another reservation for 50 bucks! Explaining my situation to customer service did not help me but only made me more irritated and angry. Is it difficult to simply re-assign me to another camp site.. I'm sure not ALL of your campsites are full.. Very disappointed with customer service not having to able to find an alternate situation for me. I'm not even asking for a refund but really a chance to GO camping. read more

3 stars from me because all I feel like this campground has going for it is the lake. Other than that, the campsites are all very close and there is little privacy. We stayed in a trailer site however, and the tent sites seem to be where it's at. If you book a tent site you have your own private site right on the water, but you have to park on the road and pack your camping stuff down a trail. The beach area was crowded with kids, and the store was overpriced. The bathrooms were fairly clean, but the showers only take tokens which you have to buy at the main office. If we came back, it would be to stay in a tent site and reservations are definitely necessary. read more
