Pulling into this rest stop was straightforward. I was the only person using this rest stop, so parking wasn't an issue. The pathway to the rest stop was nicely maintained and shovelled. The women's washroom was clean. There was a lot of information about the washroom being a septic tank. I like rest stops that allow me to learn at my pace. There was a male staffer taking a break when I left. I saw a sign about Charles Lindbergh's ties to Minnesota, so I read it outside before I headed to my vehicle. Staying a bit longer allowed me to figure things out. This rest stop is in Avon, Minnesota. Why is it called Middle Spunk? Well, I looked at the frozen lake behind the snowbanks and trees. The lake is called Middle Spunk Lake. Across from this lake is Big Spunk Lake. I reckon that this place is awesome in the summertime. I can see boats out and folks fishing. It was nice to stop here. Thankfully, the Middle Spunk Rest Area has no sign prohibiting overnight parking. I lined up, shut down and secured for the night. Yes, my Sprinter van is a converted RV and thanks to the fabulous layout of the rest area, the parking spots are pretty far from the noise of the roadway. It was quiet and peaceful. I made my own lines. There was a man plowing the sidewalk. It was nice. I was trying to figure out where the sidewalk was and made my way up to the building. The women's washroom was clean. What was weird about each toilet in each stall was that it was absurdly low to the ground. I'd say that it was maybe a foot at most above ground. If you're a kid or a short person, you might like how low the toilet is. I'm tall. I was actually impressed that I could get up after using it. There wasn't a lot of information on the history behind Hansel Lake. Clear Lake is across from it. It would have been cool if there was a Gretel Lake nearby. There are vending machines inside the building. There's a picnic area, which would be nice to enjoy during the summertime. No pets are allowed there. When I left the building, the nice man had plowed in front of my rental vehicle. I appreciated his efforts. I do find that Minnesota rest stops are nicely maintained. There was a…read moresnowstorm during my road trip, which had briefly dissipated by the time I got to Fuller Lake. It was windy. I parked and got out of my vehicle. I was hoping that the wind would blow me over to the building, but it was blowing sideways. I can't win 'em all! The walkway was nicely plowed. I had no problem walking up to the building to use the women's washroom. The stall that I used was nicely maintained. No issues. Everything was clean. This rest stop has vending machines. If you need drinks or snacks, you're in luck. The selection is decent. The machines accept coins, cash, and credit cards. As I was walking back to my vehicle, a man was plowing the sidewalk. On this day, it would be the last time I saw anyone clearing snow at any rest stop north of St. Cloud. The snowstorm got worse as I cut through North Dakota. I had a great experience here. It was good to stretch here before driving through the worst part of the snowstorm. (16)

I walked up and entered two sets of doors. I saw a yellow sign posted up saying that the women's washroom was being cleaned. My heart sank. My poor bladder! Luckily, the man who had just put up that sign looked at me. "I'll wait for you. Go ahead!" he said with the most cheerful smile. "Thanks!" I said. The washroom stall that I used was clean. There was lots of liquid soap next to the sink that I was using. My bladder and I were happy. I ducked under the yellow sign to leave. I thanked the man. He wished me a happy Christmas. I did the same. Every rest stop in Minnesota has a brief customer satisfaction survey. You can text, call, surf, or scan the QR code. I like the entire setup. We talked about technology. It's supposed to make things easier, but sometimes it doesn't. It was nice chatting with a staffer at this rest area. Normally, I just drop by and leave a rest area, without any human interaction. This rest stop is maintained extremely well. I liked learning about the Red River ox cart trails. It's nice when you can do a self-guided tour while you take a breather from driving. This rest area was a bit quirky when it came to the vending machines. If you are looking for a snack, the vending machine is inside the building. If you feel like a cold drink, it's located outside. I'm wondering if this outdoor machine works when it's freezing outside during a normal winter day. This year hasn't been normal weather-wise, so this beverage machine seemed to be okay when I was there. If you have a pet, there is an area for pets to stretch and play. It was a colder day when I was here. The trees and snow made this outdoor area picturesque. I'm sure that it's gorgeous during the summer. There was a picnic area that would be perfect to relax and enjoy lunch outside. I like that Minnesota rest stops invite you to submit feedback. The state has decent, nicely maintained rest stops. Very useful rest area on I-94 westbound between Minneapolis and Fargo where I stopped to use the…read morerestroom, stretch my legs and when my phone rang, I ended up spending over an hour here on a work call and Zoom meeting. The rest area has a long sweeping turn which is something I appreciate as it truly helps to slow down the cars as they come off the highway at 75 mph. There is a "front" truck parking area and the car parking in the back is accessible for trucks as well. So keep an eye out for larger vehicles coming through and give them plenty of space.
