This glacier formed lake, on the edge of the Olympic National Forest, has captured my heart. I spent a perfect couple of hours here with my dog in January, on a rare sunny day. It was cold, but that's fine with us. Layer that merino wool and hit the trail! I've never seen streams and rivers this clear. The water was utterly transparent, and I could see details of the bottom no matter how deep. Watching it fall over ledges, rumble through rocks, and tumble down toward the lake was mesmerizing. I could have stayed all day on any of the bridges, lost in the beauty. And there are benches convenient for exactly that purpose, but the trail has so much to offer I pulled myself away. The rain forest is amazing. Heavy moss, odd fungi on the sides of trees like little shelves, ferns, lush green views in every direction. The trail is soft with pine needles. The 3.8 mile Qinault Loop Trail is gentle with very little gain. A couple of spots where parents should keep littles from the drop off, but for most of it they can run back and forth with no worries. My old dog didn't have any problems and her hips give her trouble. I'd say this a trail most ambulatory creatures can manage. It is sadly not all accessible, but there are spots down near the lodge and campgrounds where mobility issues wouldn't keep someone from soaking in the experience. The camping tent spots along the lake at Willaby campground are great! Each is arranged so that there is nothing between you and the lake. I already made a reservation for 2 nights this May. I can't wait to explore more.

The Sour Cream Standoff!…read more I came with my best friend and from the start the energy felt off. She ordered chili cheese fries and asked for a side of sour cream, something I have witnessed her successfully order there before. The server immediately responded with attitude, saying they do not have sour cream. My friend calmly explained she has gotten it before, however the server remained firm and did not offer to check with the kitchen. When the food arrived, there was no sour cream so I politely asked if she had checked with the kitchen. She replied, "We don't have sour cream lady" and walked away without clarifying whether she had actually asked. When she returned, I said I was not trying to be confrontational, just genuinely curious if she had confirmed with the kitchen. She admitted she had not asked because she "knew they did not have any" At that point I asked if she could please just humor me and double check since it would take a few seconds while picking up food. Five minutes later a woman approached the table in full defensive mode and asked, "Are you the one asking for sour cream?" She identified herself as the owner and was immediately combative. The entire restaurant went quiet. It was wildly uncomfortable. She explained that sometimes they did have it but they do not right now. The issue was never about sour cream. It was about the attitude and unprofessional behavior of staff and owner, as well as escalation over something that could have been resolved in a few seconds. Beyond that, the overall experience did not improve. The restaurant felt unclean, the bathrooms were rough, and the food did not make up for the tension. It is one thing to run out of an item. It is another thing entirely to turn a simple question into a public confrontation. Disappointing across the board.

Finally stopped at this place during a trip down to Astoria. I'm pissed I haven't stopped sooner…read more So good!! Food was real good, moist and fresh, great bbq sauce and their sides were perfect. Staff was quick, friendly, funny and clearly enjoys working for the owners. Definitely a little country style, not a bad joint what so ever.
