The Sour Cream Standoff! I came with my best friend and from the start the energy felt off. She ordered chili cheese fries and asked for a side of sour cream, something I have witnessed her successfully order there before. The server immediately responded with attitude, saying they do not have sour cream. My friend calmly explained she has gotten it before, however the server remained firm and did not offer to check with the kitchen. When the food arrived, there was no sour cream so I politely asked if she had checked with the kitchen. She replied, "We don't have sour cream lady" and walked away without clarifying whether she had actually asked. When she returned, I said I was not trying to be confrontational, just genuinely curious if she had confirmed with the kitchen. She admitted she had not asked because she "knew they did not have any" At that point I asked if she could please just humor me and double check since it would take a few seconds while picking up food. Five minutes later a woman approached the table in full defensive mode and asked, "Are you the one asking for sour cream?" She identified herself as the owner and was immediately combative. The entire restaurant went quiet. It was wildly uncomfortable. She explained that sometimes they did have it but they do not right now. The issue was never about sour cream. It was about the attitude and unprofessional behavior of staff and owner, as well as escalation over something that could have been resolved in a few seconds. Beyond that, the overall experience did not improve. The restaurant felt unclean, the bathrooms were rough, and the food did not make up for the tension. It is one thing to run out of an item. The bbq is worth the drive. I had the brisket sandwich with beans and fries. The meat was moist and flavorful. I pad extra for pickles. While I didn't think it's right to charge extra for pickles and onions, the pickles were pretty good. I also paid extra to substitute fries for one of the sides. They looked a lot better than they were, not very crispy I'm afraid. The wife went for the combination beef and pork ribs, she thought those were very good. Service was both friendly and efficient. I typically go for the baby back ribs at any good BQ place but did not see it on the menu this time, didn't ask because I thought I'd go for the sampler this time, kind of hankering for some good BQ chicken. Last time I came with my wife & some of our kids along with her dad, & they even had venison as one of their specials which he loved. The plate was overflowing with lots of BQ and everything was spot on including 2 sides choosing their signature chili & tangy potato salad. The chicken, rib, brisket, & pulled pork was all as tasty as BQ can be, besides tender. I did in the chicken & 2 sides plus 1/2 of the rib & nibbled on a little of the brisket & pulled pork, so ended up with another full meal of left overs to take home. Didn't have a reservation & ate in the bar so I didn't have to wait 15 minutes, and it was quiet in there anyway. The place has a very nice ambiance and the staff very attentive as busy as they were. I went to sleep while my husband drove to this place. I woke up in the turning lane off the hi-way. As soon as I saw this place, "We about to be eating good in the neighborhood." This place reminds me of going home to Alabama to some hole-in-the-wall, off the map restaurant in the middle of the woods! I had to ask how long I had been sleeping! As you walk towards the front door, you can already SMELL the smokiness of the BBQ baked in this joint like Steward's Meats in McKenna, WA. It's completely captivating! Ordered the pulled pork meal. There was nothing left to take home. Delicious! This place has awards for its BBQ stretching out for miles. There are license plates from every state in the US stapled on the ceiling for aesthetic. We always drove by this place and finally had time to stop and try their food. Needless to say we should have kept on driving! Sad, they have these awards decorated the walls of their restaurant but the food was horrible! So, you are left wondering what food won those awards?! We ordered brisket meal which looked thinly cut day old microwaved meat that when the light hit it you can see rainbow iridescent sheen on it which if fine but it's not appealing to eat. ( where's the bark? Smoke line?) my kids shared the sampler plate with once again brisket, pulled pork, quarter chicken, 3 pork ribs and hot link. All the meats are just off specially the chicken it's tough and dry, rubbery meat and raw in the middle. My husband ordered the pork ribs and that seems the most edible out of all the things we ordered but he still needed to douse it with sauce. Order their special "Beef Ribs" and Pork Rib platter... so dry and almost 0 meat on the beef ribs. supposed to be traditional Texas style BBQ, but pork ribs were so dry... obviously oven heated and had ZERO smoked. Beans were canned bush beans mixed with some bbq sauce. When I showed the server the ribs and how dry they were his response was "Oh, you must have got a bad batch" and proceeded to take the meat and bring me my full check. I have been coming to this BBQ joint for a few years now. It is a little far from me so I don't get out there as much but they have such an extensive BBQ menu and the place is usually always busy! We stopped in to a packed out restaurant, which we took for a good sign. A blonde woman was the one who put us on the wait list. Gleefully called my man hun and flirted with him while putting us on the wait list. When I asked how long the wait was, her ear to ear grin at my man turned into complete disdain and her response was a nasty "longer than five minutes but under five hours". I looked at her and asked if she was serious and she was rude further to me. The complete lack of respect was uncalled for and she sent a clear signal that she's completely disrespectful to other women. Unlike her, I do not emulate Southern culture. I am Southern. The only saving grace to this nasty attitude and even worse food was our server who did her best to rescue the experience (Rachel). Service was good but my god the food was terrible. Easily the worst bbq I've ever had. Friend and I got fried mac and cheese balls that were flavorless. We had to drown them in salt and pepper. Also ordered brisket which came chopped and mostly fatty. Completely flavorless, dry brisket all a uniform gray color with no smoke ring or smoke taste. Baked beans were just straight black pepper taste. Potato salad was just okay, also no seasoning and it had black olives which was strange. Best part of the meal was probably the jiffy cornbread muffins with butter. My friend and I both agreed we wouldn't go here again. Best bbq in Washington. Hands down. We have passed this place a couple times and finally made the time to stop, and we are so glad. It's so cute inside, with the entire ceiling filled with old license plates, and all the walls full of all of their awards and clippings! The staff was so sweet too, always apologizing for the wait (we didn't feel we even had a wait). The food though, wow wow wow. Their pulled pork was out of this world. Sooo much flavor before they sauced it for me! And the brisket was so tender and they removed the fat which we always appreciate. The cobbler was a perfect addition for the road home as well. Let's start by saying that good, slow smoked (like 10-15 hrs) bbq is expensive so don't go here thinking it's a cheap meal choice. Takes time to develop that kind of flavor. With that in mind, this place offers rare gems not often found outside of Austin. It's truly Texas-style bbq. No wonder Food Network gave it so much praise! The brisket is pure smokey goodness, pork well-seasoned and super moist and the chicken is usually good and flavorful but they have missed with it being a bit dry once or twice. Pork ribs are also very good but can be a little fatty... not too bad though. I'll eat them, for sure. Best item they have is their Beef Ribs! Smokey, juicy, on the lean side, fall-off-the bone delicious! Sides are solid, as well. Love the beans and the potato salad! Gave the garlic fries a try a few months ago! Again, surprisingly yummy. Don't ignore the specials either because we have gotten some of our most memorable food ever from those. We had a marinated pork chop and a bbq corn on the cob once that left us talking about it for months. Final note, if you're new, get a sampler platter and find your favorites....,Or, just get the beef ribs if they have them......You will not regret it! read more

We drive 45 minutes to get this a couple times a year and we load up for the ride home too. You can smell it from two exits away. The staff are friendly and fast. I have seen it quiet & calm and packed & busy, they do a great job either way. My personal favorite is pulled pork and brisket but the chili, coleslaw and corn bread are all worth the price. read more

I've been meaning to try this place for years. It's kinda off the beaten path between Olympia and the beach. So often we're just trying to get somewhere when we drive by. Today I didn't have anywhere to be so I stopped for a late lunch. Glad I did. I'll definitely be back. I was worried I couldn't smell the pit from outside but as soon as I stepped in I got the undeniable waft of BBQ Goodness. I ordered the mix of pulled pork and brisket with the chili (upcharge) and the tangy coleslaw. I always try to get the point for my brisket because I enjoy the extra fat and fat=flavor. The chili came out first and it was WELL worth the small upcharge. I make good chili and this was at least as good. My only complaint is that it had beans (don't @ me!). But it was really good! The plate came out and my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. The brisket was very moist and flavorful as was the pulled pork. I never put BBQ sauce on my meat until I have a chance to try it on its own. I did notice they dusted everything with their rub, which was ok, and I tend to like a good BBQ joint to just let their meat stand on their own with the seasoning applied to the exterior. This is a VERY minor complaint. The BBQ sauce is good too. I tried it after sampling the meat. Not spicy at all and there wasn't a spicy option that I saw. Again not an issue for me. The Coleslaw was fresh and indeed tangy. Really flavorful! The cornbread muffin was also perfect texture for me. Not too dense and it didn't fall apart either. Will definitely be back!
