Feeding, observing, getting a really close look and feel of these beautiful, mainly Safari animals. Some were impressively large like the bison, longhorn, buffalo, zebra's, camels with extremely long tongues and large teeth! It was quite pricey, because you get charged per person and not per car. It rang up $79 total for our party of four. I would definitely recommend to bring wipes for your hands, to clean up, and a car wash afterwards because your car will be covered in saliva. There were picnic tables and a large gazebo to eat lunch at and we walked around on some trails that went through the trees and close to a pond. It was a nice break off the train. The purpose of this area is to primarily preserve habitat, and the Texas Forest Service has excelled at doing so. There are tons of pretty clearly marked trails that will take you through a wide variety of ecosystems supporting an immense diversity of plants and animals. This is one of those places that really allows you to forget that the outside world exists If you come here, respect the place. Respect the land and it will respect you. Take only pictures and leave it better than you found it. There has been a lot of time and effort put into the place to preserve habitats that are very rapidly disappearing. People do in fact care a lot about it. It might not have bathrooms and amenities, but it doesn't need that. Don't come here for that. Come here to see what this region looked like everywhere precolonization. I reccomend you take some snacks, plenty of water, and long pants/bug spray if you plan on getting off trail (which i reccomend if you are an expirenced enough hiker to do it). There is an area with a picnic table where you can have lunch. I said it once already, respect the land and it will respect you. Take that advice everywhere you go.

First of all, it is not a park. The word "park" is not in the name, so therefore it makes no…read morepromises to amuse you or to invite you to enjoy it. That was my first mistake-- assuming this place was some sort of park. It's merely a forest, and hiking is merely tolerated. My second mistake was brushing off my instincts when I parked in its-- well, it doesn't have a parking lot per se, just a flat patch of dirt off the highway near a trailhead. What I should have done at that moment was drive away, but I convinced myself to ignore the truly creepy (not a fun creepy, but a "I'm going to trip on a dead body" creepy) vibe I got from this forest. At several points I had to volley myself over long-ago fallen trees, and the moment I realized I needed to leave this place in my rearview mirror was when I found myself hip-deep in foliage ON THE "TRAIL." The white paint on the trees to mark it off beckoned me further, but when a thorny vine wrapped itself around my ankles causing me to fall, I realized this forest may actually be trying to trap and possibly eat me. Not my idea of an ideal hiking experience, to say the least. The best hikes make you feel closer to God. The worst hikes make you pray that God will help you get safely home. This hike made me question the existence of God-- or at least a maintenance crew. Perhaps my previous two days at Davy Crockett National Park and Mission Tejas had spoiled me to their well-maintained trails and welcoming staff and accommodations? Perhaps I should have come better equipped than sneakers and shorts and instead come in winter when I can bear to put on hiking boots, jeans, and maybe chaps? Or perhaps this is a terrible place to go hiking and you can easily find better trails both up and down the highway. It's clear no one cares about this place, so why should you? P.S. I so rarely write 1-star reviews, but as I write this, I'm nursing a poison ivy rash in the wee hours of the morning. Thanks again, Fairchild Forest. Burn in hell.
