It's not overrun with folks and it's clean and relaxing and I love it. It's a good 1.5hrs from Montreal (not including traffic) and that prob keeps the crowds down. The best part might be the little casse croute run by a local dad and some kids. They make the hot dogs and burgers and things when you order them on a small hotplate and chat with you at the window while you wait. It's delicious and cheap and perfect.

Photos cannot do justice to the magnificent view of the mountains and light blue color of the water. Parking is limited in the small lot (perhaps 15 spaces available). The hiking trail itself was peaceful with the sound of birds, a few babbling brooks, and tree-shaded canopy that made a pleasant afternoon hike (about 1 hour for a round-trip loop walk). If your time is limited for a full hike in the area, I would strongly recommend this South Shore Loop trail for a satisfying walk!

If I did tho, you couldn't have pulled me away from the beauty of the White Mountains. I am however one of the old alums so I remember when there used to be an Old Man of the Mountain before his nose fell off lol. Anyways, this place has my entire heart and I only share it with people I trust. I took my friend here for a weekend getaway of rustic camping and hiking last April and I can safely say she also fell in love. We ran up and down I-93, I showed her the remnants of the Old Man, we stopped by the lake (lord it was cold), then we went to the Basin - beautiful in ALL seasons - and hiked a trail on-site. God I love Franconia so much. If you haven't gotten the chance to visit please make it a priority. It's stunning in all seasons! Things to know: -you can access The Basin from either side of 93. If on the far side you just need to cross under the overpass. -The Basin is paved. There are some stairs to get a closer look but it is largely accessible to view. -Still snow in some sections in late April - you're ok without spikes imo -parking was still free as of last year

We rented the…read moreBalsam Fir cabin which is located right next to First Connecticut Lake (see picture) and were not disappointed. The view was amazing. The cabin was very clean with a spacious kitchen and living room with cable TV. There were two bedrooms, one with queen size mattress and the other with two full size beds. There was also an extra full bed in the living room. The bathroom was small but functional. The cabins come with pots, pans, mugs, plates, bowls, utensils, coffee machine, microwave and fridge . Just be sure to bring your own salt, pepper, and other condiments. On Saturday we spent the whole day outside riding ATVS and water skiing. Then grabbed dinner at the Rainbow Grill on Beach Rd. It was the best food we have had in a long time. We will definitely be back Ramblewood Cabins next year and hopefully spend more than just a few days.

The proximity to the lake and all of the different water sport options are awesome and readily available. There are also numerous stunning hiking trails within walking distance from the campsite. The positives of the trip: amazing staff, well-stocked store w/ good hot food options, clean bathrooms, right on the lake, water sports, hiking, scenery. The negatives: the sites are a tad close together, so you can hear others' conversations, Route 5A is very loud and cars fly by very quickly at all hours of the day, you have to pay for the showers (not uncommon, but somewhat annoying if you don't have quarters), and our campsite was pretty uneven, which was especially problematic in the rain. If you're going to stay here, I would recommend bringing lots of quarters, bug spray, and potentially renting one of the platform sites so you know you won't be sleeping at an angle. Overall, the experience there was great. My breakfast burrito on the last day was delicious and a bittersweet end to a great stay. Thank you, white caps!!

Everyone here is helpful and personable. And the views can't be beat. Even on one particularly rainy day, it was gorgeous. A solid four stars. One note. Spaces are really tight and in some cases, impossibly close together. Some sites, I wonder how people even get their rigs in. But you're there for the lake and getting out into nature, so it's not horrible once you get parked.

The slopes of the Cannon Mountain ski area drop right to the edge of the lake, and the view highlights where the Franconia Range and Kinsman Range meet, creating the notch. On the lake shores, you also have the option to rent canoes and kayaks for $20/hour or pedal boats for $25/hour. Parking: on busy days, you might have to wait 10-20 minutes to get to the parking spot.

There's a great grass area to picnic and set up chairs and whatnot (even a few covered picnic areas, but those go pretty quick). The roped off swim area has three entrances (two with steps and one with"beach entry"). The majority of swim area is very shallow (less than 4'), but there are sections close to the rope where it gets quite deep. The lake floor in the swim area is incredibly soft sand with very little rocks. Only con I can think of is I'm not sure if there is a restroom on site (we didn't need one while we were there, but I didn't see any obvious structures).

There is not one draw-back that l can think of here. It has epic beauty. The trees and forests with lake views are magnificent. Everything is sanitary. Vermont people are exceedingly clean and conscientious about their surroundings. Camp sites are pristine. Restrooms are equipped and clean and accessible. If you are counting on an amazing camping trip, look forward to visiting Burton lsland !

Park at Kill Kare State Park and take the Island Runner to Burton Island, about a 10 minute ride. The ferry crew help to load your items onto the boat and you can pay $10 to have it delivered to your site.  Upon boarding the ferry, crew member Morgan welcomed us and gave us an overview of the Island and how everything worked. She recommended alternative swimming areas and prime sunset viewing spots. Morgan remembered us on our way back a few days later. She really made our visit that much more memorable, and the rest of the staff were super friendly as well. The island is equipped with showers & bathrooms (don't forget quarters!), trash & recycling recepticals, water spickets, kayak & canoe rentals, and weekly nature/survival lessons for kids. There are a few hiking trails and even some secret spots where you can post up and hang on the water for the day.   They offer traditional tent sites and lean-tos - some of which are right on the water. We plan to book one of these next time. Wood is available for purchase but be sure to ask for dry wood depending on recent weather conditions. The best spot about BI is the store, which is stocked with pretty much everything camping-related: beer & wine, drinks, snacks, ice, souveniers, etc. The store has a small kitchen with a grill and they make sandwiches and sides cooked to order. All of it is reasonably priced, and they accept credit/debit cards. Overall this experience was a very unique one but extremely rewarding. I highly recommend visiting Burton Island!!!

This park offers so much from a nice campground (and horse campground) to magical forest hikes and the cherry on the top amazing views down to the valley and "pond" from the top of the owl trail. We visited the area with small kids (3-4 years old, that love hikes) and they walked the trails and said, and I quote, "It was fun". This is Vermont a wonderful state, colored in vivid green during the summer and the entrance to the parks cost only 4$. If you are a nature loving people looking for a long or short hike, come here.
