It smelled like fresh fish, everything was nicely displayed, enough workers to keep the line moving, it was worth the drive! Sooo many options, from whole fish to crabs to claws to filets... I spent about $75 on 4 thick salmon steaks, 2lbs of tilapia, 2lbs of jumbo shrimp, 4 blue live crabs, and seasonings. Everything was bagged nicely and they even place an extra bag with ice! Just went to pickup some seafood at Lakeland Seafood market today. First time customer! WOW!!! Bought some grouper and some shrimp!! Came home, cooked the grouper in a pan with olive oil and butter and sprinkled some oregano and dill on top and it just melted in my mouth! SO FRESH!! I cooked the shrimp in a pan with olive oil and sprinkled some Old Bay seasoning on top and the shrimp were equally delish!! If you are looking for fresh wild caught right from Florida waters...look no further!! This is now my go to for seafood!!! (and no, I don't work here or know anyone). I went to Lakeland seafood yesterday to get some shrimp fish and other items. I've been going to Lakeland Seafood since it opened 40 years ago. And I've never had any issues with them in the past. When I was working on a fundraiser, John provided me a discount on the fish. But yesterday I had a sarcastic lady who waited on me, no employees wore mask, but worst of all, she didn't wear gloves when getting my shrimp, fish. An other items the cooler. My go to local market for fresh seafood since relocating to Lakeland three years ago -- from many years in San Francisco and spoiled by walking to my favorite spots to shop for fresh! The counter staff are pleasant and helpful even during their busiest times on Fridays and Saturdays. At Lakeland Seafood, I most often buy Royal Reds from the Gulf Coast (wonderful) and Fresh Cod (appears to have been frozen fresh and thawed for sale). The cod worked fine for my Coconut Curry Fish Instant Pot Recipe. This week, I tried fresh black mussels (origin unknown)-- but I was sorely disappointed once steamed them per my typical "Barefoot in Paris" recipe. Great seafood store with big variety. Clerks are knowledgeable and don't mind sharing the back story on their fish. Had multiple kinds of shrimp--wild, Gulf pink, Gulf white, Royal red, cleaned, shells on, flash frozen. Many kinds of fish fileted and not. They have a great system for crowded Saturday morning to grab your fish, bag it and THEN give you a number for the register. It's bustling Saturdays making parking difficult but midweek, had the store to myself. Our shrimp and wild salmon was all fresh and cooked well. (The wild caught was the same price as local grocery but redder and in smaller pieces.) I will pay the extra not to have to clean the shrimp myself next time tho! they also have many seasonings and breadings. I made my second purchase on Tuesday buying 2 dozen "Blue Point"oysters. These oysters should never have been sold to a customer. I understand the market can take delivery of sub par product but, they should have removed these fresh oysters. The product had soft and brittle shells that had holes bored into them like Swiss cheese. I could only use about 12 out of 24. Good thing that I'm knowledgeable of raw oysters, most customers would probably have thrown them all away. No more drives to Lakeland Seafood for me. I'll find a better market. read more

Summary: Great fresh seafood. Go early in the morning for best inventory. Helpful staff. Has all the spices and other seafood accompaniments you might need. Atmosphere: I'm really surprised that the gentleman felt the place smelled poorly. I would say it's what you would expect of seafood on ice. If you've ever gone to a Chinatown fish market in New York, I would say it's slightly less than that. The store is very clean. Service: Very helpful. While they can be quite busy, they are happy to help with seafood questions. The Food: Great selection of seafood. We got snow crab legs, large shrimp with head on, and clams. Clams are by the piece, but are a reasonable price, IMO. They had crawfish, but I would get there early. The prices are great and they go fast. They freshly catch local freshwater perch, aka tilapia. If we lived a little closer, I might go and get this regularly. As for accompaniments, they had a variety of crab and creole boil ingredients, including their own cajun mix. You could also find a variety of cocktail and tartar sauces. Pretty much anything that you'd want to use to cook your seafood with you could find, except for maybe lemons and limes... possibly I just didn't see them. Notes: The neighborhood is terrible, which makes me sad. After all these years, Lakeland still can't clean up this area. I wouldn't want to come here by myself except in the light of day. Lock your doors. Also bring a cooler or some floor covering. They do a great job bagging the items, but you don't want accidental drippage into your car. It won't come out. read more

I've certainly not experienced Gary H.'s problems at Lakeland Seafood Market. I've been shopping there since I was old enough to know what seafood was. I'll also say that this place never smells of "rotten" fish. I smells like a Seafood market should. There's a big difference between smelling "rotten" fish and a regular expected seafood market smell for a place that processes seafood all day every day for four decades. It smells like saltwater mixed with fresh fish. I can assure our readers that if Lakeland Seafood Market was selling rotten fish, they would not have been in business for as long as they have been, as there are plenty of other options in this town for buying fresh seafood. If you have any hang ups about the freshness of their products, examine them closely. You will see crystal clear fish eyes, supple wet skin, and clean ice in the display cases. Better yet, ask them to take the fish out of the case and examine it for yourself up close and not behind the glass. They have a great selection of local gulf seafood, as well as occasional deals that smoke whatever else anyone is selling. I've seen Fresh Gulf grouper there for $5.99/lb at various times throughout the year. They have fresh Gulf shrimp at all times at a reasonable price. They have a great selection of seasonings around the perimeter of the store to satisfy whatever you plan to do with the seafood you buy. They will be happy to de-bone, filet, and clean the fish however you want it done if you buy whole at no charge. They will also give you great advice on how to prepare something if you are confused or not certain about the preparation. The staff has always been courteous, but right down to business because there's generally a lot of people in the store at any given time, and they have to be efficient to work through their patrons. Go there on a Saturday and it'll be packed. My only knock on the place is that it is not in the best part of town, and you will from time-to-time encounter vagrants begging for money. read more

Fantastic selection of fresh caught fish and shellfish. They always have Florida caught gulf shrimp, or white shrimp from the Atlantic side. If you love a shrimp boil, they have local shrimp with the heads on. No good reason to buy imported, farm raised, contaminated shrimp from Viet Nam. Get your fish whole, cleaned, or completely de-boned and fileted. The people are very friendly and helpful. If you don't know what to order or how to prepare it, they will take the time to walk you through. read more

Don't get me wrong food is great but I was just there and my brother in law and nephew risk their life's to put out a car fire right next to the building (which saved their building from being burnt down) the manager won't even give us a discount. I have been buying oysters and other seafood from Lakeland Seafood for over 30 years! They informed me the other day that they no longer sell the burlap bags of oysters, but 30 lb boxes of pre-washed oysters! Pre-washed? really? Do you hire blind people to wash them? I had to open three oysters to get one that was edible! I just transferred them to another cooler and between the one pre-maturely opened, the ones busted and the half shells I doubt 50% of these oysters are edible! THIS IS THE WORST BATCH OF OYSTERS I HAVE EVER BOUGHT ANYWHERE IN MY 61 YEARS OF LIFE! ITS ROBBERY!
