BUT, if you are looking for a comfortable and quiet place to sleep that is within walking distance of fun places along a beautiful lake and you don't mind that it is outdated (in a charming sort of way), minimalistic, small, and basic, then this place would suit you quite well. And the prices are pretty decent (i.e., you get what you pay for). A few things: they leave you only one roll of toilet paper (maybe ask for an extra when you check in, I be prepared to ask for more), there is NO shampoo in the room, there is no alarm clock (most of us have cell phones or other devices that have alarms, though), no phone. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would probably go back.

A great destination that is truly at the end of the road. Best time of the summer for us! You will leave feeling like you made two more best friends, after you meet Steve & Cheryl.

I golf there every summer with friends in a scramble tournament and the Forest Hills is always a good host, and you can tell they truly appreciate the business. At the clubhouse, they have a 19th hole bar on the lower level and Izzo's restaurant on the top level. You're only a mile or so west of Detroit Lakes, but you can also rent rooms at the resort. There is also a small mini golf course and ice cream shop adjacent to the parking lot.

And by cold, I mean uncooked hash browns, room temp. sausage. The guy cooking omelets either didn't have the right pans or didn't know how to cook them, so... scrambled eggs. The buffet setup is such that you go through the line, loading your plate and then get to to the omelet and waffle station. Then you wait in the back corner of the room for 3-4 minutes or more waiting for your order. So... your food gets colder. To get syrup or rock-hard butter, you have to cut back into the line. The syrup bottle has a stopper so it's a trickle coming out... as your waffle gets cold. Other buffet items -- chicken seemed leftover and rewarmed, coffee cake was tasteless and dry, dessert bar was rock hard and stale. Self-serve beverages -- lukewarm coffee and juice in cans. To sum it up, cold and uncooked food, no service other than a staffer clearing plates. No proper food safety measures like sneeze guards or individual silverware were present. The staff was disorganized, poorly trained and provided zero service -- not even coffee or water. This was not worth the $20 we each paid, it was more terrible than the worst hotel breakfast I've ever had. We're a local group of 5 who truly wanted to support a local business, but we won't be back and can't recommend.

But instead we were turned away at the gate because the ENTIRE park was closed for a concert. The attendant was none too polite about it either. "Oh, you can just come back tomorrow"... well, we can't. And probably neither can the cars behind us from Tennessee and Kansas. This is a big new event, and we had no notice about the closure. Really bundled this one. I have no interest in ever coming to this park.

For the kids -with endless energy- there are both planned activities and ready access to all sorts of things to prevent boredom. All sorts of water toys and playmates and a variety of land games too. For the adults, it's a genuine place to unwind. Ample opportunities to share in the adventure, as a family or on your own. From planned things (closest to the pin, waterslide) to spontaneous (grab a kayak and explore the lake). Or take your favorite book and rotate between your porch, the deck, and the lawn. The cabins are simple and relaxing, and it's nice to fall asleep in the afternoon to gentle waves. Even the wifi has been upgraded in the past few years for those pesky moments when you need it. Meals are held in a dining hall with servers. The food's not amazing but usually fits the bill after a day in the sun. Timing is never strict. What this place is not: a luxury resort with catering staff. If you're expecting St Regis of the Woods, reset. The amenities are from a bygone era, the staff is exceptionally polite but aren't here to run drink orders, and the grounds are simple but not overdone. You won't find TVs or a high-class cafe, nor room service and gourmet cuisine. You will find time to actually take a break and recharge. Honestly, it's hard to think of how Fair Hills could improve. Sure, the cabins could use some updating (though I suspect a massive capital cost). And it'd be nice for places a bit nicer for adults to congregate, maybe stocked with some beer (most common spaces are kid-friendly, and so not too comfortable). But the easiest thing would probably be an upgrade to the coffee, which for a San Francisco snob always leaves me hanging.

Their range of activities kept us busy for three days, including all kinds of water sports (kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, paddle boating, sailing, fishing), bikes (for a fee), golfing, golf carts (for a fee), bonfires, pool/hottub, deck over the lake and deliciousssss breakfast. The wedding, of course, was gorgeous. The resort was perfect for the ceremony, cocktails, dinner, and dancing. The food for all of the above was consistently yummy. They basically put the entire place at the disposal of the wedding party, and it was so. much. fun. I rave, but I mean every word. One note - it is very family friendly/laid back, so give them a little while to wander in and help you if you're checking in late. When we arrived, they were practicing singing in the ballroom (oh yeah, many of the employees are from Europe, so they sing to practice their English). And, you may have to drive around for awhile to find the main lodge, as there are no signs. I can't even say how wonderful it was. Perfect weekend there.

Lots of amenities like playground, horseshoe pits, birdie golf course, a building with tons of games and activities if it's raining. There are a ton of rules, but that's what makes it so nice!
