When you look over to the left there is a parking lot with is a kiosk to pay, apparently this does not count for the street parking. Even though that is also enforced by the police. To give a ticket to someone who did pay and had the parking receipt in the window where the parking ticket was placed is just ridiculous. So the next day we decided to check it out. This place blew us away. The modern architecture is stunning with different levels, and there is even a fireplace. There is also a room dedicated just for magazines with the most current issues. If you like movies the library has an impressive selection of DVDs. Even their restrooms have fancy Dyson faucets. There is a cafe as well. One of the upper levels offers a nice outdoor patio balcony. Good to see the tax dollars going back to the community. No matter how old you are, go get yourself a library card. There is a parking garage nearby. It's a great way to spend the day reading a book or two.

It has moved several times through the years, and was even closed for a short time due to the "difficulties," otherwise known as the Revolutionary War. Today, it is housed in a small brick building on Centre Street, a few blocks up from State Street and the center of commercial Newtown Borough. It is a nonprofit, membership organization ($20. per individual), servicing the needs of bibliophiles in the community. Some of the books in the collection are older than the library, as are the famous William Penn chairs. It is another one of those well preserved and well intentioned institutions that help us understand the meaning of creating a new country and culture, and honoring that heritage daily. It is a great place to visit, or peruse the stacks. The children's' section is warm and inviting. The volunteer staff, knowledgeable and welcoming. Simply an amazing living history we can all feel, as we imagine how it was to live and learn in the eighteenth century in the formative years of our nation.

It's quiet, thoughtful, and the kind of place where you naturally slow down and look closely at things. I went back again yesterday for a very specific and slightly heartbreaking reason. I realized I grabbed the wrong collectible pencil before. Mine said "52 Weeks" instead of "First Flight," which meant my collection was incomplete and yes, I was genuinely sad about it. I stopped in just to ask if they maybe had an extra one somewhere. Renee was INCREDIBLE. Truly the nicest human. She took the time to look and actually found one for me. It absolutely made my day. I honestly wanted to write this review just to thank her because that level of kindness and care really sticks with you. Also, on my second visit I realized how much I missed the first time around. Wow. What a unique, random gem and historic property. What is Fonthill and why is there a castle in…read moreDoylestown, Pennsylvania? Fonthill Castle was the home of archeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer. (Also in Doylestown are two more Mercer buildings you can tour - the Mercer Museum and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works building, the business Mercer ran and where most of the tiles in the castle were produced.) Henry Mercer seems like he was an interesting guy, and you can see that in his home - 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 200 windows, who knows how many staircases...! And designed and decorated in a way I've never seen anywhere else. The castle is an early example of poured-in-place concrete building and is a mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles. And there are, of course, Moravia tiles (and some historic and international tiles that he collected during his life) throughout the house - almost more than you could imagine. We visited last Saturday to experience their "Fonthill Castle Holiday Lights Meander Experience," which allows you to visit the castle through a self-guided experience (there were staff in various rooms who were happy to answer questions) and enjoy a series of Christmas trees on display throughout the home. I definitely enjoyed the experience but am definitely planning a return visit to see the castle in better light (not at night in the dark - which was perfect for the Christmas tree experience) - they offer 60-minute guided tours though the house for most of the year! The castle is pretty wild, and I look forward to visiting it again and experiencing it in a new way. If you are interested in architecture, art, crafts, the Arts and Crafts design movement, or just quirky, unusual places, definitely add Fonthill to your list and check it out!
