Located just a short drive from Lexington, Harkness Edwards is checks all the boxes for a fun day out. Atmosphere, check. Views, check. Affordable, check. A variety of wines for every palette, check. We prefer our wine on the sweeter side so we went with the best sellers flight. For just $10 we received a flight of 5 different wines, These were generous pours and we presented beautifully. Once we got settled, we decided to add a charcuterie board for two. At just $20, that was a great price! It included grapes, multiple cheeses, crackers, meat and chocolates. I would've liked a bit more meat, but I understand that additional meat may have driven the price up. In addition to our flight, we also enjoyed a glass of seasonal apple cider sangria. It was light and refreshing, topped off with champagne for a bit of effervescence. Since it was such a nice day, we opted for outdoor seating to enjoy the weather and beautiful views. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. We brought personal activities to entertain ourselves, so we colored , journaled and did some reading during our time at the vineyard. Before leaving, we settled our tab and browsed in the retail area. They have many items for purchase including local honey, candles, soap, lotion and of course, wine. The scenery, atmosphere, and overall property create a relaxing environment that feels very "Kentucky wine country." The staff was also incredibly friendly, welcoming, and wonderful with families and kids. The gift shop and tasting space itself functionally was not laid out in a way that made the experience especially easy or comfortable to enjoy. For those of you interested in tastings, there is nowhere comfortable to sit during the tasting process, unless you want to trade into plastic cups and head outside. This unintentionally created a rushed feeling, even though the staff themselves never pressured us. As for the wines, I tried the Cabernet Sauvignon, Equestrian Series, and Crimson Cabernet. I personally tend to lean towards drier, more robust wines, these felt fairly lackluster overall and lacked the depth and balance I personally look for in a wine that can either stand confidently on its own or pair beautifully with food. A few of the sweeter wines others in my group sampled came across far more grape-forward than expected and reminded me more of juice than a refined wine experience. (My overall impression was they paired more with $10 bottles than the prices that were asked) While the staff was clearly well-intentioned and friendly, the overall tasting experience lacked some of the seriousness, polish, and professionalism that you would expect from a true leader in the wine space. We had to request that glasses be emptied and cleaned between tastings, water was never offered between pours, and some of the finer details that elevate a winery experience simply felt overlooked. That said, this place has a lot of potential. Between the scenery, atmosphere, and welcoming team, I could absolutely see why Talon Winery would become a favorite spot for locals or visitors looking for a casual afternoon outing. However, for those looking for a polished, elevated "Napa-style" wine experience, this may not quite be the home run I had hoped it would be.

I should clarify first that I may be the least qualified person to write a review here. I've spent all of 5 hours in Berea in my lifetime, although that short span happened to coincide with the Spoonbread festival. And you can count the number of times I've had spoonbread on one hand. But that's not going to stop me from reflecting on spoonbread as a culinary centerpiece. I don't think the Berea festival features a spoonbread bake-off or eating contest or food fight, but the festival does very rightly churn out large quantities of samples of the dish. The spoonbread I had here was very light and fluffy, almost best described as a Kentucky souffle. If it's lacking in depth of flavor, it more than suffices as a light, creamy conduit for melted butter. I've had spoonbread elsewhere at The Eagle, a regional chain, where the texture is a lot more hardy and grainy, probably from a coarser cornmeal. That was a very different dish. But what that had in common with my Berea cornbread experience is that in both cases, you can scoop it with a spoon, and in both cases, that lather of butter makes it a guilty indulgence. I don't think Berea can lay claim as the place of origin for spoonbread, but it does seem to be a lovely little town at the base of some lovely foothills. Easily worth a spoonful.

Now for the wines! I must say I liked every wine I tried. I especially enjoyed a states berry basil wine and a mango wine. They are absolutely perfect for summer and non of the wines are overly sweet which is appreciated. So much all you taste is what was added vs the wine. The owners are a husband and wife team and I couldn't love that more. They truly put their heart and soul into the wine, production, down to the selection of the grapes. The name is a nod to their time in Japan. As them about it! Can't wait to come back on a nice day for another glass. It's a little far out for me but worth the adventure!

The walking surface is crushed stone, so it is not like walking in a regular store. The majority of the spring flowers go fast right around Memorial Day and Kentucky Derby weekends. This greenhouse appears to deal primarily with Proven Winners merchandise. As such, you can be assured a robust and healthy plant specimen from good genetics. Pricing seemed a little high, especially for perennials. This may be Proven Winners MSRP and not necessarily controlled by the family business. This would be my go to for a greenhouse in the Harrodsburg area. They also have a small amusement park for school aged children, that is open during certain days and hours. I don't know much about it, but from the road, the rides look clean, newer and well maintained. We do not have children so it has not been part of our experience. Daynabrook has a number of "pop up" satellite locations to service your flower needs as well. This is a family run business and therefore, I prefer to shop at such places. Parking is ample on a stone lot, off of a quiet road. The greenhouse also borders the highway, making it an easily accessible location. Fall mums will be the next high demand product and we will indeed be back to buy them here.
