Okay, I can't say that there is anything all that fantastic about this place - it pretty much has everything that you would expect from a suburban pub, such as a gaming lounge, a rather large sports bar, and at least two restaurants (though they are probably the same restaurant, it's just that they are in two, or even three, rooms). I've only been to this place a couple of times, and that was because I was on the bus and wanted to get off to, well, check it out. It certainly is pretty popular with the locals, but that probably has something to do with it being the only pub for miles around.

They gave us a free round of drinks by way of apology for that. When the meals finally arrived both snitzels were good without being great but the steak sandwiches were poor. Served in ciabatta bread on a wooden board they were overworked, barely warm, difficult to eat and the steak resembled leather. It should be difficult to utterly stuff up a pub classic but they managed it. I've eaten there before and it was far better so 3 stars is being generous assuming today was an off day.

Mind you, it is a bit of a hike to get to since it is about 50 km from the centre of Melbourne, but fortunately there is a railway station across the road (though getting off the train simply to have a drink at this pub is probably not the best of ideas). I remember seeing this pub as a kid since my Grandparents used to live out here, but it was years before I managed to get around to actually having a beer here. It has a really nice country feel about it, and the sports bar is pretty much separated from the bistro and dining area. There is a huge garden, but you can also sit out on the veranda and watch the cars all go past. Certainly a place to check out if you are able to get up here.

However, since at the time it was the only thing that seemed to be here (other than the railway station) I wasn't going to get off the train simply to visit this pub. However, when I had my hands on a car I made an effort to visit it, and it is certainly well worth the trip. Sure, Donnybrook is suddenly becoming a new housing estate, however this pub still seems to have a lot of old country charm. It has a lovely beer garden, as well as a really nice front bar. Mind you, the country atmosphere also tends to apply to the locals, so don't expect a trendy inner-city crowd.

I sent it back as it was as tough as work boots too. When the replacement came out medium well, i just conceded to eating the chips and giving up. Their schnitzel is also a pre made freezer type situation, the kind of thing you'd expect from a dingy service station. Everything was dry and clearly not fresh. I hope ill be able to edit this in the future to say they've turned it around but right now i couldn't recommend the place to anyone. A real shame.

The a la carte dinner (a rather large veal rib eye) was much better than the breakfast (standard buffet with nowhere-near-crispy-enough bacon). At any rate it was a fair few cuts above standard conference centre food. If you happen to go there, do yourself a favor and ask them if you can stay in the homestead instead of the standard accommodation. It's a beautiful old building that has been fully restored to it's original glory with fantastic feature timber work and some rather quaint stained glass windows of delicious animals. The restaurant is in the old carriage house building, which has high ceilings, large exposed timber beams, and a lovely deck out the back where you can sit and look across the farmland while you drink your coffee in the morning. The veal was perhaps a little tougher than veal should be, but had a good strong flavour as rib eye should. I was impressed by the pannacotta for dessert, which had a subtle orange flavour in the background. The wine was fairly good too, it's recommended as a cold climate wine region so we had the Pinot Noir.

When my parent's came over to Melbourne recently and stayed at my Uncle's place, it gave me a great excuse to come up here and have a drink. Mind you my auntie was quite surprised to find out that I knew that there was a pub opposite the railway station, but as my Dad mentioned, I happen to know where all of the pubs are. This was a pretty nice pub, and the cheerful welcome I received when I stepped in through the door goes to show, once again, that country pubs are quite different to their metropolitan counterparts (I never receive a hearty welcome when I walk into the Transit Bar). There is also a beer garden, but I would probably move away from 'beer garden' to describe it more like a backyard, something else that seems to be common with pubs out here.
