We were happy that we didn't wait to eat at the busier restaurant a couple of doors down because I think this place was better (I looked at the buffet at the other place and it just wasn't my thing). I had the schnitzel grilled sandwich. It had Swiss cheese and the best mustard ever. It was very warm and crispy on the outside. It was very good but I would say the schnitzel was a little plain tasting. If it had a little more seasoning, it would be incredible. The texture was perfect. My husband had the schnitzel platter for one. He gave me his coleslaw and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It tasted homemade in a very good way. Stopped at the Ronnenberg March 4th 2026. The food was outstanding! I love German style food and to me it doesn't get better than this! Their oven baked steak is delicious as usual and it leaves you wanting more! The sides that were included were coleslaw, cottage cheese, (both the best I've ever had), bread, sliced potatoes and it comes With a side of gravy. Green beans were terrific with real bacon pieces mixed in. This place brought back all of their original recipes and they are amazing! The service was really fast and the waiter was very kind to us! If you ever want a meal where it leaves you wanting to come back again and again then this place is worth putting it on your to do destinations. I stopped for lunch on a busy Saturday. We were seated right away. The waitress was wonderful. She was very attentive. I ordered the Sauerbraten (which is one of my favorite German meals). My companion ordered the Yager Schnitzel. While the food was plentiful for the dollar, the taste was off putting. The Sauerbraten was so acidic it burned my throat when swallowed. The potatoes were undercooked and unseasoned, the coleslaw was very sweet, the green beans seemed very nicely prepared, but had ham in them and I am not a fan of ham. The Yager Schnitzel was served with a mushroom gravy that had the consistency and flavor of a jarred gravy. The Schnitzel itself was dry and unseasoned. I'm m just writing to complain how we were received today after our visit to your restaurant. This was our third visit to your restaurant. We usually stop on our way back home to Topeka, Kansas from a family reunion in Moline, Illinois. Being our third visit, my wife Lyn made a reservation from I-80 for 1:40 pm. We actually got there at 1:30 pm and checked in with the lovely/nice blonde hostess to be told that our reservation was not on her computer. My wife told her that she had emailed a Justin and she told us that she believed us and that she would put us at the head of the line. Then this is when the trouble started. The older looking guy that was to seat us started having some sort of fit mumbling that the reservation wasn't made right and something to the effect that it was made for 1:40 pm and that it was not that time yet. This made my wife feel awful to the point she went back to the hostess to show the hostess the email and that she was not lying and the hostess assured her that she believed her. The same guy seemed upset when he went to seat us and in a snotty tone said "LYN". He then proceeded to take us to our table. Our waiter came to our table, took our order, then brought us our order. He was fantastic and the food was great but now I'm in a bad mood from the way my wife was treated, to the point that I wanted to ask that guy outside to have a word with him. But I'm not sure if he has some sort of mental issue that should be addressed. When he sat a family of six, he seemed to slam the menus down on the table like he was angry about something. This man, like I said, looked older than anyone else working there, salt and pepper hair, kind of walked with a limp, and had some high heal snickers soles on. With him seeming to have a mental issue, I chose to let the matter go, but my wife and I have decided never to go to your establishment again in the future. It used to be fun to eat there then do some shopping. But from now on, we will eat elsewhere. I hope that you address this matter. read more

Amazing meal as always. We've been coming to Amana for around 20 years. No visit here is complete without a meal at one of the family-style dinner restaurants here (there are around 3 of them). We favor the Ronneburg. Tonight (Friday), they were busy but we got seated right away. Our server was Annette and she took great care of us. We started out with a couple of Iced Teas and water. As we knew what we wanted for dinner, we gave our order to Annette right away. We shared the following family style meals: - Bavarian Chicken (served with Spatzle) - Broasted Chicken (served with Spatzle) - Cold family style dishes served before dinner: whole pickled beets, coleslaw, cottage cheese with chives, bread and butter - Hot family styled dishes served with the main dinner entree: sauerkraut, green beans, fried potatoes and brown gravy The cold dishes were all excellent. The green beans were surprisingly good with onion and bacon, the fried potatoes were excellent. We ate about 1/3 of our meals, ordered a slice of coconut cream pie to go and boxed up all the leftovers (mains and sides). We'll eat on all of this for two days! We stopped here for dinner on a Monday night at 6:30 not realizing that they close at 7 pm. We were seated right away and ordered. Our waitress was patient and helpful. My husband had a tenderloin sandwich and coleslaw and I had the fish basket with coleslaw. We also added a side of the cottage cheese that we shared. Our food came quickly and everything was delicious. The restaurant did start to clear out and once we realized they were closing we paid and left which was around 7:15. It is inside an older traditional brick building and has a lot of character, actually reminding me of walking into a centuries-old restaurant in Europe. The basic colonial decor fits the character of the 19th century Colonies theme with a penchant for the color burgundy throughout the restaurant. I gave the atmosphere an average rating - clean and historic, yet also a bit aged. The service, quality and value of the food though is what stood out to me from our visit. Max W. was our server and he was very attentive, full of suggestions and made the experience quite enjoyable. My wife ordered the Ronneburg Melt with Fried Potatoes and I ordered the Schnitzel Sandwich with Pickled Beets (see picture below). Loved this cute German inspired restaurant. With a lot of old school pictures and German clothing hung on the walls. Super cozy and quaint feel the moment you walk in. It felt as if we got transported into Germany for breakfast. The people working here were very friendly. Right away the host sat us down and brought us a high chair for our son plus some crayons and coloring paper. So nice! The server her name was Tammy and she came right away to greet us and was super understanding about our gluten allergy. She brought our drinks and then we ordered but my husband was having a hard time choosing something since he does not eat pork so she offered to get him a veggie omelet which was so nice of her to do. I got #1 bacon, eggs, fried potatoes and no toast since I'm allergic to gluten. The potatoes were so delicious and crispy. The breakfast felt as if we were at home from how good and homey it tasted. Definitely recommend this place to anyone coming to visit the Amanas. We hope to be back again next time we are in town. read more

We were quickly seated on a Sunday afternoon and cheerfully greeted by our waitress (sorry, don't know her name). The dining room we sat in was to the right of the entrance and had lots of tables. Unfortunately we were seated next to some noisy eaters, but we chose to stay where we were seated. I had the Jaeger Schnitzel Sandwich on marbled rye and it was nice and tender, not overly fried and came with tomato slices, dill pickle slices and lettuce. My son had the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich with a side of coleslaw. That coleslaw was incredible! Very creamy and delicious! The mushroom gravy that came with both sandwiches was good, not great, but still good. I enjoyed our "traditional" food and would recommend you to try it out when in Amana. read more

I'm giving 5 stars, even though the server was a bit inexperienced. The restaurant is a piece of history, and on May Fest local women sang in high German and danced around the Maypole right in front of the restaurant. As befits its utilitarian communal kitchen heritage, the restaurant serves all meals for many hours. I had the sauerbraten and a local rhubarb wine (sold across the street), and both were excellent. Neither is my preferred dish nor drink, but I enjoyed both very much. I felt like I could be in the Rhineland, along the river, enjoying a vacation, instead of a short drive off the interstate in Iowa. Highly recommended. read more

I was in Coralville for work and heard about the Amana Colonies. Sadly we didn't realized almost everything closes at 5pm so we didn't get to browse a lot of shops. Luckily the restaurants stay open until 7 or 8pm. Parking was plentiful in the touristy town. Ronneburg had a very old German village feel with creaky wooden floors and small, interlocking dining rooms. Our waitress was friendly and offered recommendations. They offered local brewed beer, Millstream, mediocre and very light or German imports. For entrees, you can order either a platter or family style (about $5 more per person with 4 additional sides and unlimited refills). We decided family style and ordered boasted chicken (pressure fried chicken) and paid the $1.50 more for all white meat (2 wings and 2 breasts) and sausage platter. Sausages are made locally at the Amana Smoke house. You get 1 each of smoked sausage, smoked bratwurst and fresh bratwurst. Chicken breasts were crispy, but the meat was a bit dry. Sausage were great and flavorful and served with a coarse mustard. We liked the fried sliced potatoes, Amana style cottage cheese and green beans. The coleslaw was too heavily dressed in mayonnaise and clumpy. You won't leave Ronneburg hungry! read more

Many reviews describe this as family style, which it is if you're with a group. If you're a single or couple, or even foursome, you order individual entrees as anywhere else. Our side of coleslaw came quickly and--because we were hungry--consumed it before the bacon hamburger and breaded pork loin sandwich arrived 10 minutes later. However, both sandwiches were worth the wait. The burger was juicy and the loin had a wonderfully mild breading over the large meat portion. The breading could have used a little more seasoning. I would have liked a sauce other than mustard or catsup to add a muy more moisture to the meat. Service was helpful and unobtrusive. At 11:30am we had no wait in a Friday. I was in town for a wedding and woke up needing some breakfast. Stat. We drove down the street to see what was open and the Ronneburg Restaurant look happening. We were seated right away. And while they offer a family-style all you can eat breakfast ($16)-- I was in a hurry so I ordered a short stack with eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. The pancakes came out first and are literally have the best pancakes in town. They're super thin with crispy edges. You didn't even need syrup, seriously. They tasted just like my Aunt Mary's pancakes. I could remember my childhood summers with her in Norway, IA. Divine. The made-in-house strawberry rhubarb jam also was amazing. The service was impeccable. (I don't use that word often, but it truly was.) The pricing was on point. Parking is a non-issue. The breakfast menu was small and offered all the classics, nothing crazy. This Amana gotta-try is open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) and serves up breakfast 8-10:30am each day it is open. My husband is always craving Sauerbraten and not every German restaurant serves it. Thank goodness Ronneburg Restaurant did! You can eat family style even if there is just two of you. We decided to go with the Bavarian Chicken Platter and ordered the Sauerbraten ala carte. With the platter you are getting their awesome creamy coleslaw, green beans in mushroom sauce with ham, fried potatoes and tolls. It fit the bill for the two of us. We could not leave without some pie and it was a bonus to be the German Chocolate. I was worried I would only get one bite and my husband the rest. Because it was a rich pie and my husband loves me I got more than one bite of pie. It is a treat to dine in a house-style restaurant. We enjoy the coziness and the sound level. We decided to go with the family style breakfast and almost immediately plates and plates of delicious food started hitting the table. Oue food took forever to get to us and they weren't even busy. And to add to that, our food was cold when it got to our table. Our waitress hardly ever came around to our table to refill our drinks or even check on how we were doing.
