First time in this place that has been here forever. Small but you get that comfortable at home feeling. It was clean inside and well lit with plenty of windows. The service was so welcoming and they talked with us and joked around. They were not just there to serve but to interact and talk with us. A very nice experience. Really solid greasy spoon experience. Iowa nice servers (which is not always given for diners), decent comfort food, clean ambience, and a good mix of townie clientele. The food was quite underseasoned, but nothing that could t be fixed with table salt and pepper. They probably do this on purpose for the older folks who might be limited salt. What this charming restaurant does, they do VERY well. The staff was very friendly and personable. Our breakfasts were very well-prepared and tasty. One standout dish was their pancakes with granola, blueberries, and cinnamon. The cinnamon did not overpower, but was the perfect amount to let the blueberries shine. And they were SO filling. The coffee was good, and hot refills were frequently offered. My parents come here all the time, and I know that every time we come to visit Iowa (we live in Texas), we will make this a stop every trip. read more

I've been coming here for years. The food is consistently good and the service is fast and friendly. We always check to see if they have potato soup - we could make a meal from this alone. This spot was the perfect place to stop and have brunch. We knew when there was a wait at the door it was a good sign. The front entry was a little low on space, but the staff did a great job greeting waiting customers and supplying menus for those who wanted them. It was a great distraction during the wait. If Mikhael's doesn't remind you of wherever you grew up, I feel sorry for you. Mikhael's is what breakfast spots are like in my hometown, and how they should be everywhere. As you sit at the counter, you can't help but notice the number of customers who are greeted by name as they enter, or who stop to say bye to the chef as they leave. That sort of thing may not matter to you. I would argue that it should, though. Customers don't come to a restaurant often enough to be known by name, or fall into the habit of thanking the chef by name as they leave, unless the food is consistently great. I probably have enough motivation to get out to breakfast about twice a year. So, when I couldn't decide between the corned beef hash, and cinnamon French toast; I just ordered both. I'm glad I did, because both were excellent. I would give a slight edge to the cinnamon French toast in the competition between the two breakfasts. It wasn't just French toast with cinnamon on it. It was French toast made with bread that has cinnamon baked into it, which makes for a much better meal. It was also cooked perfectly. While the French toast was a little better than the corned beef hash, that's not a knock on the hash by any stretch. I feel like too many places overwork hash to the point where the corned beef and potatoes are unrecognizable as individual components. This hash managed to impart the right amount of the corned beef's flavor onto the potatoes, without turning the dish into the typical overdone homogenous mush that many short order cooks produce. If you happen to have the misfortune of being awake to face the world early enough to grab breakfast out, stop by Mikhael's. It definitely brightened my morning. read more

Mikhael's Restaurant is a good place to go when your in the area. The food is good, but not the best. I had a Belgium waffle, two eggs, and two strips of bacon. The bacon was the best tasting part of it all. The eggs and waffle just tasted like you would expect an average egg and waffle to taste like. The people I was with ordered omlets, and I was told the omlets didn't have enough cheese and were again like most of the other food average. The environment was nice, it had a cozy little diner feel. The place was a little dirty outside and inside, but nothing that bad. Today marked my second visit to this nice family owned restaurant. I had the country fried steak with sausage gravy, 2 eggs over easy and a pile of American fries. I sent a picture of this breakfast to my daughter who said it should really be named heart attack on a plate. Which I thought was pretty funny but it was absolutely true and it was absolutely an excellent breakfast.
