And they are so understaffed that the line took so long that I went, found the bathroom, and came back to see absolutely no movement in the line. One thing staff could control though, is putting potted plants between handicap parking spots. If someone had a van with the ramp for a wheelchair, they're screwed with those. Meander down the road to an open field full of trees, bushes, shrubs, grasses. plants and flowers. They also carry soil, gravel, mulch and other landscaping needs. Their greenhouse was full of annuals, perennials, veggies and herbs. The property was spacious and we spent a lot of thyme walking down the aisles. The black plastic walkways they laid down weren't very neat... it was muddy and we got pretty dirty; they may be able to come up with cleaner walkways with rock or gravel which would be aesthetically pleasing too. The selection, however, was extensive. Andy, one of the owners, took time to walk around with us and gave us info on the plants we looked at and also shared planting tips. Very helpful and sage information. He knows his stuff! We ended up purchasing a pussy willow, lavender plants, a dwarf butterfly bush, Lantana, cat mint, phlox, varieties of potato vine, impatiens, chives, and rosemary. Quite a haul! Check out was easy, Shelly, Andy's wife, was friendly and sweet. We had a nice chat and enjoyed getting to know the owners. Andy gave a more pointers and a bag of hay for our plants. Kaled us with kindness! I'd like to see them expand with potting mix, soil, etc. and maybe some gardening tools and accessories. Here, some of the prices were a smidge higher than let's say, those big box hardware/garden stores, but the plants looks healthier. We had a blast planting when we got home and our garden looked gorgeous with the additions from the nursery. We would definitely visit again, we like supporting smaller, family owned, local business rather than those great big greenhouses that overwhelm you! Finding this place was mint to be!

Came there specifically to have a key duplicated. No one at the desk. No problem, I'll wait. Employee walks by and sees me standing there and was going to keep walking so I decided to ask her if she can help me. Immediately, not a great attitude. Did not catch her name but pretty sure her name tag had "manager" on it. She had that way of talking that just signals they are irritated to be helping you. So she doesn't have the needed blank (which I understand) and decides to try to make a "custom" key for me, which I appreciate. She hands it to me and says she thinks it will work but it's custom made. Ok, I get it. This is where my annoyance increases. I said I'd like a total of three duplicate keys. She refused to make the other two. She said there's no point in making them if I'm not sure if they are going to work. Sure there is....I live an hour away, I tell her, so I'd like to get the keys now. Nope, she refused again. So if the keys work, I'm all set. If they don't work, I'm out $6 to $8. Under her way, if the keys work, I am supposed to make another 1 hour round trip to have 2 more made? Why not just make them? She apologized for how far I lived away and said....there's no point in making them if I'm not sure they are going to work. I'm a bit stunned at this outright refusal to sell the customer what they are asking for. I guess the customer is not always right at this store. It was clear she just didn't want to spend 5 more minutes making two more keys. It was quite annoying. I do not plan to return to this store.

This place is fine if you don't have to do anything but buy something and ring yourself out or need…read moresomething minor from someone, but if you need anything significant that takes any sort of effort, you might as well just leave and go somewhere else. My gut reaction is that their store leadership is terrible, but the rest of the Home Depots in the Richmond area are just as bad (and some are worse). I've come in here looking for one of the last remaining items in the store several times only to walk out empty-handed because they can't find their own products. Once they get below 5 of anything remaining in the store, they won't have a clue where to find any of them, so you might as well just go to Lowe's or to Ace Hardware. When this happened again recently, I went to Ace Hardware and found what I was looking for with no issues (ironically only two of what I was looking for in that store, and it wasn't a problem at all). And let me tell you, expecting them to deliver large orders is about as hopeless as it gets because they will mess it up, lose it, or damage whatever it is. I've had no less than four deliveries over the past 5 years that have arrived late, not arrived and had to reorder, and/or has arrived damaged. It's clear that their delivery guys just don't care enough to do their job properly. I would say they don't get paid enough to care, but for the results they are providing, they're getting paid way too too much. One moderately large order last year was delivered to a random home 10 miles away for some reason, and that homeowner was angry because they just dropped it and blocked off the driveway (that's what I call two birds with one stone). When I finally got my order, half of the lumber was damaged, and I received NONE of my 10-sheet plywood purchase. They pinned it on the Intown store (probably likely, but it was still purchased through this store), and they transferred me to them. They found my plywood, but it was only half of the order and couldn't find the rest. One of the sheets I did get was damaged, so here we go again. At some point while trying to clear up the issue, the store rep told that the issue was my mistake because I didn't actually order all of the items correctly (despite doing it in the store, and despite me looking at a printed copy of my invoice with the correct items... that apparently she couldn't find). She told me I had to place another order that wouldn't arrive for another two weeks. I placed the order and reminded her that I wasn't happy to AGAIN have to deal with another of their mistakes. In doing so I said "It's complete bulls - - t that y'all can't get your stuff together and I always have to jump through hoops to make it right." She cancelled my order and said she didn't have to fill my order because I used vulgarities, and she hung up on me. I've had whole-order deliveries cancelled without notifying me too. They'll just cancel an order, make no effort to call, and then they say they called and left a voicemail (despite that being 100% "fabricated truth"). I ordered a dog kennel a few years back, and it never made it to me. Over a month after ordering the item, I had to disprove blatant lies the store told an online rep, and once he realized I was telling the truth, he gave me a full refund. A month after that, a 300 lb box 6ft by 3ft was blocking my driveway. Inside the mangled box was the destroyed dog kennel that "never existed." Today they delivered a make-up order of one of their mysteriously-cancelled deliveries (the small items were all delivered last week, but the large items, the six 10-ft-long items I paid $80 to have delivered, they were cancelled, and I had to place another order for those), and the guy today never made any attempt to come down my driveway to deliver the items (10-ft metal drip edge/flashing). He simply propped the item up on my address sign beside the road and left. I have a 500 ft driveway that is plenty wide enough for large trucks (we have them here all the time), and we have a very large turn-around area for trucks by our house, but sometimes the driver will walk down the driveway to check it out. Not this guy today! It was drizzling, so I watched him pull the flashing out of the truck (and bend it all to hell because he didn't know how to lift it), and just leave it beside the road. This store is terrible, and the Intown store is terrible. Maybe the rest in this area are fine, but if you need them to anything more than just exist, go somewhere else.

The brush section is 10 ft away from the shaker. I watched him move the cans across the counter and he said they were ready. I said it's only been 2 min and he couldn't have shaken them. He said it only take 30 seconds to shake. Lie. I watched him but figured I'd just get a managers opinion. He followed me to customer service and stared at me in an intimidation move. So I left. Figured I'd just leave a review. This associate was 50-60 with long grey hair and a baseball cap. Avoid.

It's a good thing we decided to get there when they open because when we left around 1130, the line was very, very long! We got in line for donuts. They were pretty ready. I was put off by a female employee who was smoking while working. She lit it up after walking out of a door nearby. She had the cigarette in the palm of her hand holding it with her pointer finger and thumb. That was not cool in my book. We waited in line for a wagon to take us to the pumpkin field. We waited not too long for that. While waiting so walked into the nursery area to look at all the flowers... mostly mums. Pricing was fairly reasonable. We finally got on the wagon. It was actually a pretty good ride to the field. We were dropped off and have free reign of the field. We could stay as long as we would like. Then we take a wagon back when we were ready. There was some confusion or lack of communication on how picking and paying for pumpkins went. We thought we would pay by weight and not the whole, "pay a set rate for as many as you can hold while taking 3 steps." A staff member was very kind to us when we returned. We were about to go back out and get more pumpkins to make it worth our trip. There was also confusion on entering the kids play area. We had tickets online, but did not realize we needed to go I see the gift shop to get the wrist bands. The ground in that area where the inflatables were, was really hard in the feet if you took your shoes off in order to play on/in the inflatables. We ended up telling our kids to keep their shoes in to avoid an injury's. For us, this was a one and done.

But, they failed in their execution and customer service. 1) They planted a tree I didn't ask for. They said they had to do it because it was an HOA requirement. Fine. But, I should have been given the opportunity to choose the species and location. Nope. James River picked the tree (with a color we don't want) and planted it in the way of where our bulldozer needs to go. 2) Half a dozen shrubs and 1 tree they planted are dead within 2 months of their planting. Doug said he'd send someone over in a couple days to take inventory and fix it. Weeks later, no one ever came so I had to follow up and remind them again. 3) I bought sod to cover 3/4 of an acre. Some of the sod didn't take. Some of the sod came with weeds. I thought the point of sod was to not have any weeds at all on day 1? I found their execution, customer service, and product to be lacking. UPDATE: weeks after I posted this review, James River came and replaced the dead shrubs and dead tree. They didn't call me to tell me they were coming. Instead, they just came. So... once again, they missed an opportunity to ASK ME what kind of flowering tree we would like and where we would like it to be planted. Instead, they planted some tree (I have no idea what it is) and located it directly right where a bulldozer needs to go in order to reach our backyard. It's just so unnecessarily wasteful. This is really a 1-star review. I'm leaving 2 stars in case our poor experiences with James River were a fluke. UPDATE 10/9: Months later (but less than a year after initial landcscaping), another shrub died. I notified Doug and he said he'd take care of it but he never did. It's been a month since he said he'd take care of it and now he won't even answer polite reminders that we're waiting on James River Nurseries to fulfill their warranty. They blew yet another chance to redeem themselves.

When we first met with Doug it was apparent he knew what he was talking about and also took the time to listen to what we wanted. If he thought we should choose a certain plant he had evidence as to why. We shared with him our drainage problem and he assured us it would be fixed. Months after the initial visit, we were finally ready to have JR install our new shrubs and trees. They were very accommodating as we continued to switch the schedule. They finished the work and made sure that that everything was as we wanted it. The decisions they made with grasses and small shrubs they made were a perfect accent to the large trees. I would highly recommend giving James River an opportunity for your home. As they were at our home, we discussed some of their commercial work too. As I was driving around I took note of those location since several were near my house. It was clear they not only do a great job with a small project like my home, but also a larger commercial project as well. Thanks Doug and the entire James River team!
